Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can we know anything for certain? Dogmatists think we can, sceptics think we cannot, and epistemology is the great debate between them. Some dogmatists seek certainty in the deliverances of the senses. Sceptics object that the senses are not an adequate basis for certain knowledge. Other dogmatists seek certainty in the deliverances of pure reason. Sceptics object that rational self-evidence is no guarantee of truth. This book is an introductory and historically-based survey of the debate, siding for the most part with scepticism to show that the desire to vanquish it has often led to doctrines of idealism or anti-realism. Scepticism, science and common sense produce another view, fallibilism or critical rationalism: although we can have little or no certain knowledge, as the sceptics maintain, we can and do have plenty of conjectural knowledge. Fallibilism incorporates an uncompromising realism about perception, science, and the nature of truth.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Science and Common Sense: A Lecture Introductory to the Session 1858-59 of the St. Louis Medical College I propose in the present essay the reverse of this. I shall attempt to deliver a Medical lecture to a popular audience. I shall endeavor to make it such a lecture as might be delivered in the class room; but I hope at the same time to make my subject so plain that the people generally, with a little atten tion, will be able to understand me. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A startling revelation on arthritis...and what you can do about it in your own home. Here are the results of 12 years of research by the author, Dan Dale Alexander. In these pages an authority reports on his findings about the disease...he lists successful steps which can be taken to bring relief. Laboratory tests by the author developed a plan and a dietary regime which have brought better health to arthritics and have caused their pains to disappear. The Science Editor of The New York Times has reported that arthritis is a lubrication problem. The Times said, in part, that while both cortisone and ACTH are still more precious than radium it is predicted that both are on the way out as far as arthritis is concerned. Unlike present “cures supposedly caused by costly miracle drugs, this book gives a complete outline of an inexpensive corrective diet which lubricates the patient’s joints and returns arthritis to better health.

Book excerpt: To endow computers with common sense is one of the major long-term goals of Artificial Intelligence research. One approach to this problem is to formalize commonsense reasoning using mathematical logic. Commonsense Reasoning is a detailed, high-level reference on logic-based commonsense reasoning. It uses the event calculus, a highly powerful and usable tool for commonsense reasoning, which Erik T. Mueller demonstrates as the most effective tool for the broadest range of applications. He provides an up-to-date work promoting the use of the event calculus for commonsense reasoning, and bringing into one place information scattered across many books and papers. Mueller shares the knowledge gained in using the event calculus and extends the literature with detailed event calculus solutions to problems that span many areas of the commonsense world. Covers key areas of commonsense reasoning including action, change, defaults, space, and mental states. The first full book on commonsense reasoning to use the event calculus. Contextualizes the event calculus within the framework of commonsense reasoning, introducing the event calculus as the best method overall. Focuses on how to use the event calculus formalism to perform commonsense reasoning, while existing papers and books examine the formalisms themselves. Includes fully worked out proofs and circumscriptions for every example.

Book excerpt: Modern technology has impacted healthcare and interactions between patients and healthcare providers through a variety of means including the internet, social media, mobile devices, and the internet of things. These new technologies have empowered, frustrated, educated, and confused patients by making educational materials more widely available and allowing patients to monitor their own vital signs and self-diagnose. Further analysis of these and future technologies is needed in order to provide new approaches to empowerment, reduce mistakes, and improve overall healthcare. Impacts of Information Technology on Patient Care and Empowerment is a critical scholarly resource that delves into patient access to information and the effect that access has on their relationship with healthcare providers and their health outcomes. Featuring a range of topics such as gamification, mobile computing, and risk analysis, this book is ideal for healthcare practitioners, doctors, nurses, surgeons, hospital staff, medical administrators, patient advocates, researchers, academicians, policymakers, and healthcare students.

It is to help in minor illnesses and to give a healthier and nontraditional approach to those who seek more than the current Western approach to health care.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is the Mona Lisa the most famous painting in the world? Why did Facebook succeed when other social networking sites failed? Did the surge in Iraq really lead to less violence? And does higher pay incentivize people to work harder? If you think the answers to these questions are a matter of common sense, think again. As sociologist and network science pioneer Duncan Watts explains in this provocative book, the explanations that we give for the outcomes that we observe in life-explanations that seem obvious once we know the answer-are less useful than they seem. Watts shows how commonsense reasoning and history conspire to mislead us into thinking that we understand more about the world of human behavior than we do; and in turn, why attempts to predict, manage, or manipulate social and economic systems so often go awry. Only by understanding how and when common sense fails can we improve how we plan for the future, as well as understand the present-an argument that has important implications in politics, business, marketing, and even everyday life.
