Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of stories about the events of May 1992, which were told as part of a wide discussion and debate about "democracy" in Thailand. It was not written as a search for the essential truth about the May massacre as to see how these discourses shape our understanding of the workings of politics -- and thus produce truths about Thai politics. The author argues that much of the meaning of the stories comes not from the facts themselves, but from the discursive economies of the text, how the text was produced and exchanged as a social activity. This narrative approach to Thai politics is timely because the events of May 1992 were the first popular movement to follow the disintegration of the Soviet Union, which in turn constituted a crisis for social science that relied so heavily on the bipolar methodology that attended the bipolar world-view of the Cold War.

Book excerpt: Following the development of the most pervasive medium in Australia, this is the first full-scale, national history of the country's commercial radio. From the experiments and schemes of the 1920s through the introduction of digital radio in 2009, this sweeping study moves from Sydney to Adelaide, Launceston to Cairns, Broken Hill to Albany. Exploring the varied programming genres of drama, music, quiz shows, sports, and politics, the in-depth research traces the engagement of commercial radio with various communities of Australian listeners. In addition, many of the iconic names of Australian radio are featured, including George Edwards, Grace Gibson, Jack Davey, Bob Dyer, Bob Rogers, Norman Banks, Andrea, Brian White, John Laws, and Alan Jones.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who are U.S. journalists? What are their backgrounds and educational experiences? Why did they choose journalism as an occupation? What do they think about their work? What are their professional and ethical values? What kinds of work do they consider their best? Do men differ from women on these questions? Do ethnic and racial minorities differ from the majority? Do journalists working for different print and broadcast news media differ? This book uses findings from the most comprehensive and representative study ever done of the demographic and educational backgrounds, working conditions, and professional and ethical values of 1,410 U.S. print and broadcast journalists working in the 1990s to answer these questions, including separate analyses for women and minority news people. It also compares many of these findings with those from the major studies of the early 1970s and 1980s. As such, it should be the standard reference on U.S. journalists for years to come. In addition, this study goes beyond the previous two in adding more open-ended questions to explain and enrich quantitative findings, in the belief that the numbers by themselves are not enough to provide explanations for the patterns that emerge. This book includes more of the journalists' own words to fill this gap, as well as an analysis of samples of their self-selected best work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seib examines the ethical issues underlying the volatile relationship between journalists and politicians. It provides an inside look at how reporters and candidates do their jobs. From the screening process news organizations use to decide which candidates to cover, to the truth-testing of political ads, to the controversies surrounding election night projections, this work articulates crucial ethical questions and helps readers in their search for answers. As a political communications text, Campaigns and Conscience looks at the many facets of political journalism: what reporters need to know before covering a campaign; how to approach the character issue; how to keep up with the frantic pace of a campaign; why campaign ads should be covered as news; the allure and dangers of polls, projections, and endorsements; and the responsibility of the press to cover one of the most powerful quasi-political institutions--the press itself.
