Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the modern science of medicine often seems nothing short of miraculous, religion still plays an important role in the past and present of many hospitals. When three-quarters of Americans believe that God can cure people who have been given little or no chance of survival by their doctors, how do today’s technologically sophisticated health care organizations address spirituality and faith? Through a combination of interviews with nurses, doctors, and chaplains across the United States and close observation of their daily routines, Wendy Cadge takes readers inside major academic medical institutions to explore how today’s doctors and hospitals address prayer and other forms of religion and spirituality. From chapels to intensive care units to the morgue, hospital caregivers speak directly in these pages about how religion is part of their daily work in visible and invisible ways. In Paging God: Religion in the Halls of Medicine, Cadge shifts attention away from the ongoing controversy about whether faith and spirituality should play a role in health care and back to the many ways that these powerful forces already function in healthcare today.

Book excerpt: Victoria Sweet's new book, SLOW MEDICINE, is on sale now! For readers of Paul Kalanithi’s When Breath Becomes Air, a medical “page-turner” that traces one doctor’s “remarkable journey to the essence of medicine” (The San Francisco Chronicle). San Francisco’s Laguna Honda Hospital is the last almshouse in the country, a descendant of the Hôtel-Dieu (God’s hotel) that cared for the sick in the Middle Ages. Ballet dancers and rock musicians, professors and thieves—“anyone who had fallen, or, often, leapt, onto hard times” and needed extended medical care—ended up here. So did Victoria Sweet, who came for two months and stayed for twenty years. Laguna Honda, relatively low-tech but human-paced, gave Sweet the opportunity to practice a kind of attentive medicine that has almost vanished. Gradually, the place transformed the way she understood her work. Alongside the modern view of the body as a machine to be fixed, her extraordinary patients evoked an older idea, of the body as a garden to be tended. God’s Hotel tells their story and the story of the hospital itself, which, as efficiency experts, politicians, and architects descended, determined to turn it into a modern “health care facility,” revealed its own surprising truths about the essence, cost, and value of caring for the body and the soul.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although millions of people all over the world have criticized the Bible and conclude that its contents are myths or fairy tales, this is far from true. The same God who created the plants and microbial organisms from which many medications have been derived, has also provided a collection of books from which healing can be obtained. Bridging the Gap between God and Medicine is designed for both laypersons and health professionals who seek to incorporate biblical principles into their own medical understandings and professional practices. In a concise way, it embraces the need for modern medicine that exists today, while also pointing to the ultimate source of medicineGod. As you read about the link between God and medicine, you will be reintroduced to the origin of medicine from the natural environment, learning where true healing comes from. Faith and science are far from opposites, and just as God provides the literal seeds from which medical cures are found, He also provides in His Word, the Bible, the seeds for true spiritual and physical healing. Just as medicine cures the body, the Word of God cures the soul and body.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take these prescribed pills, and call the doctor (the Holy Spirit) in the morning! The best known people in the Bible are God and his Son, Jesus, whom he sent to this earth two thousand years ago. He sent his Son for a reason, and that reason was to let everybody on this earth know that there is a Savior. Jesus left us with a word before he left, and his word was that he would leave us with peace. When will we take this and make it applicable to our lives? We have troubles all around us. But the Holy Spirit is there for us. Some of us don't even think to say, "Good morning," to the Holy Spirit, who wakes us up each day. We just go along our way. Here are some of the issues in this book that we face, and the Holy Spirit helps us along the way with a word from the Bible. Finances is a major problem in today's society. We invest in the stock market, lottery, casinos, and other investments that take money right out of our hands. However, the Holy Spirit tells us to invest only in him, and he will supply all our needs. He tells us to test him and see if he won't open up the heavens and pour you out a blessing. The Holy Spirit has a word for our enemies too. The Old Testament says, "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth." However, when we come up against the enemy, the Holy Spirit tells us in the New Testament that the battle is his, not ours. The Spirit saves us from going to jail or to our graves. The Holy Spirit knows what's best for us. Don't our emotions get out of context! We are emotional people on this earth. We let some of the smallest things upset us. Then we end up taking it out on our family and friends. We end up always on the losing end and later apologize for our mistakes. However, as you read this book, you'll find scripture in the Bible stating, "We do not fight against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, against the powers of this dark world and spiritual forces of evil." Wow! We've been fighting the wrong person. The devil does come to steal, kill, and destroy. The list goes on and on from our marriages, finances, and family. My book will not only lead you to do the right things in life but lead you into the hands of God, which is the Bible. We all must evangelize God's word in this fallen world! Let's do so before we go home to our Father, who is in heaven. Then he'll say, "Job well done, thy good and faithful servant!"

He was healing all kinds of sicknesses and diseases (Matthew 9:35 PEB). In the spiritual battlefield of modern medicine, Healing Prayer and Medical Care is a soul-searing collection of true life stories and a proven victorious blueprint for a vital healing prayer ministry. Author Abby Abildness uses her 30 years in the medical field to help you to face the often dour circumstances of life. With successful experiences through healing prayer at medical centers and hospital chapels, Healing Prayer and Medical Care reveals clearly that God is healing people every day. Healing Prayer and Medical Care presents three critical foundations: - Rest: "You are tired and have heavy loads. If all of you will come to Me, I will give you rest" (Matt. 11:28 PEB).- Restoration: "The One Who Is Always Present says: 'Hey, all of you who are thirsty, come to the waters. Those of you who don't have any money, come. ...You will enjoy the best food; it will truly satisfy your soul'" (Isa. 55:1-2 PEB).- Healing: "I am the Lord who heals you," Jehovah Rapha. Your outlook about medical care and prayer will never be the same after reading Healing Prayer and Medical Care.
