Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Summer Cruise in the Mediterranean: On Board an American Frigate Or one of the most delicious episodes in a long period of foreign travel, this volume is the imperfect and hastily written transcript. Even at the time it was written, the author felt its experience to be a dream - so exempt was it from the interrupting and qualifying drawbacks of happiness in common and working life - but, now, after an interval of many years, it seems indeed like a dream, and one so full of unmingled pleasure, that its telling almost wants the contrast of a sadness. Of the noble ship, whose summer cruise is described, and her kind and hospitable officers, the recollec tion is as fresh and grateful now, as when, (twenty years ago, ) the author bade them farewell in the port of Smyrna. Of the scenes he passed through, while their guest, he has a less perfect remembrance - relying indeed on these chance memoranda, for much that would else be forgotten. It is with a mingled sense of the real and the unreal, therefore, that the book is offered, in a new shape, to the Public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Cruise in the Mediterranean The wild ocean raved, the great foaming billows leaped and rolled and thundered headlong as they cast their white-crested heads far in the air, and our great Ship seemed almost swallowed up in the midst of the roaring waters that swept her decks as if She were but a toy in their play. The storm raged without the slightest abatement for two days, and during that time our regular, daily bill of fare was sadly interrupted, for we remained be low in various stages of wretchedness. The lighthouse on the Bermudas was sighted, which brought a gleam of joy to our forlorn party. We found a refuge in St. George's Bay, and the next morning went ashore into the town of St. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trip to the Orient, the Story of a Mediterranean Cruise "A Trip to the Orient, the Story of a Mediterranean Cruise," by Robert Urie Jacob, has been written at the request of fellow-travelers who did not have time to take notes by the way. One said, "Do not write a guide book nor a love story, but a simple narrative that will recall the incidents and delightful experiences of the tour." Following these suggestions, but with many misgivings, the author has undertaken and completed the work, assisted in the editing and proof-reading by Miss Ruth Collins, of the Drexel Institute, and by Miss Anna C. Kauffman. An interesting feature of the book is the large number of illustrations made from artistic photographs, all of which have been kindly contributed by amateur photographers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cruise of the Fleur-De-Lys in the Mediterranean The cruise of which the following is an account was made in the spring and summer of 1904. To it is added an account of a portion of a similar cruise made in 1901. In the earlier cruise the yacht sailed from New York about March 15th, was joined by the party at Gibraltar a month later, and sailed thence directly to Palermo; then Malta was visited, Greece, the AEgean islands, the Gulf of Corinth, and the Adriatic. On the return the west coast of Italy was skirted as far as Leghorn, and we sailed for home from Gibraltar July 20th, taking the long southerly route by Madeira, and reaching home August 17th. On the second cruise the yacht sailed from New York early in April, was joined at Gibraltar May 5th, and then cruised along the north coast of Africa, nearly all the coast of Sicily, and the Dalmatian coast to Venice. Returning, we visited Naples, Elba, and Nice, and sailed from Gibraltar for home August 4th, by way of the Azores, arriving September 3 d.If the west coast of Italy and Nice had been omitted, it would probably not have been difficult to include Greece and the AEgean in the latter trip in the same time, or at least at the cost of not more than a fortnight. As such a variation might appeal to some, that portion of the first trip has been included in this account of the second.
