Book Synopsis Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Save Lives by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Save Lives written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-06-16 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The opioid crisis in the United States has come about because of excessive use of these drugs for both legal and illicit purposes and unprecedented levels of consequent opioid use disorder (OUD). More than 2 million people in the United States are estimated to have OUD, which is caused by prolonged use of prescription opioids, heroin, or other illicit opioids. OUD is a life-threatening condition associated with a 20-fold greater risk of early death due to overdose, infectious diseases, trauma, and suicide. Mortality related to OUD continues to escalate as this public health crisis gathers momentum across the country, with opioid overdoses killing more than 47,000 people in 2017 in the United States. Efforts to date have made no real headway in stemming this crisis, in large part because tools that already existâ€"like evidence-based medicationsâ€"are not being deployed to maximum impact. To support the dissemination of accurate patient-focused information about treatments for addiction, and to help provide scientific solutions to the current opioid crisis, this report studies the evidence base on medication assisted treatment (MAT) for OUD. It examines available evidence on the range of parameters and circumstances in which MAT can be effectively delivered and identifies additional research needed.

Book excerpt: Have you ever wanted to calculate the predicted peak flow for one of your asthmatic patients without spending valuable minutes searching for that confounded little slide rule gizmo? Wouldn’t it be great if you could somehow remember all Mrs. Jones’ medications when the nursing home calls to see if it’s OK to treat her acutely elevated blood pressure with some atenolol? Handheld computers are emerging as the stethoscopes of the twenty-first century, and no clinician should be without this essential tool. These small, easy-to-use devices are now powerful enough to help clinicians manage information and make medical decisions at the point of care. This comprehensive how-to guide targets all levels of handheld computer users, from novices to experts, and demonstrates how to make the most of handheld computers in any medical practice. Designed with easy-to-understand, hands-on exercises for each new skill presented, this book begins with choosing a handheld and "getting to know" your new device. It then progresses through downloading and installing software, using charge capture and e-prescription programs, Internet and evidence-based resources for your device, designing and programming your own programs, and going wireless. Written by three experienced family medicine clinicians, Handhelds in Medicine is designed to improve every day practice for any busy health professional. Book Synopsis Conducting Clinical Trials by : Frank L. Iber
Download or read book Conducting Clinical Trials written by Frank L. Iber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A few years ago, two of us joined our senior colleague at Pharma Kinetics Laboratories, a newly public contract research firm just under taking a major expansion into the clinical trials market. The company's unique concept of clinical research held great promise and had suc cessfully endured many of the fits and starts characteristic of entrepre neurial organizations. With a staff of highly enthusiastic, albeit inex perienced, field personnel located in 30-odd cities around the country, we found ourselves off and running with several critical research pro grams for major pharmaceutical manufacturers. Our excitement with the innovation was tempered with the reality of staffing and bearing responsibility for more than 30 field offices and 300 new staff persons, more than half of whom had no previous experience in the pharma ceutical industry. In the ensuing few years, we explored by trial and error many workable and unworkable patterns of training! delegation, data collec tion, and auditing. The ideas expressed in this book benefited greatly from that experience and from the willingness of our co-workers and clients to share insights and problems. During those years, we also sought guidance from the works available on the clinical trials field. Although we found numerous references on research ethics, little guid ance was available on the practical aspects of conducting a clinical trial.

Download or read book The Ivf Planner written by Monica Bivas and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment is a complex process that can involve multiple medical teams and points of contact, and it is a significant financial investment. The cost for treatment includes numerous medications, appointments, daily tests, and procedures. Predictably, IVF is the theme of endless books, websites, blog posts, and articles. Based on her personal experiences with IVF, author Monica Bivas created this journal to help you organize the process, handle stress better, and bring focus and clarity to your personal IVF journey. She created The IVF Planner both as an information guide and for you to write your own story. She touches on everything from the basics of the process to financing to a support network and more. Bivas communicates that the IVF journey, no matter the end result—negative, positive, or even cancelled cycles—takes strength, takes courage, and teaches you to be disciplined. Though expensive and challenging, it’s a journey to be proud of.
