The field of excitable cell physiology is one which is found quite baffling by a significant minority of these students. My aim here is to provide a brief introductory account, based on a conceptual approach, rather than on a mathematical or historical description. Once the student has grasped certain basic ideas concerning excitable cell function, the individual examples which follow fit into a well-defined pattern. No attempt has been made to give credit in appropriate measure to the many scientists who have contributed to this field. The further reading cited has been chosen with the reader alone in mind. I would like to thank Tim Cripps for help and advice, also Charlie Tomson and Michael Hart for their careful reading of the manuscript. Finally I am indebted ·to Jenny Kenyon for her excellent typing of the work. Part One THE CONCEPT OF EXCITABILITY INTRODUCTION 1 1.1 The Excitable Tissues living organisms are able to respond to changes in their environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Membrane Physiology is a soft-cover book containing portions of Physiology of Membrane Disorders, published in larger, hard-cover form in 1978. The parent volume was divided into five parts, described in detail in the Preface to the hard-cover edition, which is reproduced in this volume. The present version of Membrane Physiology incorporates the first three of these parts, including a section on the Nature of Biological Membranes, a section on Methods for Studying Membranes, and a section on General Problems in Membrane Biology. It is the hope of the Editors that this smaller volume will be of value to individuals interested in general physiology, the methods for studying general physiology, and its potential application to problems of clinical and physiological relevance. The Preface to Physiology of Membrane Disorders indicates our general reasoning for developing such a volume. THOMAS E. ANDREOLI JOSEPH F. HOFFMAN DARRELL D. FANESTIL Vll Preface to Physiology of Membrane Disorders The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a rational frame of reference for assessing the pathophysiology of those disorders in which derangements of membrane transport processes are a major factor responsible for the clinical manifestations of disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of techniques to study ion channels have been developed since the electrical basis of excitability was first discovered. Ion channel biophysicists have at their disposal a rich and ever-growing array of instruments and reagents to explore the biophysical and structural basis of sodium channel behavior. Armed with these tools, researchers have made increasingly dramatic discoveries about sodium channels, culminating most recently in crystal structures of voltage-gated sodium channels from bacteria. These structures, along with those from other channels, give unprecedented insight into the structural basis of sodium channel function. This volume of the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology will explore sodium channels from the perspectives of their biophysical behavior, their structure, the drugs and toxins with which they are known to interact, acquired and inherited diseases that affect sodium channels and the techniques with which their biophysical and structural properties are studied.

Book excerpt: Advances in Physiological Sciences, Volume 3: Physiology of Non-Excitable Cells is a collection of papers presented at the 28th International Congress of Physiology, held in Budapest on July 13-19, 1980. This book is organized into five parts encompassing 36 chapters that cover the various physiological aspects of non-excitable cells and neuronal membranes. The first two parts describe cellular models of iso-osmotic and epithelial transport. The third part highlights the relationship between cell transport and cellular metabolism. This part also deals with the genetic and hormonal control of cellular transport, as well as the lipoprotein synthesis and secretion by hepatocyte. The fourth part explores cell-to-cell communication through junctional membrane channels and calmodulin. The fifth part examines the temporal structure of biological systems in the sub-second time domains. This book will be of value to physiologists, cell biologists, researchers, and biology students.

Book excerpt: Cell Physiology: Molecular Dynamics focuses on the molecular aspects of cell physiology. It analyzes the functional and structural organization of the cell as a unit of inheritance and a biochemical transducer; the mechanisms of genetic transmission; the transcription and translation of the genetic message; the capture of energy in oxidative phosphorylation and photosynthesis; and the principle of semi-conservation in DNA duplication. Experiments illustrate the basic principles described in this book. Organized into three sections encompassing 19 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the cell as a system of compartments, and the possible functional significance of compartmentation. It then turns to a discussion of some of the processes involved in the functioning of the cell, the genetic control of cell function, the replication of DNA, and extrachromosomal inheritance. The reader is also introduced to interactions between organelles and the nucleus; differentiation and control of protein synthesis; the role of enzymes in the regulation of metabolism; and control of macromolecules in bacteria and in some mammalian tissues. The books also covers oxidative phosphorylation and mitochondrial organization; transport and permeability of the cell membrane; the role of specialized cells in the excitation and conduction of signals; and the molecular basis of mechanochemical coupling. This book is a valuable resource for undergraduate students with a basic knowledge of the biochemical and genetic approaches to biology.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of up-to-date research reviews dealing with various aspects of the structure and function of excitable cells. Its overall objective is to further the search for a better understanding of the mechanism of excitation on a structural and physicochemical basis. The chapters are written by active investigators from a variety of disciplines, repre senting many different points of view. Their complementary fields of expertise give this book the rare feature of extraordinary breadth. Excitability is a fundamental property of many biological systems. The mechanisms by which nerve impulses are initiated and propagated, and by which rhythmical activities are produced in nerve, muscle, and cardiac cells, can be fully elucidated only when the process of excitation is derived from fundamental principles applied to known structural forms, at both the macroscopic and the molecular level. The problems of excitation are complex, requiring knowledge of many aspects of cells, including their morphology, elec trobiology, chemical physics, and biochemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrical Phenomena in the Heart is a collection of articles that deals with cell physiology and biophysics as applicable to the heart. The book discusses the ultrastructure of heart cells, molecular arrangement of heart cell membranes, and the mechanism involved in sealing and excitation-contraction coupling. The selection describes electrophysiological studies made of embryonic heart cells to understand electrical activity, automaticity, enzyme activities, and the development of intracellular tubular systems. The text also discusses the mechanism of excitation spread between active and inactive cells. The book analyzes the structure of biological membranes and the effect of proteins on membrane potential and on the excitability process. One paper reviews the excitation process of heart cells that includes the use of a voltage clamp in cardiac preparations, as well as the role of the pacemaker. One paper examines the repolarization process involved in cardiac muscle involving the ionic composition and the kinetic properties of membrane currents, as well as the action of some drugs. The book also describes the healing process in cardiac and other muscle fibers when the heart muscle is injured. The text explains that damage to other cardiac muscle can result because of a sealing process that occurs at or near the injured site. The book also explains the model for controlling sarcoplasmic calcium concentration on a single sarcomere level in a mammalian heart. The text can prove significant to students learning heart physiology and biophysics, heart surgeons, and bio-physiologists involved in cellular research.
