Book Synopsis Before Newton by : Mordechai Feingold
Download or read book Before Newton written by Mordechai Feingold and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990-03-30 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive reevaluation of Isaac Barrow (1630-1677), one of the more prominent and intriguing of all seventeenth-century men of science. Barrow is remembered today--if at all--only as Sir Isaac Newton's mentor and patron, but he in fact made important contributions to the disciplines of optics and geometry. Moreover, he was a prolific and influential preacher as well as a renowned classical scholar. By seeking to understand Barrow's mathematical work, primarily within the confines of the pre-Newtonian scientific framework, the book offers a substantial rethinking of his scientific acumen. In addition to providing a biographical study of Barrow, it explores the intimate connections among his scientific, philological, and religious worldviews in an attempt to convey the complexity of the seventeenth-century culture that gave rise to Isaac Barrow, a breed of polymath that would become increasingly rare with the advent of modern science.
Book Synopsis Dates in Ophthalmology by : Daniel M. Albert
Download or read book Dates in Ophthalmology written by Daniel M. Albert and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-09-23 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of ophthalmology to its present level of sophisticated practice is an extraordinary story of research, experiment, and achievement. Dates in Ophthalmology: A Chronological Record of Progress in Ophthalmology over the Last Millennium charts the progress of that achievement over the last millennium, highlighting and describing the key dates of advancement. It presents a concise listing of the chief personages, periods, publications, and events in the history of ophthalmology from ancient times to the present. The book demonstrates how ideas, discoveries, and technologies cross borders and oceans. It illustrates the interplay of subspecialties, the changing pre-eminence of countries and cities, and the explosions of creativity and generations of dormancy in various areas. The author highlights the numerous and diverse events and people responsible for shaping this specialty. There are many ways of looking at history: from the standpoint of the lives of major figures, of society and impact, of subspecialties, of countries, of institutions, and of books. By presenting its information chronologically, Dates in Ophthalmology explores the how these areas intersect, influence, and impact each other.

Book Synopsis The Optical Papers of Isaac Newton: Volume 1, The Optical Lectures 1670-1672 by : Isaac Newton
Download or read book The Optical Papers of Isaac Newton: Volume 1, The Optical Lectures 1670-1672 written by Isaac Newton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984-03-29 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of a three-volume complete edition of Newton's optical papers contains his Optical Lectures, delivered at Cambridge University between 1670 and 1672. The Lectures is Newton's first major scientific treatise, and consequently it represents a crucial link between his early years of discovery and his mature investigations and publications, such as the Optiks in 1704. It is divided into two parts: the first part devoted to color and the second to refraction. Originally published in 1984, this edition made available the complete text, together with translation and commentary, of both surviving versions of the Lectures, a draft and a vastly expanded revision. Until the time of publication, scholars had to depend on an uncritical text of the revision and an inadequate partial English translation, both published shortly after Newton's death. Professor Shapiro's critical edition has made a great contribution to the study of Newtonian science.

Download or read book The First Frame written by Pannill Camp and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-04 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late eighteenth century, a movement to transform France's theatre architecture united the nation. Playwrights, philosophers, and powerful agents including King Louis XV rejected the modified structures that had housed the plays of Racine and Molière, and debated which playhouse form should support the future of French stagecraft. In The First Frame, Pannill Camp argues that these reforms helped to lay down the theoretical and practical foundations of modern theatre space. Examining dramatic theory, architecture, and philosophy, Camp explores how architects, dramatists, and spectators began to see theatre and scientific experimentation as parallel enterprises. During this period of modernisation, physicists began to cite dramatic theory and adopt theatrical staging techniques, while playwrights sought to reveal observable truths of human nature. Camp goes on to show that these reforms had consequences for the way we understand both modern theatrical aesthetics and the production of scientific knowledge in the present day.
Book Synopsis Theory of Gearing by : Stephen P. Radzevich
Download or read book Theory of Gearing written by Stephen P. Radzevich and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-11-29 with total page 1693 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated throughout for the third edition, Theory of Gearing: Kinematics, Geometry, and Synthesis is an essential resource for engineers in the field of gearing. Detailing gear design, production, inspection, and application, the book covers cutting-edge gear types to enable the reader to fully keep track of modern gear developments. Demonstrating the rigorous scientific theory behind optimal gear design, manufacture, and performance, a key focus of the new edition is on aiding engineers in designing low noise transmissions in smaller sizes, improving fuel consumption and reducing emissions. Chapters included will discuss key features of Split-Power-Transmission-Systems (SPTS) with equal (almost equal) power share, and Uniform Rotary Motion. Entirely new chapters for the third edition include: Parallel-Axes involute gearing of specific design and gear, and Novikov/Conformal and High-Conformal gearing. The book will be of interest to engineers and researchers in the gearing industry. It will also have relevance to those working in tribology, metallurgy, and materials processing, alongside engineers working in precision manufacturing.
