These objects can also move on static or in motion backgrounds, with the same or different speed, in opposite direction, etc. Our Visual System can segregate figures from the background and thus extract information about objects in complex environments. Understanding how humans process motion is one of the most relevant and sophisticated problems in visual perception (see review of Nishida, 2011). The functional characteristics of the underlying mechanisms are not completely known, in particular, the role of the inhibitory mechanisms in motion perception. Therefore, the main goal of this Thesis is the psychophysical characterization of the functional properties of two inhibitory mechanisms involved in visual motion perception. It has traditionally been proposed that the antagonistic center-surround mechanisms are implicated in the segregation of the figure from the background (Lappin & Tadin, 2004;Tadin et al., 2019). The normal functioning of these mechanisms causes difficulties in perceiving large moving objects at high contrast (Derrington & Goddard, 1989). However, at low contrast, the larger the size of the object, the easier it is to detect its motion (Tadin etal., 2003). To explain these results, it is assumed that in these mechanisms, when the stimulus is large and has high contrast, the peripheral region suppresses or inhibits the activation of the center, and for low contrast, it facilitates the activation of the center. The same results have been found by analyzing the response of neurons with antagonistic center-surround receptive fields present in the medial temporal (MT) area of the visual cortex (Pack, Hunter & Born, 2005) and in the medial superior temporal (MST) area (Eifuku & Wurtz, 1998). The shape of these receptive fields is not fully characterized, although recent studies suggest an elongated spatial configuration in the direction of movement (Serrano-Pedraza, Hogg & Read, 2011), in agreement with physiological evidence (Xiao et al., 1997)...

Book excerpt: Two or more directions of motion cannot be discriminated from one direction over separations of direction greater than 16 and less than 60 deg at threshold contrast. The multiple directions produce a percept indistinguishable from a single direction. When the same stimuli are presented at 6 or more times threshold contrast, another kind of perception error occurs: the component directions are seen separately but their perceived directions repel one another. In a series of experiments, contrast, directional content, pattern content and velocity determined the conditions under which directions of motion summate or repel one another. Stimulus changes increasing inhibition enhance repulsion; changes decreasing inhibition enhance summation. A 3 stage, vector model can explain these errors in directional perception. Stage 1 of direction processing is excitation of directionally sensitive units. Such units may be portrayed in polar coordinates as vectors whose orientation is their optimal direction of sensitivity and whose length indicates the amount of activation. Stage 2 of motion perception is an inhibitory process limiting the distribution of excitation to units whose sensitivity is close to the direction of motion and suppressing activity in units sensitive to other directions. In stage 3 all remaining excitation is processed by a decision mechanism that determines the perceived direction of motion. Two decision processes, a peak detection and a vector summing process, are discussed.

Book excerpt: From August 24-29, 1980 the international "Symposium on the Study of Motion Perception; Recent Developments and Applications", sponsored by NATO and organized by the editors of this book, was held in Veldhoven, the Netherlands. The meeting was attended by about eighty scholars, including psychologists, neurologists, physicists and other scientists, from fourteen different countries. During the symposium some fifty research papers were presented and a series of tutorial review papers were read and discussed. The research presentations have been published in a special issue of the international journal of psychonomics "Acta Psychologica" (Vol. 48, 1981). The present book is a compilation of the tutorial papers. The tutorials were arranged around early versions of the chapters now appearing in this book. The long discussions at the Veldhoven tutorial sessions resulted in extensive revisions of the texts prior to this publication. Unfortunately this led to a delay in publication, but we feel that this was justified by a greater depth of understanding which, in our opinion, has significantly increased the quality of the book. As they now stand, the chapters cover most of the issues relevant to the study of motion perception. Also they clearly reflect the intensive exchange of knowledge that took place during the symposium. As such we think that this book can be used both as an advanced text for students and scientists alike and as a comprehensive reference source.
