Book Synopsis Productivity, Growth and Poverty in Mexico by : Santiago Levy Algazi
Download or read book Productivity, Growth and Poverty in Mexico written by Santiago Levy Algazi and published by Inter-American Development Bank. This book was released on 2007-06-15 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conditional cash transfer programs are based on a simple, yet powerful premise: creating adequate incentives today to stimulate the accumulation of human capital in poor families can provide future generations with the opportunity to generate their own higher incomes. Looking at the experience of Progresa-Oportunidades--the oldest such program whose results after 10 years provide valuable lessons--offers the opportunity to examine whether the youth of Progresa-Oportunidades, in a not too distant future, will be able to find productive jobs that allow them to escape the poverty that has trapped their parents. In this study, Santiago Levy looks at this question from an innovative perspective, analyzing how the intrinsic structure of incentives created by a set of social policies can aid or inhibit the achievement of the principal objective of Progresa-Oportunidades: to break the intergenerational transmission of poverty. This study can help spark a discussion in many countries on the links between social policy, productivity growth and, in turn, poverty reduction.

Book Synopsis Dimensions of Resilience in Developing Countries by : Jacques Charmes
Download or read book Dimensions of Resilience in Developing Countries written by Jacques Charmes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the latest empirical data on the three forms of resilience: informality, solidarities and unpaid care-work. It uncovers and quantifies these three forms of resilience that are generally invisible or ill recognised, whereas these play a major role in the livelihoods of poor and vulnerable populations. The book shows how the slow but constant unveiling of these forms over the past four decades has gradually changed our vision of progress and development and is impacting the norms and concepts that shape our vision of the economy and society. The book also emphasizes the role of informal economy through explaining the origins of the concept, its definitions and the methods of data collection and measurement. As such the book will be of interest to students, researchers and policy makers in population studies, economics, and international development.

Book Synopsis Varieties of capitalism and Mexico, after the economic reforms between 1982 and 2012 by : Gabriel Alonso Santana
Download or read book Varieties of capitalism and Mexico, after the economic reforms between 1982 and 2012 written by Gabriel Alonso Santana and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2024-02-02 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work departs from the literature about Varieties of Capitalism (VoC) to study Mexico after the economic and political reforms enacted there between 1982 an 2012, which were characterised as neo liberal. These were a 180º turn from the previous twelve years, when the State invested heavily in corporations and even in oil production and export. If such previous economic structure was similar to a state-led, corporatist but capitalist economy, perhaps the new one would similarly follow a specific model. The question of the study is: after the economic reforms in Mexico between 1982 and 2012, what is the VoC of Mexico? This is about the open market, international free trade and investment, privatisation and other economic reforms that began in Mexico in that period. This book also comments on some indicators of economic wellbeing, as these reflect the results of the reforms. Finally, it makes a critical assessment of those changes, before attempting to answer the research question.
