Book excerpt: Some people tune cars, trucks and other machinery. Others tune pianos, organs and other musical instruments. This is the story of a man who is able to "tune" the bodies of people and animals that are very sick or very seriously injured. Tunein' is the fictional story of a young boy with a very special gift of healing, who too soon has to become a man. Rod Harris, a farm boy from Iowa, is involved in a series of life-changing adventures that affects the lives of many, many people, and in the process finds a trusted best friend in the form of a young architect who is on his way up the economic ladder. In an act of service, he meets the woman who will become his eternal companion, and a doctor who plays a major role in his life. The story has plenty of intrigue and suspense, but overall is a light and very enjoyable read. There is a thread of continuity in the book that makes the novel a real page-turner, as Rod discovers that his "gift" is an ongoing one, passing from generation to generation. He also discovers, in his relationship with nurse Amy Rollins, who later becomes his wife, that he is more than just a farm boy from Iowa, and in fact, that he is destined for great things in his life. Later in life, a revelation comes, slowly but unmistakably, that life exists after death, and he is able to give great comfort to his loved ones as he unfolds for them the experience that taught him that this principle is more than just a hope or a dream. Along the way, he encounters absolute highs and miserable lows, and achieves a balance in his life that most people never reach. Tunein' ends in a way that will have you reaching for your box of tissues, and I think you will come away from reading the book uplifted and encouraged.

Book excerpt: When E.J. Levy arrived in northern Brazil on a fellowship from Yale at the age of 21, she was hoping to help save the Amazon rain forest; she didn’t realize she would soon have to save herself. Amazons: A Love Story recounts an idealistic young woman’s coming of age against the backdrop of the magnificent rain forest and exotic city of Salvador. This elegant and sharp-eyed memoir explores the interaction of the many forces fueling deforestation—examining the ecological, economic, social, and spiritual costs of ill-conceived development—with the myriad ones that shape young women’s maturation. Sent to Salvador (often called the “soul of Brazil” for its rich Afro-Brazilian culture), a city far from the rain forest, Levy befriends two young Brazilians, Nel, a brilliant economics student who is estranged from her family for mysterious reasons, and Isa, a gorgeous gold digger. When the university closes due to a strike, none of them can guess what will come of their ambitions. Levy’s course of study changes: she takes up capoeira, enters cooking school (making foods praised in Brazilian literature as almost magical elixirs), gains fluency in Portuguese and the ways of street life, and learns other, more painful lessons—she is raped, and her best friend becomes a prostitute. When Levy finally reaches the Amazon, her courage—and her safety—are further tested: on a barefoot hike through the jungle one night to collect tadpoles, she encounters fist-sized spiders, swimming snakes, and crocodiles. When allergies to the antimalarial drugs meant to protect her prove life-threatening, she discovers that sometimes the greatest threat we face is ourselves. Eventually, her work as a “cartographer of loss,” charting deforestation, leads her to realize that our relationships to nature and to our bodies are linked, that we must transcend the logic of commodification if we are to save both wilderness and ourselves. The Amazon is a perennially fascinating subject, alluring and frightening, a site of cultural projection and commercial ambition, of fantasies and violence. Amazons offers an intimate look at urgent global issues that affect us all, including the too-often abstract question of rain forest loss. Levy illuminates the burgeoning sex-tourism trade in Brazil, renewed environmental threats, global warming, and the consequences of putting a price on nature. Accounts of the region have most often been by and about men, but Amazons offers a fresh approach, interweaving a personal feminist narrative with an urgent ecological one. In the tradition of Terry Tempest Williams, this timely, compelling, and eloquent memoir will appeal to those interested in literary nonfiction, travel writing, and women’s and environmental issues.

Book excerpt: In this thought-provoking memoir, a celebrated writer explores the one story she couldn’t tell until now—her own. One of Hindi’s most beloved writers, Prabha Khaitan spent much of her life as the ‘second’ woman enmeshed in a long-term relationship with a married man. Born to a conservative family, Khaitan defied tradition, insisting on living life as a single woman, setting up her own business and earning the respect of her peers in the corporate world. Despite her yearning to be loved and cherished by the man to whom she gave her heart, Prabha Khaitan nevertheless lived life on her own terms. With a rare and refreshing frankness, Prabha Khaitan writes of her feelings, her sense of discomfort and unease at not being the ‘legitimate’ woman, about what she gained and lost from a relationship that was frowned upon by society and how she struggled to become her own woman. In doing so, she reflects on marriage, relationships, intimacy and distance, the professional and the personal, and the ways in which women are caught within these often conflicting forces. Book excerpt: This book contains the daily, sometimes hourly, adventures of a 30-something special agent for the United States Secret Service in Los Angeles, California. The book is a work of fiction, but the author Scott Racek is a twenty-year veteran of the U.S. Secret Service. Scott adds a sense of realism to an otherwise surreal life of adventures in a seemingly endless thread of actions, some related, some not. The main character, Robert “Race” Krocak, is a former U.S. Navy SEAL, an automobile collector, and, for the last three years, a U.S. Secret Service Agent assigned to the Los Angeles Field Office. Race has been on loan to a Federal FBI task force against terrorism along with representatives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office, the Los Angeles Police Department, U.S. Customs, the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, and the CIA. He has been called out on a weekend to assist the CIA in surveilling the meet between planners of an assassination attempt of a foreign leader on U.S. soil. This takes Race on both a new adventure and an unfinished old adventure. Both adventures are life- threatening, and Race must meet both threats head on, if he is to survive. The story takes more turns as the plan gets implemented for the imminent threat. Hold on in this rollercoaster ride with a lot of turns and a few new twists, and enjoy the ride.
