Book excerpt: Peter Lundy has two joys in life: the rugged western plains where he has grown up and San Domingo, a Medicine Hat Stallion. The Indians believe such a horse is sacred—that neither bullet nor arrow can harm its rider. As they explore the prairie together, a bond forms between Peter and San Domingo that can never be broken. But Peter’s father, Jethro Lundy, knows only one love: bargaining. He trades San Domingo for a thoroughbred. How can Peter ever forgive his father? Is his only choice is to leave home forever?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How were Greek texts on the care and medical treatment of the horse transmitted from antiquity to the present day? Using the evidence of Byzantine manuscripts of the veterinary compilation known as the Hippiatrica, Anne McCabe traces the journey of the texts from the stables to the medieval scriptorium and ultimately to the printed edition. Surviving manuscripts include both magnificent presentation copies and plain ones intended for use in the field. The Hippiatrica is a rich and little-known source of information about horses, medicine, and magic. This book provides a guide to its complex history as well as a host of fascinating details, and includes colour illustrations of a number of manuscript pages.

Book excerpt: The Indian's Pony is part of the RUFF Curriculum Susan Fadler developed in the 1990s while living in Chinle, AZ. It focuses on the plight of the Mustang. RUFF was organized to establish homes for unwanted neglected animals on the Navajo Reservation. She began taking rescued animals into classrooms to help teach the children about animal behavior, care and health but soon found out using an animal helped extrapolate expressions of emotions which would otherwise be harbored or unexpressed by the child. It also incorporated self-esteem where all else had failed. Using a natural catalyst, puppies and kittens, to teach responsible behavior proved to be extremely effective. Teachers began requesting materials to help teach history, geography, culture, and language. The curriculum was nominated by teachers and administrators in 1996 and went on to win the 1st place Golden Bell Award from the ASBA (Arizona School Board Association) as the best new curriculum produced that year.
