Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to explore the metaphorical aspect of the original work of Sri Jayadeva’s Gita Govinda. Gita Govinda is an overtly misunderstood epic love poem depicting intense emotional exchanges between Radha and Krishna mediated by Radha’s confidante - Sakhi. As one unravels the apparent emotions of love, elation, anxiety, depression, lack of trust etc. one sees hidden layers, revealing deeper spiritual processes in the life of a sincere seeker. The Meditations in this book are an attempt to present that esoteric journey of a sadhaka, his relationship with his Lord and the role of a Guru, as seen through the eyes of the epic work.

Book excerpt: Generations have marveled at the exquisite beauty, lyricism and literary valueof Geetagovinda. At once sacred and profane, its appeal is universal. While aninimitable felicity of diction and an intensity of passion distinguish the workin its original Sanskrit, no less significant is Jayadeva s intensity of devotion toHari. The work portrays the nuances and complexities of love in all its dimensions.Krishna and Radha, as portrayed by Jayadeva, endear themselves to thereader by their human and divine attributes. Jayadeva s Krishna is human inhis follies while divine in his intensity of love. Radha is infallible as a goddessin devotion while human in her susceptibility to anger and grief.By its celestial perfection and extraordinary beauty, Geetagovinda has alwayschallenged and lured translators and commentators. Every generation deservesto rediscover the eternal spell and charm of this great work that combinessensuous beauty with devotional fervour.

Previously, there was little of note in between inadequate introductions to Hindu thought and the more specialized primary or secondary materials. Organ is a competent philosopher and presents the 'Hindu quest' in a scholarly and readable form...it is a key book for undergraduate libraries and would be an invaluable asset in a course which dealt seriously and at any length with the Hindu tradition. Excellent bibliography." --Choice "This is not just another book on Hinduism, but a source of systematic information..." --Bibliography of Philosophy "This scholarly and perceptive account makes Hindu beliefs and practices intelligible by showing how the contradictions which have puzzled Westerners are rooted in Human Diversity." --The Review of Metaphysics

Book excerpt: A handy guide to every religion practised in India In India, the birthplace of some of the world’s major faiths and home to many more, religion is a way of life, existing as much in temples, mosques, churches and wayside shrines as it does in social laws, cultural practices and the political arena. The Religions of India contains, in a single volume, a comprehensive account of every major faith practised in the country today—Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, and the Bahai faith. This meticulously researched work traverses a vast range of topics—from Somnatha Temple and Babri Masjid to Tirthankaras and the Akali Movement; from the Shariat and the Eucharist to Shabuoth and nirvana. It places each religion in its historical context, tracing its evolution from its inception to the present. • Incisive profiles of founders and key patrons, deities, saints, mystics and philosophers • Information on and insights into lesser-known and regional forms of worship, as well as important festivals, customs and rituals • Extensively cross-referenced with suggestions for further reading

Social Exclusion Of Transgender, 8. Kalki Subramanian – A Profile, 9. Conclusion. - PREFACE - The legal, economic and social marginalization of transgender affects every aspect of their lives. Social exclusion is reflected in laws that do not acknowledge the existence of transgender, either as a third gender or as people who wish to transition from male to female, or from female to male. Without legal protection, transgender is vulnerable to daily violence and discrimination, with cumulative impacts. Some impacts are visible, such as the HIV epidemic among transgender in many parts of the world. Most impacts are insidious, with transgender, their families, and communities left to support each other and struggle for their rights. Human rights experts have offered guidance on how to apply existing human laws. From a young age, many transgender people experience social rejection and marginalization because of their expression of their gender identity. This social exclusion affects their self-perception and sense of worth. It may contribute to depression, anxiety, drug and alcohol use, self-harm and suicide. Young transgender people are particularly vulnerable to homelessness, unemployment and economic instability, as they often depend on family and educational institutions for housing and other resources .This is mainly due to the fact that their inherent complexities in physiology which does not gel with their psychology deprivation of everything in their life.
