Book Synopsis The Criminals of Lima and Their Worlds by : Carlos Aguirre
Download or read book The Criminals of Lima and Their Worlds written by Carlos Aguirre and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-27 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Criminals of Lima and Their Worlds is the first major historical study of the creation and development of the prison system in Peru. Carlos Aguirre examines the evolution of prisons for male criminals in Lima from the conception—in the early 1850s—of the initial plans to build penitentiaries through the early-twentieth-century prison reforms undertaken as part of President Augusto Leguia’s attempts to modernize and expand the Peruvian state. Aguirre reconstructs the social, cultural, and doctrinal influences that determined how lawbreakers were treated, how programs of prison reform fared, and how inmates experienced incarceration. He argues that the Peruvian prisons were primarily used not to combat crime or to rehabilitate allegedly deviant individuals, but rather to help reproduce and maintain an essentially unjust social order. In this sense, he finds that the prison system embodied the contradictory and exclusionary nature of modernization in Peru. Drawing on a large collection of prison and administrative records archived at Peru’s Ministry of Justice, Aguirre offers a detailed account of the daily lives of men incarcerated in Lima’s jails. In showing the extent to which the prisoners actively sought to influence prison life, he reveals the dynamic between prisoners and guards as a process of negotiation, accommodation, and resistance. He describes how police and the Peruvian state defined criminality and how their efforts to base a prison system on the latest scientific theories—imported from Europe and the United States—foundered on the shoals of financial constraints, administrative incompetence, corruption, and widespread public indifference. Locating his findings within the political and social mores of Lima society, Aguirre reflects on the connections between punishment, modernization, and authoritarian traditions in Peru.

Book Synopsis National Literacies in Education by : Stephanie Fox
Download or read book National Literacies in Education written by Stephanie Fox and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-24 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume provides an international overview of research on nationalism in education. In light of emerging neo-nationalism and national answers to global challenges, the book contributes to a growing and desperately needed discussion on how we can understand and deal with the involvement of education in phenomena of nations and nationalisms in school, curriculum, theory and research. In this book, internationally renowned scholars as well as doctoral students and postdocs from Asia, Europe, America, and Australia show how the history of education can theoretically and empirically deal with the concept(ion)s of nation and nationalism.
Book Synopsis Imperial Educación by : Thomas Genova
Download or read book Imperial Educación written by Thomas Genova and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2021-07-08 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the long nineteenth century, Argentine and Cuban reformers invited white women from the United States to train teachers as replacements for their countries’ supposedly unfit mothers. Imperial Educación examines representations of mixed-race Afro-descended mothers in literary and educational texts from the Americas during an era in which governing elites were invested in reproducing European cultural values in their countries’ citizens. Thomas Genova analyzes the racialized figure of the republican mother in nineteenth-century literary texts in North and South America and the Caribbean, highlighting the ways in which these works question the capacity of Afro-descended women to raise good republican citizens for the newly formed New World nation-states. Considering the work of canonical and noncanonical authors alike, Genova asks how the allegory of the national family—omnipresent in the nationalist discourses of the Americas—reconciles itself to the race hierarchies upon which New World slave and postslavery societies are built. This innovative study is the first book to consider the hemispheric relations between race, republican motherhood, and public education by triangulating the nation-building processes of Cuba and Argentina through U.S. empire.
