Book Synopsis Women in Medieval History and Historiography by : Susan Mosher Stuard
Download or read book Women in Medieval History and Historiography written by Susan Mosher Stuard and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was the status of women in the Middle Ages? How have women fared in the hands of historians? And, what is the current state of research about women in the Middle Ages? Susan Mosher Stuard addresses these questions in a collection of essays that delve in to the history and historiography of women in medieval England, France, Italy, and Germany. Contributors include Barbara Hanawalt, Diane Owen Hughes, Suzanne Wemple, Denise Kaiser, and Martha Howell. One of the most interesting observations made in Women in Medieval History and Historiography is the way in which the history of women in each country has followed a distinct course that is in rhythm with other concerns of national historical writing. Women in Medieval History and Historiography will interest historians, scholars of women's studies, and medievalists.

Book Synopsis The Cambridge Companion to Medieval Romance by : Roberta L. Krueger
Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Medieval Romance written by Roberta L. Krueger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-06-22 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Companion presents fifteen original and engaging essays by leading scholars on one of the most influential genres of Western literature. Chapters describe the origins of early verse romance in twelfth-century French and Anglo-Norman courts and analyze the evolution of verse and prose romance in France, Germany, England, Italy, and Spain throughout the Middle Ages. The volume introduces a rich array of traditions and texts and offers fresh perspectives on the manuscript context of romance, the relationship of romance to other genres, popular romance in urban contexts, romance as mirror of familiar and social tensions, and the representation of courtly love, chivalry, 'other' worlds and gender roles. Together the essays demonstrate that European romances not only helped to promulgate the ideals of elite societies in formation, but also held those values up for questioning. An introduction, a chronology and a bibliography of texts and translations complete this lively, useful overview.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of occasional writings by renowned medieval scholar Margaret Wade Labarge considers an eclectic mix of themes and issues in the history of the Middle Ages. The varied lives of medieval women, their power and status within society, are depicted through their own writings; questions of medieval culture are linked to those facing humanity in our time; travel, as experienced by the most prestigious ambassador and by the lowliest pilgrim, is explored; and the origins and conditions of health care are examined. These themes have inspired or informed the author's eight major historical works, but are revisited here with the clarity, wit and discipline of a great teacher. A Medieval Miscellany will give readers already acquainted with Labarge's work new pleasure, and provide an enticing path into medieval lives and time for new readers.

Book Synopsis The Cultural Patronage of Medieval Women by : June Hall McCash
Download or read book The Cultural Patronage of Medieval Women written by June Hall McCash and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cultural Patronage of Medieval Women is the first volume exclusively devoted to an examination of the significant role played by women as patrons in the evolution of medieval culture. The twelve essays in this volume look at women not simply as patrons of letters but also as patrons of the visual and decorative arts, of architecture, and of religious and educational foundations. Patronage as a means of empowerment for women is an issue that underlies many of the essays. Among the other topics discussed are the various forms patronage took, the obstacles to women's patronage, and the purposes behind patronage. Some women sought to further political and dynastic agendas; others were more concerned with religion and education; still others sought to provide positive role models for women. The amusement of their courts was also a consideration for female patrons. These essays also demonstrate that as patrons women were often innovators. They encouraged vernacular literature as well as the translation of historical works and of the Bible, frequently with commentary, into the vernacular. They led the way in sponsoring a variety of genres and encouraged some of the best-known and most influential writers of the Middle Ages. Moreover, they were at the forefront in fostering the new art of printing, which made books accessible to a larger number of people. Finally, the essays make clear that behind much patronage lay a concern for the betterment of women.
Book Synopsis Rituals for the Dead by : William J. Courtenay
Download or read book Rituals for the Dead written by William J. Courtenay and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2018-12-30 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his fascinating new book, based on the Conway Lectures he delivered at Notre Dame in 2016, William Courtenay examines aspects of the religious life of one medieval institution, the University of Paris, in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. In place of the traditional account of teaching programs and curriculum, however, the focus here is on religious observances and the important role that prayers for the dead played in the daily life of masters and students. Courtenay examines the university as a consortium of sub-units in which the academic and religious life of its members took place, and in which prayers for the dead were a major element. Throughout the book, Courtenay highlights reverence for the dead, which preserved their memory and was believed to reduce the time in purgatory for deceased colleagues and for founders of and donors to colleges. The book also explores the advantages for poor scholars of belonging to a confraternal institution that provided benefits to all members regardless of social background, the areas in which women contributed to the university community, including the founding of colleges, and the growth of Marian piety, seeking her blessing as patron of scholarship and as protector of scholars. Courtenay looks at attempts to offset the inequality between the status of masters and students, rich and poor, and college founders and fellows, in observances concerned with death as well as rewards and punishments in the afterlife. Rituals for the Dead is the first book-length study of religious life and remembrances for the dead at the medieval University of Paris. Scholars of medieval history will be an eager audience for this title.

Book Synopsis Women Readers and the Ideology of Gender in Old French Verse Romance by : Roberta L. Krueger
Download or read book Women Readers and the Ideology of Gender in Old French Verse Romance written by Roberta L. Krueger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-02-17 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study challenges the view that all courtly literature promoted the social status of women. Unlike previous books which focused on knights, it starts from the perspective of the woman reader/listener. Using reader-response theory, feminist criticism and recent historical studies, it suggests that romances taught gender roles, often inviting readers to criticise and resist them.
