Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs, Speeches and Writings of Robert Rantoul, Jr. The design of this work being to present a just and true account of the personal character and public services of Robert Rantoul, Jr., I have given, in illustration of his principles and the objects at which he aimed, his own Speeches and Writings, and the circumstances which called them forth, as well as whatever information could be gathered from those who knew him most intimately from his birth to his death. I have, besides, enjoyed the benefit of a personal acquaintance with him from the commencement to the close of his public life; and if I have not succeeded in forming a just estimate of his character, I may have been misledoby the sentiments of respect and affection with which its noble traits and excellences never failed to inspire me. For I will not deny, that if a sincere admiration of Mr. Rantoul's private and public character be a disqualification for editing this work, its success must be particularly affected and hurt by it. To speak of him as he was, is to praise him. Let the reader, therefore, pardon me if he find sober narrative sometimes uttering the warm language of eulogy. It could not otherwise have been true. The biographical sketch of Mr. Rantoul in his earliest years, and up to the time of his graduation at Harvard College, is from the accomplished pen of his kinsman and friend, Rev. A. P. Peabody, D. D., of Portsmouth. This, with the extracts from the letters of Doctors Ray and Torrey, and the three short poems, which are thrown in, not so much to show his poetical talent, as the delicacy of his sentiments, and the tenderness of his personal character, constitutes the first Chapter. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 1017 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Library of America presents the biggest, most comprehensive trade edition of Frederick Douglass's writings ever published Edited by Pulitzer Prize–winning biographer David W. Blight, this Library of America edition is the largest single-volume selection of Frederick Douglass’s writings ever published, presenting the full texts of thirty-four speeches and sixty-seven pieces of journalism. (A companion Library of America volume, Frederick Douglass: Autobiographies, gathers his three memoirs.) With startling immediacy, these writings chart the evolution of Douglass’s thinking about slavery and the U.S. Constitution; his eventual break with William Lloyd Garrison and many other abolitionists on the crucial issue of disunion; the course of his complicated relationship with Abraham Lincoln; and his deep engagement with the cause of women’s suffrage. Here are such powerful works as “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?,” Douglass’s incandescent jeremiad skewering the hypocrisy of the slaveholding republic; “The Claims of the Negro Ethnologically Considered,” a full-throated refutation of nineteenthcentury racial pseudoscience; “Is it Right and Wise to Kill a Kidnapper?,” an urgent call for forceful opposition to the Fugitive Slave Act; “How to End the War,” in which Douglass advocates, just days after the fall of Fort Sumter, for the raising of Black troops and the military destruction of slavery; “There Was a Right Side in the Late War,” Douglass’s no-holds-barred attack on the “Lost Cause” mythology of the Confederacy; and “Lessons of the Hour,” an impassioned denunciation of lynching and disenfranchisement in the emerging Jim Crow South. As a special feature the volume also presents Douglass’s only foray into fiction, the 1853 novella “The Heroic Slave,” about Madison Washington, leader of the real-life insurrection on board the domestic slave-trading ship Creole in 1841 that resulted in the liberation of more than a hundred enslaved people. Editorial features include detailed notes identifying Douglass’s many scriptural and cultural references, a newly revised chronology of his life and career, and an index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Gen. Thomas Francis Meagher: Comprising the Leading Events of His Career Chronologically Arranged, With Selections From His Speeches, Lectures and Miscellaneous Writings, Including Personal Reminiscences In undertaking to write a memoir of Thomas Francis Meagher, I have been actuated, in the first place, by a desire to pay a tribute of affectionate respect to the memory of an illustrious fellow-countryman, a patriot of whom I had been an enthusiastic admirer since boyhood - and with whose confidence I was honored from the moment of our first personal acquaintance, in 1848, to the day on which he left New York for Montana - in the summer of 1865. In the next place, I wished to enable the present generation of young men of Irish birth or blood, to estimate this gifted scion of their race as their fathers - his contemporaries - did, by placing before them a record comprising the leading events of his career, compiled from various authentic sources of information - and in which will be found selections from his speeches, lectures, and miscellaneous writings, together with such personal reminiscences as may serve to add somewhat to the interest of the book - through what little side-light they throw upon his history, and the glimpses they reveal of his genuine Irish nature. I was, furthermore, influenced to enter upon this labor of love by the reflection that, while treating of the national movement in Ireland, in 1848, - in which undertaking it was my purport to make Thomas Francis Meagher the central figure - I could, by recording my personal recollections of some of Mr. Meagher's most distinguished compatriots, and of current events - as they transpired under my observation, both in Dublin and the South of Ireland contribute some interesting facts to the, hitherto, unwritten history of that memorable year. Whether I have executed my self-imposed task in a satisfactory manner or otherwise, my readers must decide. I presume most of them will base their judgment less upon the literary merit of the work than upon their individual predilections regarding its subject. Should my surmise prove correct, I'll feel content; for, though, in the course of my narrative, I have conscientiously striven to be truthful, I had no thought of being coldly impartial - where country or friend was the subject of my theme.
