Book Synopsis The Design of Bibliographies by : Sidney E. Berger
Download or read book The Design of Bibliographies written by Sidney E. Berger and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1992 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The range of topics of bibliographies is unlimited and, since bibliographies are produced for the benefit and use of the reader, the compiler must present whatever data are relevant and organize it in a logical and useful fashion. Also, the work should be presented in a physical format which yields the greatest, most comfortable, and most aesthetic access to the data. The aim of the author and printer of a bibliography, Sidney Berger writes, should be the production of a useful and usable book. While the author must be concerned with the intellectual content and its organization, the book designer must concentrate on the physical elements of which bibliographies are composed--the type style and size, the size of the book, the arrangement of type and blank space on the page, ink color, and the weight, color, and gloss of the paper, etc. The optimum design of a bibliography is essentially the optimum use of typographic elements. This book discusses the basics of book typography and then goes on to describe types and formats of bibliographies. Berger presents brief discussions of the elements of design that bibliography compilers and designers must consider--drawing from many relevant sources to create a generalized conception of the ideal bibliography. This book is a gathering of sound ideas about book design into a convenient volume, with a focus on the particular problems that bibliographies present. It includes appendixes with numerous examples and illustrations. This volume is of great use to book designers, compilers of bibliographies, and publishers who wish to improve or maximize their bibliographical formats.
Book Synopsis The Catholics and German Unity, 1866-1871 by : George G. Windell
Download or read book The Catholics and German Unity, 1866-1871 written by George G. Windell and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1954-01-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Catholics and German Unity was first published in 1954. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. The period of German history between the overthrow of the old German Confederation in 1866 and the establishment of the Second Reich in 1871 was critical and far-reaching in its influence upon subsequent events in Germany and in Europe. It is, therefore, a period that still merits close scrutiny and analysis in all its aspects by historians. In this detailed study, Professor Windell traces the development of political movements among German Catholics during those years and explores the relationship of the various streams of Catholic political action to the larger questions of German history. The War of 1866, which ended Austrian predominance in Germany, was a shattering blow to German Catholics. During the next five years they gradually adjusted to the new situations and were responsible for a series of political movements which exerted a powerful and generally underestimated effects on state governments, on other political parties, and on the domestic and foreign policy of Bismarck. Although a substantial amount of material was available on Catholic political activity in the individual German states, it had not, until now, been synthesized into a comprehensive, single work placing these events in proper perspective against the broader canvas of history. Of this book Hans Rothfels, professor of history at the University of Chicago and the University of Tubingen, Germany, says: "Without being partial to any side, in fact with considerable circumspection, the author analyzes and interprets a great nineteenth century dilemma to which the foundation of the German Reich adds only a specific issue."

Book Synopsis Pioneers of Zionism: Hess, Pinsker, Rülf by : Julius H. Schoeps
Download or read book Pioneers of Zionism: Hess, Pinsker, Rülf written by Julius H. Schoeps and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emerging Jewish national consciousness in Europe toward the end of the 19th century claims many spiritual fathers, some of which have been seriously underestimated so far. Zionist intellectuals such as Moses Hess, Leon Pinsker and Isaac Rülf were already committed to the self-liberation of the Jewish people long before Theodor Herzl. Their experiences and observations brought them to believe that the emancipation and integration of Jews were not realistically possible in Europe. Instead, they began to think in national and territorial terms. The author explores the question as to what extent religious messianism influenced the ideas of these men and how this reflects in today's collective Israeli consciousness. In a comprehensive epilogue, Julius H. Schoeps critically correlates ideas of messianic salvation, Zionist pioneer ideals, the settler's movement before and after 1967, and the unsolved conflict between Israelis and Palestinians which has been lasting for over 100 years.
