Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1876 edition. Excerpt: ... the temperature rises (even only relatively to the other symptoms), it announces the cessation of the alvine discharges. A rapid and considerable fall and a rapid and considerable rise of temperature are warnings of death; on the contrary, the less the temperature fluctuates the more probability of recovery. During the algide stage, the temperature of the skin falls indeed very low, 35C. = 95 F. The axillary fluctuates less than the internal. Rapid changes of surface temperature are threatening. A low temperature slowly and steadily rising, with only slight fluctuations which hardly exceed the normal, is of good omen. Lowest of all may be the temperature under the tongue; in asphyxia it seldom exceeds 31 C. = 87.8 F.; even cases at 26 C. = 78.8 F. have recovered; none below. In the post-choleraic, or reaction period, the temperature returns from its abnormal condition to its nonne again, yet moderately febrile elevations are not dangerous-, but must awake the attentiou; higher elevations of temperature are sure signs of complications and local affections, which narrow the prospect of recovery. Very high temperatures are induced by parotitis, erysipelas, and more rarely by atypical pneumonia. Roseola and other exanthems do not always induce a rise of temperature. A normal or quasi-normal temperature in the tost-choleraic stage is no guaranty of recovery; but 42 is considered mortal. In a typhoidal reaetion the temperature may be normal or a little higher, or rise above, and take a remittent course; the are stormy cases; if they do not end by death at once, they ar much protracted. Parenchymatous nephritis is one of the sequels in both forms of reaction. The most unfavorable omen in the post-choleraic period k when a normal or elevated...

Book excerpt: The physiology of man is a complex subject. Unfortunately the regulation of temperature in the human body is not always well explained in textbooks. Many conference proceedings on the subject have been produced that give excellent detail on research topics. However, the subject matter is rarely presented as a composite whole. New technology has broadened the scope of methods available for studying body temperature. Thermography in particular has made it possible to record in real time the temperature distribution of large areas of the body surface. Modem image processing methods permit dynamic studies to be carried out and detailed analyses made retrospectively-a tremendous advance over the complex and slow techniques formerly used by physiologists. Yet although the associa tion between disease and temperature is as old as medicine itself, beyond the implicit faith in the clinical mercury thermometer, other measuring techniques are finding a slow acceptance. This book is designed to put into perspective the critical factors that make up "body temperature. " Body temperature cannot be viewed as a static entity but rather must be seen as a dynamic process. An understanding of this phenomenon is important to all who use thermal imaging and measuring techniques in clinical medi cine. These methods have, in recent years, brought engineers, physi cists, technicians, and clinicians together. Inevitably, however, there v vi Preface are gaps and overlaps in technology and understanding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of bio- and nano-technology in the last decades has led to the emergence of a new and unique type of medicine known as non-biological complex drugs (NBCDs). This book illustrates the challenges associated with NBCD development, as well as the complexity of assessing the effects of manufacturing changes on innovator and follow-on batches of NBCDs. It also touches upon proven marketing authorization requirements for biosimilars that could be effective in evaluating follow-on NBCDs, including a demonstration of control over the manufacturing process and a need for detailed physico-chemical characterization and (pre)clinical tests. This book is meant to be used for years to come as a standard reference work for the development of NBCDs. Moreover, this book aims to stimulate discussions and further our thinking to ensure that decisions regarding the approval of complex drugs are made with relevant scientific data on the table.
