Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Servo Motors and Industrial Control Theory is the only text focused on the fundamentals of servo motors and control theory. Graphical methods for classical control theory have been augmented with worked examples using MatLab and Mathcad to reflect the reality of the way engineers solve control problems in the field today. State variable feedback control theory is introduced clearly and simply, with practical examples that help students approach what can be seen as complicated problems with confidence. This updated second edition includes expanded discussion of Nyquist and Root Locus stability criteria and the role of sensors, as well as new Mathcad examples. A range of parameters are introduced for each servo control system discussed, making this book a comprehensive learning tool for students and an accessible information resource for control system designers who want to keep their knowledge up-to-date. Book excerpt: This book focuses on pneumatic servo systems analysis, control and application in robotic systems. The pneumatic servo systems are composed by pneumatic artificial muscles or cylinders, which are two important pneumatic actuators in industrial application. The active disturbance rejection control technique is used effectively to solve strong nonlinearity and uncertain factors for the pneumatic servo systems. Nonlinear feedback control, back-stepping control, finite-time control, sliding mode control and several other control laws are proposed to make the pneumatic servo systems have better control performances. The book establishes a fundamental framework for this topic, while emphasizing the importance of integrated analysis. The book is intended for undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in this field and engineers working on the applications of pneumatic servo systems. Advances in Industrial Control reports and encourages the transfer of technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series Advances in Industrial Control aims to report and encourage technology transfer in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. New theory, new controllers, actuators, sensors, new industrial processes, computer methods, new applications, new philosophies , new challenges. Much of this development work resides in industrial reports, feasibility study papers and the reports of advanced collaborative projects. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of such new work in all aspects of industrial control for wider and rapid dissemination. Hard disk drive systems are ubiquitous in today’s computer systems and the technology is still evolving. There is a review of hard disk drive technology and construction in the early pages of this monograph that looks at the characteristics of the disks and there it can be read that: “bit density... continues to increase at an amazing rate”, “spindle speed... the move to faster and faster spindle speeds continue”, “form factors... the trend...is downward... to smaller and smaller drives”, “performance... factors are improving”, “redundant arrays of inexpensive disks... becoming increasingly common, and is now seen in consumer desktop machines”, “reliability... is improving slowly... it is very hard to improve the reliability of a product when it is changing rapidly” and finally “interfaces... continue to create new and improved standards... to match the increase in performance of the hard disks themselves”.

Book excerpt: Drives and Control for Industrial Automation presents the material necessary for an understanding of servo control in automation. Beginning with a macroscopic view of its subject, treating drives and control as parts of a single system, the book then pursues a detailed discussion of the major components of servo control: sensors, controllers and actuators. Throughout, the mechatronic approach – a synergistic integration of the components – is maintained, in keeping with current practice. The authors’ holistic approach does not preclude the reader from learning in a step-by-step fashion – each chapter contains material that can be studied separately without compromising understanding. Drives are described in several chapters according to the way they are usually classified in industry, each comprised of its actuators and sensors. The controller is discussed alongside. Topics of recent and current interest – piezoelectricity, digital communications and future trends – are detailed in their own chapters.

Book excerpt: Mechatronic systems are used in a range of consumer products from large-scale braking systems in vehicular agents to small-scale integrated sensors in mobile phones. To keep pace in the competitive consumer electronics industry, companies need to continuously improve servo evaluation and position control of these mechatronic systems. Advances in High-Performance Motion Control of Mechatronic Systems covers advanced control topics for mechatronic applications. In particular, the book examines control systems design for ultra-fast and ultra-precise positioning of mechanical actuators in mechatronic systems. The book systematically describes motion control design methods for trajectory design, sampled-data precise positioning, transient control using switching control, and dual-stage actuator control. Each method is described in detail, from theoretical aspects to examples of actual industry applications including hard disk drives, optical disk drives, galvano scanners, personal mobility robots, and more. This helps readers better understand how to translate control theories and algorithms from theory to design and implementation in realistic engineering systems. The book also identifies important research directions and advanced control techniques that may provide solutions for the next generation of high-performance mechatronics. Bridging research and industry, this book presents state-of-the-art control design methodologies that are widely applicable to industries such as manufacturing, robotics, home appliances, automobiles, printers, and optical drives. It guides readers toward more effective solutions for high-performance mechatronic systems in their own products.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces non-identifier-based adaptive control (with and without internal model) and its application to the current, speed and position control of mechatronic systems such as electrical synchronous machines, wind turbine systems, industrial servo systems, and rigid-link, revolute-joint robots. In mechatronics, there is often only rough knowledge of the system. Due to parameter uncertainties, nonlinearities and unknown disturbances, model-based control strategies can reach their performance or stability limits without iterative controller design and performance evaluation, or system identification and parameter estimation. The non-identifier-based adaptive control presented is an alternative that neither identifies the system nor estimates its parameters but ensures stability. The adaptive controllers are easy to implement, compensate for disturbances and are inherently robust to parameter uncertainties and nonlinearities. For controller implementation only structural system knowledge (like relative degree, input-to-state stable zero dynamics and known sign of the high-frequency gain) is required. Moreover, the presented controllers guarantee reference tracking with prescribed asymptotic or transient accuracy, i.e. the tracking error eventually tends to or for all time evolves within an a priori specified region. The book presents the theory, modeling and application in a general but detailed and self-contained manner, making it easy to read and understand, particularly for newcomers to the topics covered

The book presents novel approaches for design and analysis of perturbation observers as well as an extension to robust motion control and robust state estimation. The book is written in a self-contained manner including experimental results in each chapter clearly validating the developed theories.

Book excerpt: Mechatronics has emerged as its own discipline over the past decade, yet no reference has lived up to the demands of being a working guide for designing and implementing the new generation of mechatronic systems. Uniting an international team of leading experts, Mechatronic Systems: Devices, Design, Control, Operation and Monitoring rises to the challenge of providing a practical, comprehensive, and detailed guide to the theory and application of modern mechatronics. Weaving the Multi-Domain Tapestry This book treats all components of the mechatronic system as a unified whole, combining mechanics, electronics, intelligent control, sensors, actuators, and communication networks through integrated design. Extensive cross-referencing lends this work a coherence not found in other books on mechatronics, which amount to little more than collections of papers. Real-World Guidance from the Experts Extensive examples and case studies take you effortlessly from theory to analysis, design, and application. Convenient snapshots in the form of tables, graphs, illustrations, and summaries give you immediate access to the information you need. Mechatronic Systems: Devices, Design, Control, Operation and Monitoring is a critical compendium of need-to-know information covering mechatronic devices, communication and control technologies, mechatronic design and optimization, and techniques for monitoring and diagnosis.
