A few years ago the way Opened for me to go; and knowing that I should probably never get another chance to visit the historic scenes of the Old World, I determined to see all that I could which would be of value to me in my studies. 'we spent nearly six months on the trip, visiting Scotland, England, Bel gium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Sicily, Greece. Constantinople, Smyrna, Palestine and Egypt. The modern scenes in these places we paid little attention to. But spent our time on the points of historic interest. The student of historv who tries to see in his foreign travel as much as pos sible with limited means, finds that six months of such effort is hard work, both physically and men tally, and he is extremely glad when it 'is over and his face is turned toward his native shore. The ex cessive use of the singular number of the pronoun of the first person, must not be taken as egotism on the part of the writer. But rather as a desire to avoid that false modesty which confuses the mind by the indiscriminate and untruthful use of the edi torial we. The illustrations in the book are nearly all taken from post-cards which were pur. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Upper Room Meditations IN the opening verses of the Bible there is an in timation of the sublime truth that everything in the universe of God, both physical and spiritual, is under law. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. When the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters, then came life and light, order and beauty. From the revolutions of a planetary system to the fall of a sparrow there is nothing capricious or arbitrary or fortuitous in the divine administration. This truth is the key that will unlock many mysteries in our study of God's ways in his dealings with us as revealed in his Word and known by our experience. In the chapters that follow it is hoped that the kind ly reader will discern this truth as a golden thread running through the whole. And we will not forget that the Spirit of God is his own best interpreter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Titles: A Series of Practical Meditations BY what various names does the Lord de scribe his people in the Holy Scriptures! How important is the practical instruction to be derived from these divinely-appointed titles! Each of them has a distinct meaning. Each of them leads to a distinct line of practical meditation. Each of them presents a distinct view of human duty. Perhaps we can learn our peculiar duties as the servants of our Lord Jesus Christ, in no way more clearly than by contemplating the names which he has been pleased to give us in his word. We shall know what we are, and what we ought to be, by faithfully considering what the Lord is pleased to call us. This is my present purpose. May the gracious Lord himself guide and teach us by his Holy Spirit! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: During the seventeenth century, English Puritan pastors often encouraged their congregations in the spiritual discipline of meditating on God and His Word. Today, however, much of evangelicalism is either ignorant of or turned off to the idea of meditation. In God’s Battle Plan for the Mind , pastor David Saxton seeks to convince God’s people of the absolute necessity for personal meditation and motivate them to begin this work themselves. But he has not done this alone. Rather, he has labored through numerous Puritan works in order to bring together the best of their insights on meditation. Standing on the shoulders of these giants, Saxton teaches us how to meditate on divine truth and gives valuable guidance about how to rightly pattern our thinking throughout the day. With the rich experiential theology of the Puritans, this book lays out a course for enjoying true meditation on God’s Word. Table of Contents: 1. The Importance of Recovering the Joyful Habit of Biblical Meditation 2. Unbiblical Forms of Meditation 3. Defining Biblical Meditation 4. Occasional Meditation 5. Deliberate Meditation 6. The Practice of Meditation 7. Important Occasions for Meditation 8. Choosing Subjects for Meditation 9. The Reasons for Meditation 10. The Benefits of Meditation 11. The Enemies of Meditation 12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prayers and Meditations He knew the little books contained nothing contrary to religion, and he was therefore perfectly content to let what was in them go forth. We were all told in our childhood that 'I don't care' came to a bad end. Johnson, I must suppose, is the proverbial exception, for no man cared less than he what people said or might say. Pious authors of the first rank are sufficiently rare to make us thankful for Prayers and Meditations, and Johnson's piety is as indisputable as it is interesting. It represents a type always prevalent among the laity, but exceedingly ill-represented in our literature. It is not the primitive piety of the Early Church, nor is it the Evangelicalism of a later day, still less the 'enthusiasm' of the Methodist Revival. There is something mediaeval about its gloom something Jansenist about its mysticism, whilst there is not a little of the Eighteenth Century in that 'obstinate rationality' which, as the doctor himself half proudly, half ruefully admitted, made communion with the Roman Church an impossibility for him. Religion to Johnson was an awful thing. He never learnt to take his case on Zion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. And these things that shall be added bring cares, which sometimes deceive, and choke the word, making it unfruitful. That is our fault, not the fault Of the things. In love God gives the things, and if in love we take them at his hand, and in love use and en joy them, then they do not Choke the word or make it unfruitful. It is not that we prize any Of God's gifts too highly or en joy them too much, but that we love God and man too little ah, far too little. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prince of Peace Meditations This little book of meditations is but one more of very many. Our minds are all different, our method of prayer is different in every case. On this account it partly is that no prayer-book, still more no single collection of meditations, can hope to satisfy all alike. Nor can it even hope to satisfy any single soul, if that soul expects to find in it what prayer alone can give. All it can hope to do is to suggest such matter as may contain substance, such, too, as may help the soul of prayer in its own way to "raise its mind and heart to God." Such, then, is the aim of these meditations. The writer trusts that none of the points are mere words; certainly, he thinks, none are merely futile. He has relied upon his own judgment in the matter of selection and expression, feeling that so alone could he hope to give the meditations the vitality that is needed; at the same time he has not scrupled to make use of wiser heads and holier hearts than his own in the choice of his material. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land and the Book, Vol. 1 of 2: Or Biblical Illustrations Drawn From the Manners and Customs, the Scenes and Scenery of the Holy Land Every sincere attempt to illustrate the Word of God is in itself commendable. On this fundamental fact the author rests his apology for obtruding the present work upon the notice of the public. Commentaries are daily multiplying; geographies and dictionaries, researches and travels almost innumerable, lend their aid to the student of the sacred page, and it is not proposed to add another to the long list. The author does not attempt a consecutive comment on any par ticular book of the Bible, but selects indiscriminately from all, such passages as contain the themes he desires to eluci date. The field is ample, and it is abundantly rich in sub jects for scenic and pictorial description. Whether he has succeeded in working out his own idea or not must be left for others to determine, but, if he has failed, it has not been through want of Opportunity to study the originals of which his pictures are to be Oopies. For a quarter of a century he has resided amid the scenes and the scenery to be described, and from midday to midnight, in winter and in summer, has gazed upon them with a joyous enthusiasm that never tired. The first impressions, corrected and improved by subsequent study and examination, are now reproduced for the eye of the public and the heart of the pious.
