The duality theorem states that any small Boolean pretopos is canonically equivalent to its double dual. We use a strong version of the duality theorem to prove the so-called descent theorem for Boolean pretoposes which says that category of descent data derived from a conservative pretopos morphism between Boolean pretoposes is canonically equivalent to the domain-pretopos. The descent theorem contains the Beth definability theorem for classical first order logic. Moreover, it gives, via the standard translation from the language of categories to symbolic logic, a new definability theorem for classical first order logic concerning set-valued functors on models, expressible in purely syntactical (arithmetical) terms.

This paper exploits these two relations to compute dimensions of representation varieties, especially for nilpotent groups and their generalizations. They can be also defined as fundamental groups of the Squier complexes associated with monoid presentations. The authors show that the class of diagram groups contains some well-known groups, such as the R. Thompson group F. This class is closed under free products, finite direct products, and some other group-theoretical operations. The authors develop combinatorics on diagrams similar to the combinatorics on words. This helps in finding some structure and algorithmic properties of diagram groups. Some of these properties are new even for R. Thompson's group F. In particular, the authors describe the centralizers of elements in F, prove that it has solvable conjugacy problems, etc.

Given the hyperplanes of an arrangement, how can the faces of the induced partition be counted? Heretofore this question has been answered for the plane, Euclidean 3-space, hyperplanes in general position, and the d-faces of the hyperplanes through the origin in Euclidean space. In each case the numbers of k-faces depend only on the incidences between intersections of the hyperplane, even though arrangements with the same intersection incidence pattern are not in general combinatorially isomorphic. We generalize this fact by demonstrating formulas for the numbers of k-faces of all Euclidean and projective arrangements, and the numbers of bounded k-faces of the former, as functions of the (semi)lattice of intersections of the hyperplanes, not dependent on the arrangement's combinatorial type.
