Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This resource has been the standard text for basic principles and concepts of removable partial denture treatment planning and design for over 40 years. It thoroughly explains the clinical and laboratory aspects of providing removable partial dentures to manage the condition of missing teeth. Content extends from initial contact with the patient to post-treatment care. Inside this book, readers will find all the evidence-based information needed to diagnose, design, develop, and sequence a treatment plan. The newest techniques, procedures, and equipment used in today's partial denture construction are introduced and evaluated. A six-page section in the chapter on Major and Minor Connectors (Chapter 5) reviews various major connectors side-by-side for quick comparison to help in the decision-making process. Evidence-based approach helps readers diagnose, design, develop, and sequence a treatment plan. Various philosophies and techniques are presented throughout, to allow readers to select and incorporate applicable techniques on a case-by-case basis. Chapters are presented in three logically-sequenced sections: General Concepts and Treatment Planning; Clinical and Laboratory Procedures; and Maintenance. Self-Assessment Aids pose questions at the end of each chapter to stimulate classroom discussion and ensure comprehension of material. Terminology is consistent with the most recent edition of The Glossary of Prosthodontic Terms, keeping readers updated on the language currently used in dental schools and dental practices. Completely revised and digitized art program displays high-quality color images to help readers visualize techniques and materials used in prosthetic dentistry. Up-to-date literature is divided by topic and listed in the Selected Reading Resources at the end of the book, to provide supplemental articles and texts for additional research. All content beyond the basic level is set apart with a coloured design, separating foundational material from the more advanced topics. An entirely new chapter on Partially Edentulous Epidemiology, Physiology, and Terminology (Chapter 1) offers expanded coverage of terminology and basic information on changing treatment needs for partially edentulous patients based on retention of teeth in aging patients. A new maxillofacial chapter reviews the principles of removable partial denture service for this unique patient group. Detailed discussions of prostheses that are supported by dental implants keeps pace with the latest options for replacing teeth. A full-colour design includes clinical photos and illustrations that bring the subject to life. New, high-quality line drawings are enhanced with colour and detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most histories of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) have examined major leaders or well-established political and social groups to explore class, gender, and ideological struggles. The war in Spain was marked by momentous conflicts between democracy and dictatorship, Communism and fascism, anarchism and authoritarianism, and Catholicism and anticlericalism that still provoke our fascination. In Republic of Egos, Michael Seidman focuses instead on the personal and individual experiences of the common men and women who were actors in a struggle that defined a generation and helped to shape our world. By examining the roles of anonymous individuals, families, and small groups who fought for their own interests and survival—and not necessarily for an abstract or revolutionary cause—Seidman reveals a powerful but rarely considered pressure on the outcome of history. He shows how price controls and inflation in the Republican zone encouraged peasant hoarding, black marketing, and unrest among urban workers. Soldiers of the Republican Army responded to material shortages by looting, deserting, and fraternizing with the enemy. Seidman’s focus on average, seemingly nonpolitical individuals provides a new vision of both the experience and outcome of the war.

Book excerpt: This book is freely available in an open access edition thanks to TOME (Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem)—a collaboration of the Association of American Universities, the Association of University Presses, and the Association of Research Libraries—and the generous support of Duke University. A portrait of the game of capoeira and its practice across borders Originating in the Black Atlantic world as a fusion of dance and martial art, capoeira was a marginalized practice for much of its history. Today it is globally popular. This ethnographic memoir weaves together the history of capoeira, recent transformations in the practice, and personal insights from author Katya Wesolowski’s thirty years of experience as a capoeirista. Capoeira Connections follows Wesolowski’s journey from novice to instructor while drawing on her decades of research as an anthropologist in Brazil, Angola, Europe, and the United States. In a story of local practice and global flow, Wesolowski offers an intimate portrait of the game and what it means in people’s lives. She reveals camaraderie and conviviality in the capoeira ring as well as tensions and ruptures involving race, gender, and competing claims over how this artful play should be practiced. Capoeira brings people together and yet is never free of histories of struggle, and these too play out in the game’s encounters. In her at once clear-sighted and hopeful analysis, Wesolowski ultimately argues that capoeira offers opportunities for connection, dialogue, and collaboration in a world that is increasingly fractured. In doing so, capoeira can transform lives, create social spheres, and shape mobile futures. Publication of this work made possible by a Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entwined Homelands, Empowered Diasporas explores how the 30,000 Jews in northern Morocco developed a sense of kinship with modern Spain, medieval Sepharad, and the broader Hispanophone world that was unlike anything experienced elsewhere. The Hispanic Moroccan Jewish diaspora, as this group is often called by its scholars and its community leaders, also became one of the most mobile and globally dispersed North African groups in the twentieth century, with major hubs in Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Spain, Israel, Canada, France, and the US, among others. Drawing on an array of communal sources from across this diaspora, Aviad Moreno explores how narratives of ancestry in Spain, Israel, Morocco, and several Latin American countries interconnected the diaspora, empowering its hubs across the globe throughout the twentieth century and beyond. By investigating these mechanisms of diaspora formation in a small community that once shared the same space in Morocco,Entwined Homelands, Empowered Diasporas challenges national accounts of the broader Jewish diasporas and adds complexity to the annals of multilayered ethnic communities on the move.
