Book excerpt: The Silver Star–awarded marine chronicles his service in Iraq in this “transcendent memoir of military service and its personal consequences” (Ralph Peters, Lt. Col., ret., author of Looking For Trouble). In April, 2003, an AP photographer captured a striking image seen around the world of Gunny Sergeant Nick Popaditch smoking a victory cigar in his tank, the haunting statue of Saddam Hussein hovering in the background. Though immortalized in that moment as “The Cigar Marine,” Popaditch’s fighting was far from over. The following year, he fought heroically in the battle for Fallujah and suffered grievous head wounds that left him legally blind and partially deaf. But he faced the toughest fight of his life when he returned home: the battle to remain the man and Marine he was. At first, Nick fights to get back to where he was in Iraq-in the cupola of an M1A1 main battle tank, leading Marines in combat. As the seriousness and permanence of his disabilities become more evident, Nick fights to remain in the Corps in any capacity and help his brothers in arms. Then, following a medical retirement, he battles for rightful recognition and compensation for his disabilities. Throughout his harrowing ordeal, Nick fights to maintain his honor and loyalty, waging all these battles the same way—the Marine way—because anything less would be a betrayal of all he holds dear.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Sherman General Sherman was the most picturesque figure in the civil war. His character was absolutely pure and spotless. He had a vigorous and penetrating intellect, prompt and clear in comprehension and in decision. While steadfast in his opinions, he was subordinate in conduct; he held to his judgment in issue against President Lincoln, but yielded as unquestioning obedience to Mc-Clernand as to Grant. He was an omnivorous reader, and was a storehouse of felicitous anecdote. His cheerful disposition and inexhaustible fund of conversation made him always a delightful companion. Frank as a child and outspoken in his likes and dislikes, Sherman was often engaged in controversy. The war filled only a few years of his life, but comprised most of his activity and achievements. Accordingly, his biography naturally groups itself into these parts - before, during, and after the war, and so it is written, in the following pages. The effort in this narrative has been to give in the simplest form a statement of the facts without comment. The completion of the publication of the First Series of the War Records gives opportunity for a fair approximation to a correct statement. Grant, Vol. 1 of 2 In preparing these volumes for the public, I have entered upon the task with the sincere desire to avoid doing injustice to any one, whether on the National or Confederate side, other than the un avoidable injustice of not making mention often where special mention is due. There must be many errors of omission in this work, because the subject is too large to be treated of in two volumes in such way as to do justice to all the officers and men en gaged. There were thousands of instances, during the rebellion. Of individual, company, regimental and brigade deeds of heroism which deserve special men tion and are not here alluded to. The troops en gaged in them will have to look to the detailed reports of their individual commanders for the full history of those deeds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Commanders of Modern Times: And the Campaign of 1815 IT will doubtless appear to some that this is a trite subject whose interest has long ago evaporated, exhausted by the numerous and competent pens which have treated it. The soldier, at all events, will judge otherwise, and conclude that the careers of that small group of demi-gods, commonly known as great generals, afford matter for consideration which can never tire, and which gains in interest the more it is analysed. As we vary our point of view, so the prospect grows upon us and the more we admire its details. Again, passing from select readers to the multitude, we have the sanction of a, most sagacious observer of mankind for retracing the ground which has been so often trodden aforetime. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Ulysses S. Grant is best remembered today as a war-winning general, and he certainly deserves credit for his efforts on behalf of the Union. But has he received too much credit at the expense of other men? Have others who fought the war with him suffered unfairly at his hands? General Grant and the Verdict of History: Memoir, Memory, and the Civil War explores these issues. Professor Frank P. Varney examines Grant’s relationship with three noted Civil War generals: the brash and uncompromising “Fighting Joe” Hooker; George H. Thomas, the stellar commander who earned the sobriquet “Rock of Chickamauga”; and Gouverneur Kemble Warren, who served honorably and well in every major action of the Army of the Potomac before being relieved less than two weeks before Appomattox, and only after he had played a prominent part in the major Union victory at Five Forks. In his earlier book General Grant and the Rewriting of History, Dr. Varney studied the tempestuous relationship between Grant and Union General William S. Rosecrans. During the war, Rosecrans was considered by many of his contemporaries to be on par with Grant himself; today, he is largely forgotten. Rosecrans’s star dimmed, argues Varney, because Grant orchestrated the effort. Unbeknownst to most students of the war, Grant used his official reports, interviews with the press, and his memoirs to influence how future generations would remember the war and his part in it. Aided greatly by his two terms as president, by the clarity and eloquence of his memoirs, and in particular by the dramatic backdrop against which those memoirs were written, our historical memory has been influenced to a degree greater than many realize. It is beyond time to return to the original sources—the letters, journals, reports, and memoirs of other witnesses and the transcripts of courts-martial— to examine Grant’s story from a fresh perspective. The results are enlightening and more than a little disturbing.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Commanders: General Forrest The writer of the following work served with infantry commands of the Confederate army, mostly as adjutant of a regiment or on brigade staff duty, for nearly four years. It was not his fortune to ride with General Forrest during the war, yet he knew this remarkable character somewhat intimately, as well as members of his staff and hundreds of his men who are still engaged in the activities of private life. From the associations of war and of peace, impressions were formed as to the personality and the mettle of Forrest and the soldiers who made him famous. In the limited space permitted the most salient points have been presented, while many incidents, some of them humorous as well as pathetic and thrilling, have been passed over or only given brief mention. The Rebellion Records, so replete with official reports, as published by the Government with approximate accuracy and fairness; the Memoirs of Generals Grant, Sherman, and Thomas, and numerous other Union officers of lesser rank; the Campaigns of General Forrest, by General Thomas Jordan and John P. Pryor, issued in 1868; the Life of General Forrest, by Dr. John A. Wyeth (1899); The Seventh Tennessee Cavalry, Forrest's old regiment, by John P. Young, of Memphis, and many other publications and papers have been freely consulted in the preparation of this work.
