Book Synopsis Medical Doctors in Health Reforms by : Jean-Louis Denis
Download or read book Medical Doctors in Health Reforms written by Jean-Louis Denis and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2022-01-28 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely comparative study assesses the role of medical doctors in reforming publicly funded health services in England and Canada. Respected authors from health and legal backgrounds on both sides of the Atlantic consider how the high status of the profession uniquely influences reforms. With summaries of developments in models of care, and the participation of doctors since the inception of publicly funded healthcare systems, they ask whether professionals might be considered allies or enemies of policy-makers. With insights for future health policy and research, the book is an important contribution to debates about the complex relationship between doctors and the systems in which they practice.

Book Synopsis Is Two-Tier Health Care the Future? by : Colleen M. Flood
Download or read book Is Two-Tier Health Care the Future? written by Colleen M. Flood and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadians are deeply worried about wait times for health care. Entrepreneurial doctors and private clinics are bringing Charter challenges to existing laws restrictive of a two-tier system. They argue that Canada is an outlier among developed countries in limiting options to jump the queue. This book explores whether a two-tier model is a solution. In Is Two-Tier Health Care the Future?, leading researchers explore the public and private mix in Canada, Australia, Germany, France, and Ireland. They explain the history and complexity of interactions between public and private funding of health care and the many regulations and policies found in different countries used to both inhibit and sometimes to encourage two-tier care, such as tax breaks. This edited collection provides critical evidence on the different approaches to regulating two-tier care across different countries and what could work in Canada. This book is published in English.
Book Synopsis Unveiling the Nation by : Emily Laxer
Download or read book Unveiling the Nation written by Emily Laxer and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2019-05-09 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, politicians in Europe and North America have fiercely debated the effects of a growing Muslim minority on their respective national identities. Some of these countries have prohibited Islamic religious coverings in public spaces and institutions, while in others, legal restriction remains subject to intense political conflict. Seeking to understand these different outcomes, social scientists have focused on the role of countries' historically rooted models of nationhood and their attendant discourses of secularism. Emily Laxer's Unveiling the Nation problematizes this approach. Using France and Quebec as illustrative cases, she traces how the struggle of political parties for power and legitimacy shapes states' responses to Islamic signs. Drawing on historical evidence and behind-the-scenes interviews with politicians and activists, Laxer uncovers unseen links between structures of partisan conflict and the strategies that political actors employ when articulating the secular boundaries of the nation. In France's historically class-based political system, she demonstrates, parties on the left and the right have converged around a restrictive secular agenda in order to limit the siphoning of votes by the ultra-right. In Quebec, by contrast, the longstanding electoral salience of the “national question” has encouraged political actors to project highly conflicting images of the province's secular past, present, and future. At a moment of heightened debate in the global politics of religious diversity, Laxer's Unveiling the Nation sheds critical light on the way party politics and its related instabilities shape the secular boundaries of nationhood in diverse societies.

Book Synopsis Vichy France and the Jews by : Michael R Marrus
Download or read book Vichy France and the Jews written by Michael R Marrus and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An updated edition with decades’ worth of new archival material: “It remains the classic text on the Holocaust in France.” —Holocaust and Genocide Studies When Vichy France and the Jews was first published in France in 1981, the reaction was explosive. Before the appearance of this groundbreaking book, the question of the Vichy regime’s cooperation with the Third Reich had been suppressed. Michael R. Marrus and Robert O. Paxton were the first to access closed archives that revealed the extent of Vichy’s complicity in the Nazi effort to eliminate the Jews. Since the book’s original publication, additional archives have been opened, and the role of the French state in the deportation of Jews to the Nazi death factories is now openly acknowledged. This new edition integrates over thirty years of subsequent scholarship, and incorporates research on French public opinion and the diversity of responses by French civilians to the campaign of persecution they witnessed around them. This classic account remains central to the historiography of France and the Holocaust, and in its revised edition, is more important than ever for understanding the Vichy government’s role in the darkest atrocity of the twentieth century.
