Fatima e Lourdes hanno colto l’occasione propizia per elevarsi a centri di pellegrinaggio mondiale e, visto il successo commerciale e turistico conseguito, hanno fatto da apripista ad altri fenomeni emulativi. Si contano finora circa un migliaio di siti di apparizioni mariane, fra cui hanno destato maggiormente scalpore quelle di Medjugorje. Iniziate il 24 giugno 1981 e ancora attive, sono caratterizzate dalla continuità e regolarità delle manifestazioni della Vergine in terra erzegovese, e talvolta in trasferta, a seconda delle esigenze dei veggenti. La Commissione Internazionale d’Inchiesta, presieduta dal cardinale Camillo Ruini e incaricata di indagare su Medjugorje, ha terminato i suoi lavori nel 2014 giudicando possibilmente veritiere soltanto le prime sette apparizioni, ma le sue conclusioni presentano qualche criticità. A quattro decenni dal loro inizio, con questo libro si intende fare un’analisi completa del fenomeno, aliena dai falsi stereotipi, confezionatigli ad arte da soggetti interessati ad ammantarlo di trascendentalità per finalità spirituali ed economiche. La trattazione fa il confronto con altre apparizioni parallele per estrinsecarne le caratteristiche comuni e scrutarne anche gli aspetti psicologici. Molto spesso i presunti veggenti sono bambini e adolescenti dalla fantasia estrosa, che scambiano per figure soprannaturali delle sagome astratte vagamente umane, come contorni di nuvole, chiaroscuri di vegetazione, vapori ascensionali, giochi di luci e ombre. Sono infine molteplici i casi di orfani di madre che colmano la mancanza della genitrice perduta con un pregevole succedaneo celeste: la Madonna.
