This book was released on 2011 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of how three kinds of youth organizations have integrated digital practices into their programs. Digital media and technology have become culturally and economically powerful parts of contemporary middle-class American childhoods. Immersed in various forms of digital media as well as mobile and Web-based technologies, young people today appear to develop knowledge and skills through participation in media. This MacArthur Report examines the ways in which afterschool programs, libraries, and museums use digital media to support extracurricular learning. It investigates how these three varieties of youth-serving organizations have incorporated technological infrastructure and digital practices into their programs; what types of participation and learning digital practices support; and how research in digital media and learning can contribute to better integration of technology within and across these organizations. The authors review a range of programs (including the long-running Computer Clubhouse movement, established in 1993 in partnership with MIT's Media Lab), and then use the idea of "media ecologies" to investigate the role that digital media play (or could play) in these "intermediary spaces for learning." They call for less anecdotal, more empirical and methodologically sound studies to help us understand the affordances of digital media for learning within and across these programs; for research focused on the relationship between digital media and the effectiveness of youth-serving organizations; and for further study of schools within childhood media ecologies.

Book excerpt: The media industry plays a vital role in informing and entertaining the public. Media ownership and the availability of diverse programming have been a long-standing concern of Congress. Despite numerous programming choices in TV and radio available to the public, independently produced programming ¿ that is, programming not affiliated with broadcast networks or cable operators ¿ has decreased through the years. This report discusses: (1) the extent to which the sources of TV programming have changed over the last decade; (2) the factors industry stakeholders identified as affecting the availability of independent TV programming; and (3) the factors industry stakeholders identified as influencing programming decisions in radio. Book excerpt: This is the most comprehensive textbook on school library administration available, now updated to include the latest standards and address new technologies. This reference text provides a complete instructional overview of the workings of the library media center—from the basics of administration, budgeting, facilities management, organization, selection of materials, and staffing to explanations on how to promote information literacy and the value of digital tools like blogs, wikis, and podcasting. Since the publication of the fourth edition of Administering the School Library Media Center in 2004, many changes have altered the landscape of school library administration: the implementation of NCLB legislation and the revision of AASL standards, just to mention two. The book is divided into 14 chapters, each devoted to a major topic in school library media management. This latest edition gives media specialists a roadmap for designing a school library that is functional and intellectually stimulating, while leading sources provide guidance for further research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking two-volume set provides readers with the information they need to grasp new developments in the swiftly evolving field of media literacy. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) proclaimed media literacy a "fundamental human right." How fitting that there is finally a definitive handbook to help students and the general public alike become better informed, more critical consumers of mass media. In these A–Z volumes, readers can learn about methodologies and assessment strategies; get information about sectors, such as community media and media activism; and explore areas of study, such as journalism, advertising, and political communications. The rapid evolution of media systems, particularly digital media, is emphasized, and writings by notable media literacy scholars are included. In addition to providing a wide range of qualitative approaches to media literacy analysis, the handbook also offers a wealth of media literacy resources. These include lists of media literacy organizations and national media literacy programs, plus relevant books, websites, videos, and articles.

Book excerpt: The 2006 volume of the 31 year old Educational Media and Technology Yearbook series continues the legacy of its predecessors. It highlights the major trends of the previous year, noting both renewed interest in multicultural perspectives and the ever-growing interest in online learning. It discusses advances in the school and library media worlds, which continue to reel from budget cuts and hiring freezes. It profiles two outstanding individuals: Michael Molenda (Associate Professor, Instructional Systems Technology, Indiana University, Bloomington) and Ron Oliver (Foundation Professor of Interactive Multimedia, Edith Cowan University, Perth, Western Australia). It also identifies instructional technology-related organizations and graduate programs in North America. The book concludes with a mediagraphy of journals, books, ERIC documents, journal articles, and nonprint resources. As a repository of so much valuable data and information, it is, quite simply, a volume no self-respecting media and technology professional should be without.
