In the chaos of our increasingly fast-paced and hectic society, the annual coming of Holy Week each spring is a reminder to pause and ponder, to carefully mark each day, and not let this greatest of all weeks fly like every other. It is a chance to walk with the church throughout the world and throughout time as she accompanies her Bridegroom through the eight most important days in the history of the world. And it is an opportunity to focus our minds on, and seek to intensify our affections for, the highest and most timeless realities in the universe. We have assembled a team of eleven pastors and scholars to walk us through Holy Week as we walk together with our Lord. This collection of short meditations includes readings for each morning and evening from Palm Sunday to the triumph of Easter.

Book excerpt: This work addresses Lasallian pedagogical spirituality, defined as the dynamic integration of foundational convictions, basic operative commitments, and consistent practices permeating the teaching dimensions of schools that claim the heritage of St. John Baptist de La Salle and the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The dissertation examines the content of Lasallian pedagogical spirituality and proposes measures for realizing its vitality within Lasallian school life. Particular pedagogical characteristics, components of an overall pedagogical spirituality, are present in the original charism of St. John Baptist de La Salle. The basic operative commitments that underlie those characteristics ought to be integrally realized in a pedagogy that claims to be Lasallian and wholly incorporated in the formation of Lasallian educators. There are three sequential parts to the dissertation: 1) an overview of the St. John Baptist de La Salle's context and personal history, 2) an overview of his literature followed by an analysis of aspects of Lasallian pedagogical spirituality evidenced in that literature according to five pedagogical elements: the teacher, the student, the teacher/student relationship, the activity of teaching, and the school in general, and 3) a contemporary articulation of the Lasallian basic operative commitments that characterize his spirituality today, along with their implications for the formation of Lasallian educators Extrapolating from the life and writings of De La Salle, ten Lasallian operative commitments are proposed. The commitments are presented in the form of attributes that may be applied to Lasallian institutions and their pedagogical components: 1) centered in and nurtured by the life of faith, 2) trusting providence in discerning God's will, 3) with creativity and fortitude, 4) through the agency the Holy Spirit, 5) incarnating Christian paradigms & dynamics, 6) with practical orientation, 7) devoted to education, accessible and comprehensive, 8) committed to the poor, 9) working in association, 10) expressing a lay vocation. The dissertation concludes by presenting teacher formation structures and strategies for introducing Lasallian operative commitments and by providing a Lasallian Mission and Vision Statement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is laid out to be a 40 day meditation. This work is a meditation for people to ponder on the Truths of Scripture as Jesus and Mary meditated on the mysteries of Yahweh! This work brings forth biblically based teachings that were alive and strong in biblical times. The first 20 meditations are about Biblical Nutrition. The last 20 come from the scientific aspects of a plant-based diet. The evidence from the scriptures, the early Church period, the Jewish literature, the mystics, and nutrition indicates that Jesus and Mary were kosher, and also that they were vegetarian. The author Jim has related books: Biblical Fasting; Jesus and Mary were Kosher Vegetarians, the Evidence from the Bible, the Early Church and Nutrition; Juice Fasting; and Living Green with Juices, Smoothies and Salads; which are part of this meditation.

The scriptural readings, meditations, and prayers provided in this book have been arranged for each day from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday so as to aid reflections on the sorrows that Mary suffered during the passion and death of Jesus. This book takes you through the pains sorrows that Mary suffered on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. Her sorrows on these three days of her Son's life have been arraigned in this book as follows: Ash Wednesday: The Agony in the Garden; Thursday After Ash Wednesday: The Betrayal of Jesus by Judas; Friday After Ash Wednesday: The Arrest of Jesus; Saturday After Ash Wednesday: Jesus in the House of Ananias; First Week of Lent: Jesus Before the Sanhedrin; Second Week of Lent: Jesus Before Pilate; Third Week of Lent: The Way of the Cross; Fourth Week of Lent: The Crucifixion of Jesus; Fifth Week of Lent: The Death of Jesus; and Holy Week: The Burial of Jesus. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, conversion means abandoning a world view and starting over. Using this definition of conversion, the book examines four works: Augustine of Hippo’s Confessions, René Descartes’s Meditations on First Philosophy, Bernard Lonergan’s Insight: A Study of Human Understanding, and Peter Weir’s The Truman Show. The main argument of this book is that all four works contain and induce conversion. That is, all four works feature an individual who abandons a world view and starts over, and all four works exhort their engager to do the same. This book also explores the works’ requirement of cognitive imitation, wherein a person replicates the mental activities of the individual who has a conversion in the work, and of private engagement, wherein a person reads or views the work while alone. The book concludes with an argument for the educational value of the four works that appropriates Ernest Becker’s The Denial of Death.
