Book excerpt: How did diverse women in America understand, explain, and act upon their varied constraints, positions, responsibilities, and worldviews in changing American society between the end of the Revolution and the beginning of the Civil War? Antebellum Women: Private, Public, Partisan answers the question by going beyond previous works in the field. The authors identify three phases in the changing relationship of women to civic and political activities. They first situate women as "deferential domestics" in a world of conservative gender expectations; then map out the development of an ideology that allowed women to leverage their familial responsibilities into participation as "companionate co-workers" in movements of religion, reform, and social welfare; and finally trace the path of those who followed their causes into the world of politics as "passionate partisans." The book includes a selection of primary documents that encompasses both well-known works and previously unpublished texts from a variety of genre

Book excerpt: On Behalf of the Insane Poor was originally published in 1973. These are selected historical reports on behalf of the insane poor. In Dorothea Lynde Dix?s 1843 plea to the Massachusetts Legislature she said, ---I tell what I have seen ---painful and shocking as the details often are --- that from them you may feel more deeply the imperative obligation which lies upon you to prevent the possibility of a repetition or continuance of such outrages upon humanity. I proceed, Gentlemen, briefly to call your attention to the present state "in behalf of the insane poor confined within the Commonwealth in cages, closets, cellars, stalls, pens; chained, naked, beaten with rods and lashed into obedience." Dorothea Dix was a tireless and effective mental health reformer at a time when the mentally ill were treated as delinquents. She was born in Maine (1802), after the age of 12 she lived with her grandmother and began teaching school at the age of 14. She published many books for children, which were outstanding .In 1841, hearing that a Sunday-school teacher was needed in the East Cambridge House of Correction, she volunteered to teach a class of twenty women who were criminals and drunkards beginning her crusade for mental health reform. When the Civil War started, she volunteered her services and was subsequently appointed superintendent of the army nurses. What Florence Nightingale was to the Crimean War, the same was Dorothea Dix to the Union Army during the Civil War.Miss Dix returned to the Trenton State Hospital, which she considered her home for the last six years of her life. She died there July 18, 1887 at age of 85 and is buried in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial to the Legislature of Massachusetts, 1843 I come to present the strong claims of suffering humanity. I come to place before the Legislature of Massachusetts the condition of the miserable, the desolate, the outcast. I come as the advocate of helpless, forgotten, insane, and idiotic men and women; of beings sunk to a condition from which the most unconcerned would start with real horror; of beings wretched in our prisons, and more wretched in our almshouses. And I cannot suppose it needful to employ earnest persuasion, or stub born argument, in order to arrest and fix attention upon a sub jcet only the more strongly pressing in its claims because it is revolting and disgusting in its details. I must confine myself to few examples, but am ready to fur nish other and more complete details, if required. If my pict ures are displeasing, coarse, and severe, my subjects, it must be recollected, offer no tranquil, refined, or composing features. The condition of human beings, reduced to the extremest states of degradation and misery, cannot be exhibited in softened lan guage, or adorn a polished page. I proceed, gentlemen, brie y to call your attention to the pres ent state of insane persons confined within this Commonwealth, in cages, closets, cellars, stalls, pens! Chained, naked, beaten with rods, and lashed into obedience. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pity, disgust, fear, cure, and prevention--all are words that Americans have used to make sense of what today we call intellectual disability. Inventing the Feeble Mind explores the history of this disability from its several identifications over the past 200 years: idiocy, imbecility, feeblemindedness, mental defect, mental deficiency, mental retardation, and most recently intellectual disability. Using institutional records, private correspondence, personal memories, and rare photographs, James Trent argues that the economic vulnerability of intellectually disabled people (and often their families), more than the claims made for their intellectual and social limitations, has shaped meaning, services, and policies in United States history.
