Book excerpt: In this book we ask students to do three things: (l)To keep a media journal in which they reflect on the uses they make of the voices and images of popular culture; (2) to read and respond to the work of other media critics, to test their own views and experiences against those of the writers included in these pages, and (3) to try their hands at writing media criticism themselves. All three kinds of work ask students to find and write about texts from the media culture around them, to think critically about what they see and hear on their television sets and radios, in magazines and newspapers, on city streets and shopping malls, at the movies, and at concerts and clubs. To put it another way, we believe that a book such as this can provide only some of the materials for a course on writing about popular culture, that the remaining materials must always come from the media themselves and the experiences students have with them. Our aim is not to inculcate students with a certain set of critical methods or terms or to introduce them to the academic study of popular culture, but to offer them opportunities to rethink and write about their own experiences with the media, to come to their own understandings of our common culture.

Book excerpt: "Matt has always offered great insight when it comes to artist development. We've had many long conversations about what the right move is for many of my acts." - Nick Storch, The Agency Group "Matt understands it all. My work experiences with him have shown me that he has intricate knowledge of how every aspect of music business works and is intertwined together. With that knowledge and creative thinking he has made every event with my artists a great one that has allowed the event to maximize both the artist experience and more importantly the fan experience." - Dalton Sim, Nettwerk Management If you create music, or work with artists who do, there's a way to expose your talent and give yourself a chance. In this common sense guide, industry veteran Matthew Walt explains how anyone with a voice and passion can break into the business. The music industry is bursting with opportunities for talent. This is due, in part, to new technologies to cultivate and expose your craft. As a result, an independent movement is burgeoning, and the number of artists making a living in the business has grown. What's more, alongside the artists, their agents and managers, and those that fill "traditional" roles, there are bloggers, computer programmers, and-best of all-fans who are driving the industry's future. This shifts power from the privileged to the masses. Realistically, this shift favors the creative and independent-but business savvy-musician. Drawing on his experiences from the trenches, Matthew presents the nuts and bolts of breaking into the industry, from understanding the business realistically and building your business with practical considerations to presenting yourself and finding your "it" factor. In a straightforward yet very passionate way, Matthew takes you from dreaming big to taking chances until your moment finally arrives. Your reality check is between these covers.

Book excerpt: An innovative investigation of the inner workings of Spotify that traces the transformation of audio files into streamed experience. Spotify provides a streaming service that has been welcomed as disrupting the world of music. Yet such disruption always comes at a price. Spotify Teardown contests the tired claim that digital culture thrives on disruption. Borrowing the notion of “teardown” from reverse-engineering processes, in this book a team of five researchers have playfully disassembled Spotify's product and the way it is commonly understood. Spotify has been hailed as the solution to illicit downloading, but it began as a partly illicit enterprise that grew out of the Swedish file-sharing community. Spotify was originally praised as an innovative digital platform but increasingly resembles a media company in need of regulation, raising questions about the ways in which such cultural content as songs, books, and films are now typically made available online. Spotify Teardown combines interviews, participant observations, and other analyses of Spotify's “front end” with experimental, covert investigations of its “back end.” The authors engaged in a series of interventions, which include establishing a record label for research purposes, intercepting network traffic with packet sniffers, and web-scraping corporate materials. The authors' innovative digital methods earned them a stern letter from Spotify accusing them of violating its terms of use; the company later threatened their research funding. Thus, the book itself became an intervention into the ethics and legal frameworks of corporate behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the gap between formal music education curricula and the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the professional music industry. It uses extensive data from a long-running research project where high school students were invited to start their own business venture, Youth Music Industries. Not only did this act as a business venture, but it also functioned as a learning environment informed by the concepts of Communities of Practice and social capital. Exploring how entrepreneurial qualities were developed, their learning was subsequently captured and distilled into a set of design principles: in this way, a pedagogical approach was developed that can be transferred across the creative industries more broadly. This book will be of interest and value to scholars of music education, as well as those preparing students for the creative industries.

Book excerpt: In many Asian traditions, 21 days is considered a spiritually significant time period. Ancient sacred texts often describe the transformation of spiritual figures through 21 days of ascetic discipline. Some experts tell us that it takes at least 21 days to create a new habit because of the time required for new neural connections to form in the brain. This inherent brain plasticity is the key to our ability to change ourselves and our lives. Is there something about yourself that you feel less than satisfied with? This journal will help you go through your own transformation, one day at a time. Journaling helps you clarify your thoughts and feelings, and formulate a new understanding of yourself. The 21-Day Journal guides you in this self-development process, helping you set a goal and a course of action. It gives you the space to record not only your thoughts and emotions, but your plans and evaluations of your progress. Learn how to closely watch yourself and learn from your own experience through the lens this journal provides. Beautifully designed with uplifting photographs from nature, the 21-Day Journal includes an introduction and a foundation for beginning your journey from New York Times bestselling author and self-development mentor Ilchi Lee. His encouraging quotes are scattered throughout, and there are extra blank pages in the back to provide plenty of space for recording your own inspiration.

Book excerpt: The proliferation of mobile media in recent years is an international phenomenon, with billions of devices sold annually. Mobile communications are now moving beyond individualized voice to mass media content--text, voice, sound, images, and even video. This will create new types of content that allow media companies and users to interact in new ways. There is a strong interest from the media and telecom industries in what manner of applications and content can be distributed in that fashion, and at what cost. To answer these questions, the book provides 18 chapters from internationally renowned authors. They identify likely types of content such as news, entertainment, peer-to-peer, and location-specific information; evaluate the economics, business models, and payment mechanisms necessary to support these media; and cover policy dimensions such as copyright, competitiveness, and access rights for content providers. This volume takes the reader through the various elements that need to be considered in the development of third generation (3G) content, and explains pitfalls and barriers. The result is a volume of interest to business professionals, academics, and policy makers. The book is international in focus and a glossary of terms is provided. There are few publications available which give an overview of this rapidly changing field.
