The concept of alterity has attained a particular significance in Old German studies, which is why especially experts from this field now proceed to critically examine the capability of this term. The weakness of alterity emerges particularly when used as an historical descriptive term. It presents the Middle Ages and their literature in various ways, not least by emphasizing difference. It therefore seems apposite to take the contrary standpoint and ask whether our notion of the Middle Ages would not become clearer and more complete if we paid more attention to invariables. Such invariables can be derived from general attributes of language, text and literature, but also from anthropology.German description: Die moderne Mediavistik modelliert ihren Gegenstand, das Mittelalter, mittlerweile geradezu gewohnheitsmassig als einen alteritaren. Besondere Bedeutung hat das Konzept der Alteritat in der Altgermanistik erlangt, weshalb es vor allem Vertreter dieses Faches sind, die sich nun anschicken, seine Leistungsfahigkeit kritisch zu prufen. Die Schwache der Alteritat tritt gerade dort hervor, wo sie als historischer Beschreibungsbegriff verwandt wird. Sie verzeichnet namlich das Mittelalter und seine Literatur auf vielfache Weise, nicht zuletzt dadurch, dass sie einseitig auf Differenz setzt. Deshalb erscheint es geboten, die Gegenperspektive einzunehmen und zu fragen, ob unser Bild vom Mittelalter nicht klarer und kompletter wird, wenn wir wieder starker auf Konstanten achten. Solche Konstanten lassen sich aus allgemeinen Eigenschaften von Sprache, Text und Literatur, aber auch aus der Anthropologie ableiten.

He scrutinises early medieval visual culture by combining archaeological approaches with art historical methods based on contemporary theory. Friedrich examines the transformation of Roman imperial images, together with the contemporary, highly ornamented material culture that is epitomized by 'animal art.' Through a rigorous analysis of a range of objects, he demonstrates how these pathways produced an aesthetic that promoted variety (varietas), a cross-cultural concept that bridged the various ethnic and religious identities of post-Roman Europe and the Mediterranean worlds.

Damit ist die Wahrnehmung der Eroberten für das Verständnis und die Aushandlung von Eroberung konstitutiv: Erst durch den Einbezug ihrer Perspektive lässt sich das Phänomen Eroberung als multiperspektivisches Konstrukt fassbar machen und erforschen. In einem breiten chronologischen und geographischen Zugriff rückt der Sammelband das Erleben, die Bewältigungsstrategien und die agency der Eroberten im Austausch mit ihren (vermeintlichen) Eroberern in den Mittelpunkt. Johannes Eck (1486–1543), Johannes Kingsattler (1486–1534) and Willibald Pirckheimer (1470–1530) were part of a precarious generation since they had to find their social positions in a rapidly changing society. How did they become the men, they themselves represented in their „self-narratives“ and that we know today? Ingo Trüter examines the conditions which enabled the protagonists of this study to attain certain positions in the field of learning without assuming a biographical telos. Based on multiple types of sources and following a micro-historical approach, the study draws an illustrative image of men of learning around the year 1500, ranging from philosophical questions in the Wegestreit to the learned men’s furniture and interior fittings of their houses.
