Book excerpt: THE TOP TEN SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER 'A powerful polemic' Sunday Times 'A compelling, eye-opening read' Daily Express – Did an illegal immigrant avoid deportation because he had a cat? – Is the law on the side of the burglar who enters your home? – Are unelected judges ‘enemies of the people’? Most of us think the law is only relevant to criminals, if we even think of it at all. But the law touches every area of our lives: from intimate family matters to the biggest issues in our society. Our unfamiliarity is dangerous because it makes us vulnerable to media spin, political lies and the kind of misinformation that frequently comes from loud-mouthed amateurs and those with vested interests. This 'fake law' allows the powerful and the ignorant to corrupt justice without our knowledge – worse, we risk letting them make us complicit. Thankfully, the Secret Barrister is back to reveal the stupidity, malice and incompetence behind many of the biggest legal stories of recent years. In Fake Law, the Secret Barrister debunks the lies and builds a defence against the abuse of our law, our rights and our democracy that is as entertaining as it is vital.

Book excerpt: When Judge Charles Harris QC retired in 2017, he was the most experienced and longest-serving member of England's cadre of civil judges. After 26 years as a Barrister, he spent 24 years as a Circuit Judge, working in Oxford, the Midlands and London, and has dealt with every kind of dispute, from dangerous animals and negligent doctors to the sale of the Ritz Hotel. During this time the law has become steadily more complex, more expensive and harder to use. It is now often impossible for ordinary people to understand, and sometimes hard for judges. This attractively-written book, depicting the texture of judicial life, shows how this has happened, and asks why nothing is done about it. Besides revealing the judicial world, this book is also an entertaining memoir of life outside the law. The author describes his post-war childhood and education, standing for Parliament, ballooning in India, encounters in Africa, skiing in the Alps, learning to fly, deerstalking, fireworks, and his family and friends in rural North Oxfordshire

Book excerpt: 'I handed my school photograph to my mother. She stared from the photograph to me. "Lord, sweet Lord, how come she so ugly. Ugly. Ugly.' These cruel words are just the beginning. Constance's mother systematically abused her daughter, both physically and emotionally, throughout her childhood. Regularly beaten and starved, the child was so desperate she took herself off to Social Services and tried to get taken into care. When Constance was thirteen, her mother simply moved out, leaving her daughter to fend for herself: there was no gas, no electricity and no food. But somehow Constance found the courage to survive her terrible start in life. This is her heartbreaking - and ultimately triumphant story.

Book excerpt: The Sunday Times bestseller and a BBC Radio 4 ‘Book of the Week‘ Full of hilarious and shocking stories, the Secret Barrister's memoir Nothing But The Truth tracks their transformation from hang 'em and flog 'em austerity-supporter to celebrated, campaigning, bestselling author. 'Masterful, compassionate and hilarious' – Adam Rutherford In a diary that takes us behind the scenes of their middling ambition, Nothing But The Truth charts an outsider's progress down the winding path towards practising at the Bar. By way of the painfully archaic traditions of the Inns of Court, where every meal mandates a glass of port and a toast to the monarch, and the Hunger Games-style contest for pupillage - which most don't survive - here is the brilliant reality of being a frustrated junior barrister. With a keen eye for the absurd and an obsessive fondness for Twitter, SB reveals the uncomfortable truths and darkest secrets about life in our criminal courts. _____ ‘Words tumble out with extraordinary fluency . . . entertaining and instructive’ – The Times ‘Written with compassion, wit and intelligence’ – TLS ‘Excellent . . . at once a vicious polemic, a helpful primer and a cringe-inducing account of one barrister's travails' – The Telegraph

The Sunday Times number one bestseller. Winner of the Books are My Bag Non-Fiction Award. Shortlisted for Waterstones Book of the Year. Shortlisted for Specsavers Non-Fiction Book of the Year. You may not wish to think about it, but one day you or someone you love will almost certainly appear in a criminal courtroom. You might be a juror, a victim, a witness or – perhaps through no fault of your own – a defendant. Whatever your role, you’d expect a fair trial. I’m a barrister. I work in the criminal justice system, and every day I see how fairness is not guaranteed. Too often the system fails those it is meant to protect. The innocent are wronged and the guilty allowed to walk free. In The Secret Barrister: Stories of the Law and How It's Broken I want to share some stories from my daily life to show you how the system is broken, who broke it and why we should start caring before it’s too late. A Sunday Times top ten bestseller for twenty-four weeks. ‘Eye-opening, funny and horrifying’ – Observer ‘Everyone who has any interest in public life should read it’ – Daily Mail

Book excerpt: "Michael Ratner (1943-2016) was one of America's leading human rights lawyers. He worked for more than four decades at the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) becoming first the Director of Litigation and then the President of what Alexander Cockburn called "a small band of tigerish people." He was also the President of the National Lawyers Guild. Ratner handled some of the most significant cases In American history. This book tells why and how he did it. His last case, which he worked on until he died, was representing truth-telling whistleblower and now political prisoner Julian Assange, the editor of WikiLeaks. Ratner "moved the bar" by organizing some 600 lawyers to successfully defend habeas corpus, that is, the ancient right of someone accused of a crime to have a lawyer and to be brought before a judge. Michael had a piece of paper taped on the wall next to his desk at the CCR. It read: 4 key principles of being a radical lawyer: 1. Do not refuse to take a case just because it is long odds of winning in court. 2. Use cases to publicize a radical critique of US policy and to promote revolutionary transformation. 3. Combine legal work with political advocacy. 4. Love people. Compelling and instructive, Moving the Bar is an indispensable manual for the next generation of activists and their lawyers"--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Dyson is one of the leading lawyers of his generation. After a successful career at the Bar, he rose to become a Justice of the Supreme Court and Master of the Rolls. In this compelling memoir, he describes his life and career with disarming candour and gives real insights into the challenges of judging. He also gives a fascinating account of his immigrant background, the impact of the Holocaust on his family and his journey from the Jewish community in Leeds in the 1950s to the top of his profession. Although he may be perceived as being a member of the Establishment, this arresting story shows how he continues to be influenced by his Jewish and European roots. Book excerpt: The book focuses on Eric Stockdale, the legal author, who has written many articles and books. For those who do not have time to read the stimulating originals, he explains how he came to write about a particular subject, almost always because of a personal concern about or personal interest in it. This book is about his experiences as a legal author, it also deals briefly with his life in the law and describes how he became interested in the different subjects about which he wrote. The book is not exactly an autobiography, but it is autobiographical. Its avowed purpose is to focus on the author’s experience as a writer rather than his practice at the Bar or his work as a judge, although from time to time, inevitably there is an overlap. The more recent writings have focussed on issues of history, and in particular the history of events in the latter half of the eighteenth century, and the birth and early years of the United States of America. It is not yet appreciated that some of the most influential and active supporters of the then ‘Revolution’ were educated at the Inn’s of Court in London, largely at the Middle Temple, and that there is indeed a ‘special relationship’ between lawyers and judges on both sides of the Atlantic, which is less susceptible to the vagaries of political fashion or of the affairs of nations which can sometimes mark other aspects of the relationship.Reading between the lines written by a modest man, this is a remarkable story by any standards. The reader, whether lawyer or layman, is likely to concur with that judgment.
