Book excerpt: The disturbing educational success rates for Aboriginal students in comparison with their peers have been documented for many years. Reducing this persistent achievement gap is one of Canada's most pressing educational challenges. Numerous reports commissioned by federal and provincial governments and Aboriginal authorities have offered detailed examinations of the complex social, economic, linguistic, and cultural interrelationships that contextualize the educational environments of Aboriginal students. Many of their families struggle with the legacy of residential schools that ripped families apart and caused immeasurable damage to the social fabric. Schools serving these communities work within a context that may include poverty, learned helplessness, despair, and high levels of abuse, addictions and violence. For some communities, student suicide rates may exceed graduation rates. Yet despite many extraordinary challenges, some schools are producing tangible progress for their Aboriginal students. This report springs from a study of ten such schools in an effort to identify practices that appear to contribute to their success.

Book Synopsis Domestic Deployment of the Armed Forces by : Michael Head
Download or read book Domestic Deployment of the Armed Forces written by Michael Head and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, internal use of the armed forces has been generally regarded by the public, as well as academic commentators, as conduct to be expected of a military or autocratic regime, not a democratic government. There is however growing concern that the 'war on terror' has been used to condition public opinion to accept the internal deployment of the armed forces, including for broader industrial and political purposes. This book examines the national and international law, human rights and civil liberties issues involved in governments calling out troops to deal with civil unrest or terrorism. As the introduction of military call-out legislation has become an emerging global trend in the opening years of the 21st century, there is considerable and growing interest in the constitutional and related problems surrounding the deployment of military forces for domestic purposes. Examining the changes underway in six comparable countries, the United States, Canada, Britain, Germany, Japan and Australia, this book provides a review and analysis of this trend, including its implications for legal and political rights.

This book marks the 25th anniversary of the Council by bringing together 25 papers on international law, carefully selected from the proceedings of the annual conferences in the years since its foundation. The collection provides an overview of the issues considered by the Council in its first 25 years and highlights the significant contribution of Canadian experts to, and Canada's particular concerns in, the field of international law. The essays represent the work of leading international lawyers on issues concerning the theory and practise of public international law, including environmental law, human rights, the law of armed conflict and the issue of state succession.
