Book Synopsis The Manichaeans of the Roman East by : Rea Matsangou
Download or read book The Manichaeans of the Roman East written by Rea Matsangou and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Manichaeans of the Roman East is the first monograph that synthesizes an enormous body of primary material to reconstruct the history of East-Roman Manichaeans, from the time their first missionaries arrived in the territory of the Roman East until the disappearance of Manichaeism from the Eastern Roman Empire. Through her systematically comparative and intertextual investigation of the sources, Matsangou provides a number of original approaches to issues such as the classification of Manichaeism, the socio-religious profile and lifestyle of East Roman Manichaeans, the triggers of the severe anti-Manichaean persecutions. She thoroughly analyses the relationship between Manichaean and Christian ascetics for the first time, suggesting a possible Manichaean impact on the rise of ascetic manifestations among Christian ascetics, monks, and individuals in society. By considering the dimensions of the phenomenon of crypto-Manichaeism and using the concept of “entryism”—borrowed from politics—as a theoretical model, Matsangou makes intriguing hypotheses suggesting an alternative explanation for the disappearance of Manichaeism from the Roman East.

Book Synopsis Social Variation and the Latin Language by : J. N. Adams
Download or read book Social Variation and the Latin Language written by J. N. Adams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 957 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Languages show variations according to the social class of speakers and Latin was no exception, as readers of Petronius are aware. The Romance languages have traditionally been regarded as developing out of a 'language of the common people' (Vulgar Latin), but studies of modern languages demonstrate that linguistic change does not merely come, in the social sense, 'from below'. There is change from above, as prestige usages work their way down the social scale, and change may also occur across the social classes. This book is a history of many of the developments undergone by the Latin language as it changed into Romance, demonstrating the varying social levels at which change was initiated. About thirty topics are dealt with, many of them more systematically than ever before. Discussions often start in the early Republic with Plautus, and the book is as much about the literary language as about informal varieties.
Book Synopsis A Linguistic History of Italian by : Martin Maiden
Download or read book A Linguistic History of Italian written by Martin Maiden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Linguistic History of Italian offers a clear and concise explanation of why modern Italian grammar has become the way it is. It focuses on the effects of historical changes on the modern structure of Italian, revealing patterns and structures which are not always apparent to those who are only familiar with modern Italian. Although the book concentrates on the internal history of the language, the emergence of Italian is considered against the wider background of the history of italian dialects, and other external factors such as cultural and social influences are also examined.
Book Synopsis The Early History of Greed by : Richard Newhauser
Download or read book The Early History of Greed written by Richard Newhauser and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-04-20 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of avarice as the deadliest vice in western Europe has been said to begin in earnest only with the rise of capitalism or, earlier, the rise of a money economy. In this first full-length study of the early history of greed, Richard Newhauser shows that avaritia, the sin of greed for possessions, has a much longer history, and is more important for an understanding of the Middle Ages, than has previously been allowed. His examination of theological and literary texts composed between the first century CE and the tenth century reveals new significance in the portrayal of various kinds of greed, to the extent that by the early Middle Ages avarice was available to head the list of vices for authors engaged in the task of converting others from pagan materialism to Christian spirituality.
