Book Synopsis The Threat of Force in International Law by : Nikolas Stürchler
Download or read book The Threat of Force in International Law written by Nikolas Stürchler and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-07-19 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Threats of force are a common feature of international politics, advocated by some as an economical guarantee against the outbreak of war and condemned by others as a recipe for war. Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter forbids states to use threats of force, yet the meaning of the prohibition is unclear. This book provides the first comprehensive appraisal of the no-threat principle: its origin, underlying rationale, theoretical implications, relevant jurisprudence, and how it has withstood the test of time from 1945 to the present. Based on a systematic evaluation of state and United Nations practices, the book identifies what constitutes a threat of force and when its use is justified under the United Nations Charter. In so doing, it relates the no-threat principle to important concepts of the twentieth century, such as deterrence, escalation, crisis management, and what has been aptly described as the 'diplomacy of violence'.
Book Synopsis The Tombstone in Israel’s Military Cemetery since 1948 by : Yossi Katz
Download or read book The Tombstone in Israel’s Military Cemetery since 1948 written by Yossi Katz and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-06-18 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military cemeteries are one of the most prominent cultural landscapes of Israel. Their story reflects largely the main social processes that Israeli society has been undergoing since the War of Independence (1948) until today. Until the end of the 1970s, the military tombstones and their surroundings were uniform and equal, according to rules set by the State. However, since the 1980s families of the fallen soldiers started to add on the tombstone personal expressions, as well as personal objects, photographs, military artifacts etc. Thus the military tombstone and the Israeli military cemetery became one of the expressions of the dramatic transformation, from a society which emphasized the importance of the collective, to a society which intensifies the significance of the individual. The book is based on many archival documents, as well as interviews and photographs, all of which shed light on one of the most sensitive issues in Israeli society and express its importance as a central component of Israeli identity.

Book Synopsis Israel and the Bomb by : Avner Cohen
Download or read book Israel and the Bomb written by Avner Cohen and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1998-09-30 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until now, there has been no detailed account of Israel's nuclear history. Previous treatments of the subject relied heavily on rumors, leaks, and journalistic speculations. But with Israel and the Bomb, Avner Cohen has forged an interpretive political history that draws on thousands of American and Israeli government documents—most of them recently declassified and never before cited—and more than one hundred interviews with key individuals who played important roles in this story. Cohen reveals that Israel crossed the nuclear weapons threshold on the eve of the 1967 Six-Day War, yet it remains ambiguous about its nuclear capability to this day. What made this posture of "opacity" possible, and how did it evolve? Cohen focuses on a two-decade period from about 1950 until 1970, during which David Ben-Gurion's vision of making Israel a nuclear-weapon state was realized. He weaves together the story of the formative years of Israel's nuclear program, from the founding of the Israeli Atomic Energy Commission in 1952, to the alliance with France that gave Israel the sophisticated technology it needed, to the failure of American intelligence to identify the Dimona Project for what it was, to the negotiations between President Nixon and Prime Minister Meir that led to the current policy of secrecy. Cohen also analyzes the complex reasons Israel concealed its nuclear program—from concerns over Arab reaction and the negative effect of the debate at home to consideration of America's commitment to nonproliferation. Israel and the Bomb highlights the key questions and the many potent issues surrounding Israel's nuclear history. This book will be a critical resource for students of nuclear proliferation, Middle East politics, Israeli history, and American-Israeli relations, as well as a revelation for general readers.

Book Synopsis Relations between the European Union and Egypt after 2011 by : Anna Potyrala,
Download or read book Relations between the European Union and Egypt after 2011 written by Anna Potyrala, and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2015-08-14 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This publication is unique not only on a national but also international scale. It concerns the subject of the European Union's relations with Egypt after 2011 (including the earlier period), which is a highly topical issue and a very difficult one to analyse and explain. It is the outcome of a research grant titled 'The European Union towards the Transformation Processes in Egypt after 2011.' The authors largely belong to a small group of experts on North Africa and the Middle East, including Egypt. They are familiar with the literature on the subject from around the world and EU legislation. A significant strength of this project concerns the fieldwork carried out on site, in Egypt (literature, documents, interviews and observation), as well as direct contacts with European Union officials."
