Book excerpt: Lauded by reviewers and scholars alike, Paul Blustein's The Chastening examines the role of the International Monetary Fund in the series of economic crises that rocked the globe in the last decade. Based on hundreds of interviews with officials at the IMF, the World Bank, the U.S. Treasury, the Federal Reserve, the White House, and many foreign governments, The Chastening offers a behind-the-scenes look at the Fund during an extraordinarily turbulent period in modern economic history and at a time when the IMF has become the object of intense political controversy. While the IMF and its overseers at the Treasury and the Fed have sought to cultivate an image of economic masterminds coolly dispensing effective economic remedies, the reality is that as markets were sinking and defaults looming, the guardians of global financial stability were often floundering, improvising, and feuding among themselves. The Chastening casts serious doubt on the IMF's ability to combat of investor panics at a time when massive flows of money traverse borders and oceans. A readable, compelling account of the deeply flawed workings of the international political system, The Chastening is vital reading for students and scholars of international diplomacy, government, and economic and public policy.

Also, Alana just learned how to fish, and she doesn’t think she has the skills to catch enough fish to win the contest. She joins the contest anyway, and soon finds herself spending so much time preparing for the contest that she doesn't have any time for her friends. Lar's birthday party is coming, and Happy and Carl can't get Alana to help them plan it. All of Alana’s problems seem to be solved when her new friend Bobby, a sporty bear, convinces Alana to hire him as her trainer. Bobby’s training plan allows Alana enough time to help her friends and possibly win the contest. However, she soon realizes that Bobby’s way of winning might not be honest. There's not much time left, and Alana must decide between playing fairly or playing to win.

Book excerpt: Dan Savage's nationally syndicated sex advice column, "Savage Love," enrages and excites more than four million people each week. In The Kid, Savage tells a no-holds-barred, high-energy story of an ordinary American couple who wants to have a baby. Except that in this case the couple happens to be Dan and his boyfriend. That fact, in the face of a society enormously uneasy with gay adoption, makes for an edgy, entertaining, and illuminating read. When Dan and his boyfriend are finally presented with an infant badly in need of parenting, they find themselves caught up in a drama that extends well beyond the confines of their immediate world. A story about confronting homophobia, falling in love, getting older, and getting a little bit smarter, The Kid is a book about the very human desire to have a family.

Book excerpt: Home is where a person can realize and follow their dreams. Where they feel safe and secure. Loved. That was never my life in the United Kingdom, where I was born. America. Land of the free. My dream. Home. As far away from all of my tormentors and bullies as I can possibly be. An entire six thousand mile ocean between us. Gainesville, Florida, is a city where I can begin to heal from the scars of my past. A chance encounter with the dangerously sexy Captain DJ Rens of the Gainesville Police Department threatens to derail all of my plans. I wanted to start over. I hadn’t intended on the wickedly tantalizing, ungodly commanding, frustratingly enticing man to bulldoze my walls to the ground. But happily ever after has never existed in my world. When my past crashes into the safety of the world I built, all of the walls DJ broke through are quickly fortified. DJ is everything I’ve ever wanted, but I’m terrified of getting hurt. Avoiding that level of pain might be worth letting the love DJ promises with his actions and words slip away... ~ This book is a steamy, age gap, cop romance with heavily detailed mental health themes and mentions of physical violence, bullying and SA (not perpetrated by MC) from FMC’s past. This book may not be suitable for all readers. ~

Our daughter, Shirdetra Chark, had to learn and believe in her faith in God while fighting for her life, attending Nicholls State University, and coaching at Dillard University. Our son, D. J. Chark, had to learn his faith as a young boy and, while becoming a young man, had always kept God in his life. He learned to have faith while playing football at Louisiana State University and while dealing with the family’s medical situation. Through it all, he was blessed to be drafted in the NFL. Thanks to the ones who stood by me through thick and thin. “I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears” (Psalm 34:4).

Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what type of man could wield a sword from the medieval times? The estimated weight of Excalibur, AKA, the legendary sword, pulled from the stone was about ten pounds. That sounds light, right? The next time your chiropractor needs a room addition to his house, then you should swing a ten-pound weight around for a week straight. Our young super heroes self-proclaimed "the CAC" have been transformed into massive males with the statures reminiscent of warriors from medieval times. Being blessed with the strength to wield a ten-pound sword was just the beginning of our young heroes' powers. Excalibur endowed each of the CAC with a multitude of strange powers. At least that is the claim to fame of these three childish nerds. Maybe this was all just a well-rehearsed case of childhood imagination. I suppose we will have to decide for ourselves. These three teenagers believe themselves to be blessed with superhero-type powers. Powers bestowed upon these imaginative young men by the one and only sword: "Excalibur". Excalibur passed down from King Arthur to the brave knight Lancelot. After generations of inheritances, the priceless Excalibur somehow ended up buried in a tomb in "small-town" Utah. Be forewarned. This account of the adventures of the CAC is written in the form of a screenplay, easily adaptable to a blockbuster movie. So if you would like to make more sense of these accounts, and you happen to have an uncle that is a "Big-Time" movie producer, well then... I'm not suggesting that I would be willing to sell out to any old production studio for fame and fortune. I do have high standards. I would want to be paid a ton of money, cash, greenbacks, or cheddar. Anyways, you get the point. Or maybe lots of cannoli. I do love cannoli. After all, what's more American than movies, cheddar, and cannoli? Cheddar is cash for those that didn't keep up. Although you can't beat a good grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup. O.K. Back to the point. After reading this screenplay, I implore you to call for the big screen version of Stupor Heroes. My wallet will thank you. Oh not with monetary compensation; however, you will probably be invited to the premier. There will be a free all you can eat cannoli bar where you may enjoy cannoli from all over the world. For a small donation of course. All of my friends will be in attendance. You will be privileged to meet them both and my mother. Actually that still only makes two. Oh well, more cannoli for me. Either way the blockbuster movie Stupor Heroes is coming to a theater near you. Also this may help. Brent is one of the main characters as well as the narrator. His additional role as narrator made it confusing, it will make sense in the movie. Whatever, you will figure it out. If not, there will be no refunds. Maybe my Mom will make you dinner. Her stew is legendary. Not really, but it is medieval in your gut. Get it? Don't tell her I said that. Let's edit that last line, ok? Sincerely, Miss Garner

Their dislike encompasses the rest of the known universe, and England's soccer thugs express it in ways that range from mere vandalism to riots that terrorize entire cities. Now Bill Buford, editor of the prestigious journal Granta, enters this alternate society and records both its savageries and its sinister allure with the social imagination of a George Orwell and the raw personal engagement of a Hunter Thompson.

Book excerpt: Watch an interview with DJ on CNN Listen to Ralph Savarese's interview on NPR's "The Diane Rehm Show" Visit the book's website: www.reasonable-people.com "Why would someone adopt a badly abused, nonspeaking, six-year-old from foster care?" So the author was asked at the outset of his adoption-as-a-first-resort adventure. Part love story, part political manifesto about "living with conviction in a cynical time," the memoir traces the development of DJ, a boy written off as profoundly retarded and now, six years later, earning all "A's" at a regular school. Neither a typical saga of autism nor simply a challenge to expert opinion, Reasonable People illuminates the belated emergence of a self in language. And it does so using DJ's own words, expressed through the once discredited but now resurgent technique of facilitated communication. In this emotional page-turner, DJ reconnects with the sister from whom he was separated, begins to type independently, and explores his experience of disability, poverty, abandonment, and sexual abuse. "Try to remember my life," he says on his talking computer, and remember he does in the most extraordinarily perceptive and lyrical way. Asking difficult questions about the nature of family, the demise of social obligation, and the meaning of neurological difference, Savarese argues for a reasonable commitment to human possibility and caring.

Whether it’s an action-packed photo snapped during an intense film take, or a relaxed and candid shot of Johnson with his daughters, Garcia focuses his lens on the qualities he most admires in his friend: his extraordinary work ethic, his infectious smile, his empathy and sense of humor, and the joy and determination Johnson brings to everything he does.
