Book excerpt: Excerpt from Meeting the Sun: A Journey All Round the World Through Egypt, China, Japan, and California, the Marriage Ceremonies of the Emperor of China The binding of this book may perhaps be the better for a slight explanation. Yellow is the Imperial colour in China, and Red the Nuptial. As the marriage was called, in official language, The Union of the Dragon and the tuix, these mythic figures are given from Chinese forms of art. An empty circle represents in Chinese symbolism Hun-yuan, or Chaos; but when the Yin-yang are added, we have the dual powers, from which Cosmos was evolved. The design contains this, and sur rounding it is the pah-im'ah, or the Eight Diagrams. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: In the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), China experienced far greater access to political information than suggested by the blunt measures of control and censorship employed by modern Chinese regimes. A tenuous partnership between the court and the dynamic commercial publishing enterprises of late imperial China enabled the publication of gazettes in a wide range of print and manuscript formats. For both domestic and foreign readers these official gazettes offered vital information about the Qing state and its activities, transmitting state news across a vast empire and beyond. And the most essential window onto Qing politics was the Peking Gazette, a genre that circulated globally over the course of the dynasty. This illuminating study presents a comprehensive history of the Peking Gazette and frames it as the cornerstone of a Qing information policy that, paradoxically, prized both transparency and secrecy. Gazettes gave readers a glimpse into the state’s inner workings but also served as a carefully curated form of public relations. Historian Emily Mokros draws from international archives to reconstruct who read the gazette and how they used it to guide their interactions with the Chinese state. Her research into the Peking Gazette’s evolution over more than two centuries is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the relationship between media, information, and state power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of Global History has experienced an unprecedented boom in the last two decades and carved itself deeply into the practice of historical research. Despite this, its conceptual foundations have rarely been explored. This introduction to what Global History is brings together theory and practice with 6 key concepts, delivered through 6 accessible case studies. Re-evaluating the central concerns and key approaches in the field, it offers an up-to-date discussion of the foundations of Global History, its guiding questions, and principal methods 'at work'. Doing Global History offers students valuable insights into the ways general concepts can be used and applied when doing historical research. The 6 concepts- connections, actors, structures, space, time and transit- and their accompanying examples will not only help readers to get a solid grasp of what global history means, but will stimulate further engagement in the field. Wenzlhuemer successfully shows that global history is best considered as a perspective, not a theory or paradigm, and guides the reader through ways it can be used in practice to draw new and exciting conclusions. Tailored for classroom and student use, this book will be invaluable to advanced undergraduates and postgraduates of Global History.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victorian Narrative Technologies tells the story of how the British, who wanted nothing to do with the Suez Canal during the decades in which it was being internationally planned and invested, came to own it. It stands to reason that the nation that prided itself on its engineering prowess and had more to gain than any other in the construction of a direct route to India would have played a role in its making. Yet the British shied away from any participation in the international project—only to swoop down on the finished project and claim it as their own when they purchased it in 1875, an event which led directly to Egypt’s colonization in 1882. Murray uncovers the little-known story of Britain’s swing from ambivalence about to acceptance of what would become a potent symbol of Western imperialism. Beginning with the railway mania of the 1840s and concluding with the opening of the new global routes of the 1870s, Murray argues that changes in notions about character, investment, and technology propagated in the novel form over this period enabled Britain to lay claim to the globe. Arguing that literary genre was itself a technology that spread imperialism, Murray shows how roads, canals, and novels together colonized the Middle East.
