Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of My Dead Life In the sunset of our lives we are dedicating books to each other, and I am fortunate enough to obtain from you a gathering of those delightful literary essays which, for the past two years, have kept me looking forward to the coming of Sunday, making Sunday for me a day of solace and indulgence, when after breakfast I fling myself into my armchair and open the Sunday Times. In Obtaining your acceptance of this book I am not less fortunate than I was in your dedication to me of Books on the Table, and I hope that our love of France and of Paris, and the stories of our many French friends which enliven these pages, will make plain to you that no other book that I have written comes to you so naturally, so amiably solicits the protection of your name, as this one. They serve for identification and for giving a correct idea of the age of each man as compared with those with whom he was associated. The dates are mostly taken from the Dictionary, so the reader will nearly always find in that work a biography of the person in question. Book excerpt: "[...]for him to imagine me built of the same stuff as himself?" On looking into his letter again I imagined my correspondent as a young man in doubt as to which road he shall take, the free road of his instincts up the mountainside with nothing but the sky line in front of him or the puddled track along which the shepherd drives the meek sheep; and I went to my writing table asking myself if my correspondent's spiritual welfare was my real object, for I might be writing to him in order to exercise myself in a private debate before committing the article to paper, or if I was writing for his views to make use of them. One asks oneself these questions but receives no answer. He would supply me with a point of view opposed to my own, this would be an advantage; so feeling rather like a spy within the enemy's lines on the eve of the battle I began my letter. "My Dear Sir: Let me assure you that we are 'built of the same stuff.' Were it not so you would have put my book aside. I even suspect we are of the same kin; were it otherwise you would not have written to me and put your difficulties so plainly before me." Laying the pen aside I meditated quite a long while if I should tell him that I imagined him as a[...]".

Book excerpt: "Bracing and beautiful . . . Every human should read it." —The New York Times A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice and 2017 Critics' Pick One of Barack Obama's Favorite Books of 2017 At the age of sixty, Cory Taylor is dying of melanoma-related brain cancer. Her illness is no longer treatable: she now weighs less than her neighbor’s retriever. As her body weakens, she describes the experience—the vulnerability and strength, the courage and humility, the anger and acceptance—of knowing she will soon die. Written in the space of a few weeks, in a tremendous creative surge, this powerful and beautiful memoir is a clear-eyed account of what dying teaches: Taylor describes the tangle of her feelings, remembers the lives and deaths of her parents, and examines why she would like to be able to choose the circumstances of her death. Taylor’s last words offer a vocabulary for readers to speak about the most difficult thing any of us will face. And while Dying: A Memoir is a deeply affecting meditation on death, it is also a funny and wise tribute to life.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life, Writings, and Character, Literary, Professional, and Religious, of the Late John Mason Good, M.D: F. R. S. F. R. S. L. Mem; Am; Phil; Soc; And F. L. S. Of Philadelphia, Etc; Etc; Etc IN undertaking the Work which is now laid before the public, I yielded with reluctance to the solicitation of esteemed friends, whose judgment I preferred to my own. From the commence ment to the close I have had to struggle with the apprehension, that in assuming the labours of a biographer, I have aimed to accomplish that for which I am unduly qualified; and the pre vailing state of ill health under which the whole has been carried forward, has at once augmented this feeling, and tended, I fear, to prove its correctness. On looking over the sheets as the printing has approached its termination, I have noticed many things which 1 could wish altered, and a few which I believe had been better omitted: but all must now remain. Yet, if I hence approach the public with weaker anticipations of success, than I have on some former occasions indulged, I am not entirely without hope that the Memoirs of my deceased Friend, which are thus presented, will, notwithstanding their many imperfections, by the delineation of a character of far from ordinary occurrence, and of more than ordinary value, serve to stimulate the activity of some, and to confirm the best principles of others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Memories These memories were written for The Christian Register, and ran through twenty-nine numbers, from December, 1903 to April, 1904. Many friends had suggested in the later years that I should write some memoirs of my life and print them, or leave them in the care of my children to be printed after my death. I did not favor the idea. But when I came to the eightieth mile-stone of my pilgrimage, there was such an outpouring of greetings and congratulations from the Church of the Messiah, the sister churches and ministers, and from friends far and wide in my motherland and my homeland these fifty-eight years, that my heart was moved to do something in this sort, and it was done, not as memoirs - these I could not attempt - but as "some memories." Book excerpt: In this almost documentary account of his own experiences of penal servitude in Serbia, Dostoevsky describes the physical and mental suffering of the convicts, the squalor and the degradation, in relentless detail. The inticate procedure whereby the men strip for the bath without removing their ten-pound leg-fetters is an extraordinary tour de force, compared by Turgenev to passages from Dante's Inferno. Terror and resignation - the rampages of a pyschopath, the brief serence interlude of Christmas Day - are evoked by Dostoevsky, writing several years after his release, with a strikingly uncharacteristic detachment. For this reason, House of the Dead is certainly the least Dostoevskian of his works, yet, paradoxically, it ranks among his great masterpieces.

