Des éléments d'analyse linguistique des structures phrasiques et textuelles sont présentés, avant que ne soient discutées les conceptualisations en termes de modèles propositionnels et de modèles mentaux.Au terme de cet exposé, la représentation cognitve d'un texte est définie comme une configuration de structures cognitivo-sémantiques, produit d'un ensemble de processus. Au-delà de l'accès au lexique et de l'analyse syntaxico-sémantique, ce sont les processus d'ordre supérieur qui sont considérés. Ainsi, dans les chapitres suivants, sont présentées des recherches dont l'objectif est d'étudier les processus de traitement de la structure globale du texte. Les notions de cohésion et de cohérence sont tout à fait centrale.Cet ouvrage illustre les avancées d'une branche très active de la psychologie cognitive, tout en soulignant les problèmes qui restent à élucider, requiérant une collaboration interdisciplinaire. Il donne en outre un cadre solide aux études qui se préoccupent de mémoire à des fins pédagogiques.

Après examen des données théoriques de mémoire et de langage, notre travail étudie le cas des troubles de la dénomination. Une analyse des réponses aphasiques a été menée sur 10 corpus de patients, recueillis lors de l'épreuve de dénomination de Bachy-Langedok (1988). L'étude des stratégies, spontanément produites par les patients aphasiques, nous a permis de mettre en évidence les liens qui existent entre mémoire et langage pendant la production lexicale, et prolonge ainsi l'étude strictement linguistique qui est généralement menée en aphasiologie. Nous avons également examiné ces réponses afin de savoir si certaines profitaient particulièrement aux patients (taux de réussite des différentes stratégies, nombre de stratégies utilisées en cas de bonne réponse). Une information sur la mémoire a été élaborée afin de renseigner le patient sur les bénéfices que peut apporter la mémoire à la rééducation du manque du mot. Enfin, les exercices habituellement proposés pour cette rééducation ont été analysés à la lumière des données réunies sur la mémoire. Cet examen vise à apporter un nouvel éclairage sur le mode de rééducation habituel de ce trouble et à fournir des renseignements sur l'influence de la mémoire dans le cadre de la rééducation du manque du mot.

Book excerpt: Susan Kemper A debate about the role of working memory in language processing has become center-most in psycholinguistics (Caplan & Waters, in press; Just & Carpenter, 1992; Just, Carpenter, & Keller, 1996; Waters & Caplan, 1996). This debate concerns which aspects of language processing are vulnerable to working memory limitations, how working memory is best measured, and whether compensatory processes can offset working memory limitations. Age-comparative studies are particularly relevant to this debate for several reasons: difficulties with language and communication are frequently mentioned by older adults and signal the onset of Alzheimer's dementia and other pathologies associated with age; older adults commonly experience working memory limitations that affect their ability to perform everyday activities; the rapid aging of the United States population has forced psychologists and gerontologists to examine the effects of aging on cognition, drawing many investigators to the study of cognitive aging. Older adults constitute ideal population for studying how working memory limitations affect cognitive performance, particularly language and communication. Age-comparative studies of cognitive processes have advanced our understanding of the temporal dynamics of cognition as well as the working memory demands of many types of tasks (Kliegl, Mayr, & Krampe, 1994; Mayr & Kliegl, 1993). The research findings reviewed in this volume have clear implications - for addressing the practical problems of older adults as consumers of leisure ti- reading, radio and television broadcasts, as targets of medical, legal, and financial documents, and as participants in a web of service agencies and volunteer activities.
