This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of unconfined one-dimensional heating experiments in slab geometry was conducted with TNT, Comp. B, plastic-bonded HMX, TATB, DATB, and NQ. The explosive samples were heated on one surface at heating rates between 10 and 25/sup 0/C/min. The experimentaly determined times and temperatures to ignition were reproduced computationally, with one exception, by solving a one-dimensional heat-conduction equation containing a zero-order reaction energy source term and a time-dependent temperature boundary condition. The one exception was plastic-bonded NQ. Unconfined plastic-bonded NQ did not ignite under the experimental conditions used. The heat-transfer mechanism in molten TNT, as expected, was convective; and for molten Comp. B, conductive. A reactive heat-transfer program, EXPLO, was written that is capable of solving the convective transfer mode and accepting mixtures of explosives reacting with first-order kinetics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The risk of explosion is inseparable from industrial activity, as we are often reminded by the news. In order to avoid an explosion, it is necessary to understand the phenomena surrounding it, and take the necessary preventive measures to protect society if it comes to the worst-case scenario. This book will detail these phenomena. The Mechanisms of Explosions presents theoretical aspects from a physicochemical point of view and proposes various methods adapted to each type of explosion, including ATEX explosions. The author shares his knowledge of the mechanisms of explosions, acquired during numerous investigations. These 27 case studies – detailing circumstances, mechanisms and the nature and intensity of explosive effects – were selected to cover all of the possible physical or chemical phenomena, substances and mechanisms, without limiting themselves to the most common situations. This book, packed full of information, is designed to benefit those who analyze and investigate explosions, particularly insurance and judicial experts, prevention engineers, security managers and trainers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains a review of large scale propagating thermal explosions and small scale single drop explosions. The review of large scale propagating thermal explosions identifies potential thermal explosive systems, as well as the experimental conditions and geometrical configurations, conducive to the establishment of thermal detonations. The review of small scale single drop explosions identifies experimental data relevant to the design of detonating systems of thermal explosives. In addition, the effect of various thermodynamic parameters on the strength of both spontaneous and triggered single drop explosions is predicted qualitatively based on two promising fragmentation mechanisms; a new vapour/gas melt supersaturation mechanism and the water entrapment mechanism. It is shown that the vapour destabilization and nucleation phenomena which constitute the heart of the two fragmentation mechanisms govern single drop thermal explosions. The experimental data, however, is neither conclusive nor sufficient for the development of a predictive model. For some molten metal water systems (Al/water), the data was found to be incomplete and in the case of Fe-Al2O3/water, a system of particular interest, there is no available data. Keywords: Canada; Vapor explosion phenomena.

Book excerpt: The value of the critical temperature (Tc), below which the thermal explosion of a chemical cannot occur, is indispensable to prevent such a chemical from exploding. In order to determine the Tc it has so far been necessary to measure the value in explosion experiments. Because of the inherent hazards, only few Tc values are available at present. Critical Temperatures for the Thermal Explosion of Chemicals introduces new and simple procedures to calculate the Tc. As a result Tc can be calculated for a range of chemicals, many of which are listed in this new volume. The calculated values of Tc are shown to be in agreement with experimentally determined values. The data and methods presented in Critical Temperatures for the Thermal Explosion of Chemicals will be of use to research laboratories as well as in the chemical industry. - Introduces new and simple procedures for calculating critical temperatures - Lists the T(c) values of chemicals in tables - Explains mathematical expressions in clear simple terms

Book excerpt: The third edition of a classic text originally by Frost and Pearson, that describes the fundamental principles and established practices that apply to the study and the rates and mechanisms of homogeneous chemical reactions in the gas phase and in solution. Incorporates new advances made during the past 20 years in the study of individual molecular collisions by molecular-beam, laser applications to experimental kinetics, theoretical treatments of reaction rates and our understanding of the principles that govern rates of reaction in solution. Presents numerous examples of the deduction of mechanism from experiment, including intimate details such as stereochemistry and the dependence of reaction pathway on the exact energy states of reacting particles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical processes in many fields of science and technology, including combustion, atmospheric chemistry, environmental modelling, process engineering, and systems biology, can be described by detailed reaction mechanisms consisting of numerous reaction steps. This book describes methods for the analysis of reaction mechanisms that are applicable in all these fields. Topics addressed include: how sensitivity and uncertainty analyses allow the calculation of the overall uncertainty of simulation results and the identification of the most important input parameters, the ways in which mechanisms can be reduced without losing important kinetic and dynamic detail, and the application of reduced models for more accurate engineering optimizations. This monograph is invaluable for researchers and engineers dealing with detailed reaction mechanisms, but is also useful for graduate students of related courses in chemistry, mechanical engineering, energy and environmental science and biology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occasionally, our well-controlled cookoff experiments with Comp-B give anomalous results when venting conditions are changed. For example, a vented experiment may take longer to ignite than a sealed experiment. In the current work, we show the effect of venting on thermal ignition of Comp-B. We use Sandia's Instrumented Thermal Ignition (SITI) experiment with various headspace volumes in both vented and sealed geometries to study ignition of Comp-B. In some of these experiments, we have used a boroscope to observe Comp-B as it melts and reacts. We propose that the mechanism for ignition involves TNT melting, dissolution of RDX, and complex bubbly liquid flow. High pressure inhibits bubble formation and flow is significantly reduced. At low pressure, a vigorous dispersed bubble flow was observed.
