Book excerpt: This book offers a unique and fascinating investigation into the lives and careers of the British in eighteenth-century Russia and, more specifically, into the development of a vibrant British community in St Petersburg during the city's first century of existence as the new capital of an ever-expanding Russian empire. Based on an extremely wide use of primary sources, particularly archival, from Britain and Russia, the book concentrates on the activities of the British within various fields such as commerce, the navy, the medical profession, science and technology and the arts, and ends with a broad survey of travellers and of travel accounts, many of them completely unknown. Also included are many attractive and unusual illustrations which help demonstrate the variety and character of Russia's British community.

Book excerpt: ‘Our feelings could be better conceiv’d than describ’d,’ wrote James King in February 1779 after unwrapping a bundle handed to him by a Hawaiian Priest and finding in it a human thigh, the thigh of his late commander, the renowned Captain James Cook.Better Conceiv’d than Describ’d is the first full biography of James King – the interesting, though tragically short-lived, Royal Navy Officer in the reign of George III. Captain James King’s adventurous life saw him lay claim to Alaska in the name of George III, fight as a frigate captain in the American War of Independence and test the marine chronometer that revolutionised navigation.Starting in the small town of Clitheroe (in Lancashire), and taking us to the edges of the then known world on a great voyage of discovery, this book shows the development of James King not only as a sailor but also as an astronomer sponsored by the Board of Longitude, while also examining the death of Captain Cook at the hands of the Hawaiians. With cameo appearances from Horatio Nelson, the infamous William Bligh, society artist Sir Joshua Reynolds, diarist Fanny Burney and statesman Edmund Burke, this is a ‘who’s who’ of Georgian society and shows the importance of patronage in the second half of the 18th century.Better Conceiv’d than Describ’d is a must read for anyone interested in Captain Cook, Georgian and maritime history

Book excerpt: Here Gananath Obeyesekere debunks one of the most enduring myths of imperialism, civilization, and conquest: the notion that the Western civilizer is a god to savages. Using shipboard journals and logs kept by Captain James Cook and his officers, Obeyesekere reveals the captain as both the self-conscious civilizer and as the person who, his mission gone awry, becomes a "savage" himself. In this new edition of The Apotheosis of Captain Cook, the author addresses, in a lengthy afterword, Marshall Sahlins's 1994 book, How "Natives" Think, which was a direct response to this work.

Book excerpt: The many attempts by navigators to find a Northwest Passage via its Pacific portal all ended in failure; however, their discoveries spurred expansionist developments that would forever alter the landscape of North America. In Discovering Nothing, David L. Nicandri maps a cast of geographic visionaries and practical explorers as they promoted or sought a workable commercial route linking the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic. The discovery of the legendary northern passage proved elusive, but the equivalent land bridges that were built in the form of two transcontinental railroads changed the futures of Canada and the United States. Drawing from close readings of explorers’ personal journals, Nicandri provides readers a detailed, engaging, and multifaceted investigation into the many players and failed enterprises at the core of this search, beginning in the eighteenth century through to today — and to the unexpected impact of climate change on this fabled passage.

Book excerpt: Captain James Cook’s first two voyages of exploration, in 1768-71 and 1772-75, had drawn the modern map of the South Pacific Ocean and had opened the door on the discovery of Antarctica. These expeditions were the subject of Volumes I and II of this edition of Cook’s Journals. The third voyage, on which Cook sailed in 1776, was directed to the Northern Hemisphere. Sailing north from Tahiti in 1778, Cook made the first recorded discovery of the Hawaiian Islands. On March 7 he sighted the Oregon coast in 44° N. The remarkable voyage which he made northward along the Canadian and Alaskan coasts and through Bering Strait to his farthest north in 70° nearly disproved the existence of a navigable passage towards the Atlantic and produced charts of impressive accuracy. Returning to Hawaii to refit, Cook met his death in a clash with the natives as tragic as it seems unnecessary. The volume and vitality of the records, both textual and graphic, for this voyage surpass those even for Cook’s second voyage. Dr Beaglehole prints the full text of Cook’s own holograph journals, followed by those of Captains Clerke and King for the course of the voyage after Cook’s death. This is a facsimile reprint of the edition published in 1967. For the print-on-demand edition, the illustrations originally in colour are reproduced in black-and-white, the fold-outs divided to fit on separate pages, and the volume itself split into two parts.

Book excerpt: Memoirs of a Millennium is an engaging and unconventional history of the last millennium, told through the lives of ten individuals across ten centuries. The characters and their compatriots are brought vividly to life by eyewitnesses both sympathetic and unsympathetic, and a colourful cast of subsequent commentators. In this insightful and entertaining book, Ted Pocock uncovers complex webs of humanity in a narrative that moves effortlessly from connection to connection across countries and continents, and from the past to the present and back again. The ten chapters explore the lives and times of the following individuals: 1000: Vladimir of Kiev (Russia) 1100: Godfrey of Bouillon (Palestine and the Holy Land) 1200: Jayavarman VII of Angkor (Cambodia) 1300: Devorguilla of Galloway (England and Scotland) 1400: Tamburlaine of Samarkand (Central Asia) 1500: Marcantonio Raimondi of Bologna (Italy) 1600: Toyotomi Hideyoshi of Osaka (Japan) 1700: Sophie Charlotte of Prussia (Germany) 1800: John Ledyard of Connecticut (USA) 1900: Yuan Shikai of Beijing (China) The scholarship is dazzling, the prose elegant and witty, the rich digressions into related themes irresistible. The successive eras come alive and the compelling text keeps the reader in thral.' Dr Helen Ibbitson Jessup
