Book excerpt: The story of the Hebrew Exodus from Egypt is told in an entirely new way using scientific tools. Science was used to unravel the mystery of the Ten Plagues, and the "Parting of the Seas". The time line of the biblical text was corroborated by data from the Greenland ice-cores. Robert S. Salzman the author has been Congressionally honored for his scientific writing services to the community. He now presents the story of the Hebrew Exodus from Egypt after many years of traveling to Egypt, Crete, and Santorini Island in the Aegean Sea. He has presented evidence of an inextricable link between the events in Egypt at the time of the Exodus and the events of the Minoans on Crete and Santorini. The MEGA-TSUNAMI that marked the demise of the Minoan civilization, also carried toward Egypt, and with God's plan, rescued the Hebrew nation at the Sea of Reeds.

Book excerpt: In 1958, a wave of water towering over 1700 feet high killed some local fisherman in a remote section of Alaska and caused a new word to be added to dictionaries across the world. Mega-Tsunami. After some comprehensive research, scientists discovered that the physics defying wave was caused by an earthquake. When a group of hikers trying to descend Sandthrax canyon in southern Utah experience a series of unusual earthquakes, they have no idea their journey will lead them around the globe as they track down the origin and purpose for these geological anomalies. What they discover, unless they can stop it, would alter the face of the entire world forever.

Book excerpt: In 2015, a deep-seated, chilling hatred for the first black president of the United States grows. America First, a Christian militia, thinks it has found a way to eliminate the president and reduce government control: on July 4, they will create a mega tsunami that will devastate the eastern seaboard-including Washington, DC. If all goes well, America will be free again. The one thing America First lacks is the expertise to carry out their plan. Dr. Mark Malloy―the geologist they have kidnapped to obtain his skills―is not yet cooperating. As Mark's wife works with a renegade FBI agent to find her husband, their efforts are repeatedly thwarted. Now they are left wondering if they can find him in time to prevent America from being reshaped forever. In this international thriller, a domestic terror attack looms, and time begins to run out for a geologist, the president, the country, and the only two people with the ability to save them all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geological Records of Tsunamis and Other Extreme Waves provides a systematic compendium with concise chapters on the concept and history of paleotsunami research, sediment types and sediment sources, field methods, sedimentary and geomorphological characteristics, as well as dating and modeling approaches. By contrasting tsunami deposits with those of competing mechanisms in the coastal zone such as storm waves and surges, and by embedding this field of research into the wider context of tsunami science, the book is also relevant to readers interested in paleotempestology, coastal sedimentary environments, or sea-level changes, and coastal hazard management. The effectiveness of paleotsunami records in coastal hazard-mitigation strategies strongly depends on the appropriate selection of research approaches and methods that are tailored to the site-specific environment and age of the deposits. In addition to summarizing the state-of-the-art in tsunami sedimentology, Geological Records of Tsunamis and Other Extreme Waves guides researchers through establishing an appropriate research design and how to develop reliable records of prehistoric events using field-based and laboratory methods, as well as modeling techniques. Features a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in tsunami sedimentology and paleotsunami research Offers advice on the most appropriate mapping, sampling, and analytical approaches for a wide variety of coastal settings and sedimentary environments Provides methodological details for field sampling and the most important proxy analyses

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 1, 1946, shortly after sunrise, the town of Hilo on the island of Hawai'i was devastated by a series of giant waves. Traveling 2,300 miles from the Aleutian Islands in less than five hours, the waves struck without warning and claimed 159 lives. Fourteen years later, on May 22, 1960, a massive earthquake occurred off of the coast of Chile. The earthquake generated giant waves that sped across the Pacific at 442 miles per hour, reaching Hilo in just fifteen hours. The first wave to hit the town was a modest four feet higher than normal, the second nine feet. Before the third wave could arrive, a tidal phenomenon known as a bore smashed into the Hilo bayfront, with thirty-five foot waves that wrenched buildings off their foundations. That day several city blocks were swept clean of all structures and 61 people died. The first edition of Tsunami!, published in 1988, provided readers with a complete examination of the tsunami phenomenon in Hawai'i. This second edition adds many eyewitness accounts of the tsunamis of 1946 and 1960 and expands its coverage to include major tsunamis in the Mediterranean and off the coasts of Japan, Chile, Indonesia, Fiji, Alaska, California, Newfoundland, and the Caribbean, as well as the 1998 devastation in Papua New Guinea. Dramatic photographs and accounts of experiencing a tsunami firsthand are placed within the framework of the how and why of tsunamis, our scientific understanding of these phenomena, and the current status of the Tsunami Warning System, which is widely used to forecast and measure tsunamis and prepare coastal areas for potentially deadly tsunami strikes.

Book excerpt: Traveling with Skeptics is the much anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed book, Traveling with Philosophes. However, due to the author's honest and straightforward portrayal of the people of France, he has incurred the wrath and condemnation of the French literary and intellectual establishment, with many persons voicing harsh opinions as regards this unique and insightful work. Insignificant writers cannot be crushed, they lie too flat beneath the foot. Honore de Balzac The art of writing is the art of discovering what you believe. Clearly, this most presumptuous writer believes in nothing. Gustave Flaubert Since a person is never happy except at the price of some ignorance, this writer must be the happiest man in the world. Anatole France As soon as he ceased to be mad he became merely stupid. As soon as he ceased to be stupid he became merely this writer. Marcel Proust This author should be deconstructed with the aid of a guillotine. Jacques Derrida There is but one truly philosophical problem, and that is this author's suicide ... or murder. Albert Camus If Hell is other people, then this writer can go to Hell. Jean-Paul Sartre