The greatest story you could write is one you've experienced yourself. Knowing where to start is the hardest part, but it just got a little easier with this essential guidebook for anyone wanting to write a memoir. Did you know that the #1 thing that baby boomers want to do in retirement is write a book—about themselves? It's not that every person has lived such a unique or dramatic life, but we inherently understand that writing a memoir—whether it's a book, blog, or just a letter to a child—is the single greatest path to self-examination. Through the use of disarmingly frank, but wildly fun tactics that offer you simple and effective guidelines that work, you can stop treading water in writing exercises or hiding behind writer's block. Previously self-published under the title, Writing What You Know: Raelia, this book has found an enthusiastic audience that now writes with intent.

Book excerpt: This National Book Award finalist is a revealing and beautifully written memoir and family history from acclaimed photographer Sally Mann. In this groundbreaking book, a unique interplay of narrative and image, Mann's preoccupation with family, race, mortality, and the storied landscape of the American South are revealed as almost genetically predetermined, written into her DNA by the family history that precedes her. Sorting through boxes of family papers and yellowed photographs she finds more than she bargained for: "deceit and scandal, alcohol, domestic abuse, car crashes, bogeymen, clandestine affairs, dearly loved and disputed family land . . . racial complications, vast sums of money made and lost, the return of the prodigal son, and maybe even bloody murder." In lyrical prose and startlingly revealing photographs, she crafts a totally original form of personal history that has the page-turning drama of a great novel but is firmly rooted in the fertile soil of her own life.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Days of My Life: An Autobiography And I was passing along, as I always did, quickly and, per haps, with a firmer and a steadier step than was usual to girls of my years, swinging in my hand a bit of briony, which, for the sake of its beautiful berries, I was carrying home, but which stood a good chance of being destroyed before we got there not taking leisure to look much about me, thinking of nothing particular, with a little air of the superior, the lady' of the manor, in my independent carriage - a little pride of proprietor ship in my firm footstep. I was going home - when there suddenly appeared two figures before me, advancing on my way. I say two figures, because in our country everything stands out so clear upon the great universal background of sky, that I could not so truly say it was a man and a boy, as two dark outlines, clearly marked and separated from the low, broad level of the country, and the arch of heaven, which now approached upon me. I cannot help an unconscious estimate of character from the tricks of gesture and carriage, which, perhaps, could not have been so visible anywhere else, as here, upon this flat, unbroken road. One of these figures was a stooping and pliant one, with a sort of sinuous twisting motion, noiseless and sidelong, as if his habit was to twist and glide through ways too narrow to admit the passage of a man; the other form was that of a boy - a slight figure, which, to my perfect health and girlish courage, looked timid and hesitating the brightness of the sky behind cast the faces of the strangers into shadow - but my eye was caught by the unfamiliar outlines they were strangers, that was sure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life, Writings and Correspondence, of Sir William Jones It may be proper to notice the materials, which I have used-ia this compilation, and to explain the plan which I have adopted in the arrangement of them. The first, is a single sheet written by Sir William Jones, containing short notices of his situ ation and occupations during every year of his life; it is indeed extended beyond the date of his exist ence, to the b0th year, opposite to which the words ow Ge; if God pleases, are inserted. It appears to have been hastily written, a few months only before his death; and although the dates are some times inaccurate, and the notices too brief to sup ply more than a reference, it suggested enquiries which have sometimes terminated satisfactorily, though more frequently in disappointment. This paper however dictated the plan of the work, and I have endeavoured, as far as my materials per mitted, to trace the life of Sir William Jones, year by year.
