Book excerpt: This book is entitled Memorial Stones because it is about remembering what God has done to and provided for my family as we followed His plan for our lives. In the Bible, I saw a chapter where the Israelites were finally able to live in the land promised to their forefathers many years before. As they crossed the river, each tribe was supposed to pick up a rock. Then when they arrived on the land on the other side, they built a memorial place to remember all that God has done in their lives. I wanted this imagery to have impact on this book. It really is filled with memories of my family life over the years. When I was growing up, my mom would invite people, missionaries and preachers, to come to our house, and they would share all their experiences with us in story form. As we live, we see the places where God's answer comes through for us, and I began to repeat these stories. They were awesome to me to see them. They became "stones" of memory for me to repeat. They showed me the places where God was taking care of us in the different events in our lives. The stories I chose were the ones that stayed the longest. There are always things we remember when the whole family comes together. "Do you remember when...?" These are events inside the family. My parents are not with us here anymore, but I wanted to share my stories to those who might be encouraged by the events we have been through in our own lives. My grandchildren love stories, so they can read this book and see all the stories in their grandparents' lives. My faith is life within me. I do what I see is the right thing to do. I followed the Lord in good and bad experiences. I knew He is there. Sometimes, I couldn't see him, but I trusted him because I knew that he said he would never leave me or abandon me.

Book excerpt: Building and Sustaining a Thriving Leadership Culture Essential to every healthy church is a biblical model of leadership. In the New Testament, church leadership is built around a team of elders working together, each bringing his own unique skills and gifts to the cause of shepherding the flock God entrusted to them. However, in many churches today the principle of plurality in leadership is often misunderstood, mistakenly applied, or completely ignored. Dave Harvey encourages church leaders to prioritize plurality for the surprising ways that it helps churches to flourish. This book not only builds a compelling case for churches to adopt and maintain biblical elder pluralities guided by solid leadership but also supplies practical tools to help elders work together for transformation. Book excerpt: The Martin Luther King Memorial on the National Mall of Washington, DC, is dedicated to the first person of color, first person for peace, and first person with no public or government position, etc. The values this person represents—democracy, justice, equal rights, hope, and love—are ever more relevant to the advance of human civilization of our own society and those of the whole world. The unique memorial style also sets it apart from all the other memorials on the National Mall of Washington, DC. Its central piece, the Stone of Hope, is the first granite statue, the tallest, and installed outdoor. It was designed, carved, and installed by a Chinese master sculptor, Lei Yixin. You may want to know who first initiated this project. Who managed the operation of the memorial development project? Whose design was finally selected? Who is Lei Yixin? How and why he was chosen to be the sculptor of record? How did he design and build the massive Stone of Hope and the Mountains of Despair out of granite? Where did he create those art pieces? And from where did they ship the stone to Washington DC? How did he install this central piece of the memorial? This book will give you all above and more answers you would like to know.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the recent history of violence and destruction, Bosnia-Herzegovina holds a positive place in history, marked by a continuous interweaving of different religious cultures. The most expansive period in that regard is the Ottoman rule that lasted here nearly five centuries. As many Bosnians accepted Islam, the process of Islamization took on different directions and meanings, only some of which are recorded in the official documents. This book underscores the importance of material culture, specifically gravestones, funerary inscriptions and images, in tracing and understanding more subtle changes in Bosnia’s religious landscape and the complex cultural shifts and exchange between Christianity and Islam in this area. Gravestones are seen as cultural spaces that inscribe memory, history, and heritage in addition to being texts that display, in image and word, first-hand information about the deceased. In tackling these topics and ideas, the study is situated within several contextual, theoretical, and methodological frameworks. Raising questions about religious identity, history, and memory, the study unpacks the cultural and historical value of gravestones and other funerary markers and bolsters their importance in understanding the region’s complexity and improving its visibility in global discussions around multiculturalism and religious pluralism. Drawing upon several disciplinary methods, the book has much to offer anyone looking for a better understanding of the intersection of Christianity and Islam, as well as those with an interest in death studies.
