Book excerpt: Reliability-based design simulations often use the traditional, crude Monte Carlo method as a sampling procedure for predicting failure. The combination of designing for very small failure probabilities and (~10−8 - 10−6) and using computational expensive finite element models, makes traditional Monte Carlo very costly. The separable Monte Carlo method, which is an extension of conditional expectation, takes advantage of statistical independence of the limit state random variables of the response and capacity for improved accuracy in reliability calculations. The separation of response and capacity sampling enables flexible sample sizes, permitting low samples of the more expensive component (usually the response). In turn, this motivates the beneficial reallocation of uncertainty by reformulating the limit state. The variance estimator was derived for separable Monte Carlo and three example problems were used to compare the Monte Carlo methods.

Download or read book Uncertainty Quantification in Laminated Composites written by Sudip Dey and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, uncertainty quantification in composite materials and structures has gained a lot of attention from the research community as a result of industrial requirements. This book presents computationally efficient uncertainty quantification schemes following meta-model-based approaches for stochasticity in material and geometric parameters of laminated composite structures. Several metamodels have been studied and comparative results have been presented for different static and dynamic responses. Results for sensitivity analyses are provided for a comprehensive coverage of the relative importance of different material and geometric parameters in the global structural responses.

Book Synopsis Reliability and Safety Engineering by : Ajit Kumar Verma
Download or read book Reliability and Safety Engineering written by Ajit Kumar Verma and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-28 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reliability and safety are core issues that must be addressed throughout the life cycle of engineering systems. Reliability and Safety Engineering presents an overview of the basic concepts, together with simple and practical illustrations. The authors present reliability terminology in various engineering fields, viz., electronics engineering, software engineering, mechanical engineering, structural engineering and power systems engineering. The book describes the latest applications in the area of probabilistic safety assessment, such as technical specification optimization, risk monitoring and risk informed in-service inspection. Reliability and safety studies must, inevitably, deal with uncertainty, so the book includes uncertainty propagation methods: Monte Carlo simulation, fuzzy arithmetic, Dempster-Shafer theory and probability bounds. Reliability and Safety Engineering also highlights advances in system reliability and safety assessment including dynamic system modeling and uncertainty management. Case studies from typical nuclear power plants as well as from structural, software and electronic systems are also discussed. Reliability and Safety Engineering combines discussions of the existing literature on basic concepts and applications with state-of-the-art methods used in reliability and risk assessment of engineering systems. It is designed to assist practicing engineers, students and researchers in the areas of reliability engineering and risk analysis.
Book Synopsis Experimental Investigation, Stochastic Modelling and Reliability Analysis of Fatigue Behavior of Tapered Composite Laminates by : Xuan Ning Guo
Download or read book Experimental Investigation, Stochastic Modelling and Reliability Analysis of Fatigue Behavior of Tapered Composite Laminates written by Xuan Ning Guo and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present thesis contains the results of testing, stochastic process modeling and reliability analysis of symmetric tapered laminates with pre-set delaminations. Two laminate configurations, called lay-up A and lay-up B are considered. Lay-up A is a [0/±45/0/(±45) 3 /±45/0 7] s laminate that is reduced to a [0/±45/0/±45/0 7] s laminate and lay-up B is a [0 7 /±45/0/(±45) 3 /±45/0] s laminate that is reduced to a [0 7 /±45/0/±45/0] s laminate. Two locations of pre-set delaminations, at the center of the core layer and in between belt and core layers in the thin side of lay-up A tapered laminate, are considered. Two loading conditions, (a) cyclic tension-compression loading and (b) cyclic tension-compression loading with 85% over tension load, are applied for the fatigue tests in the present thesis. A stochastic approach to model the fatigue damage development based on the test data which has been developed and presented in an existing work is used in the present thesis. The Markov Chain is used to represent the fatigue damage accumulation in this approach, and the differences between the true probability distribution and the unconditional probability distribution (or predicted unconditional probability distribution) of the fatigue response parameter are determined by using different methodologies, that are, the Maximum Entropy Method (MEM) and, Gaussian (single and bivariate) probability distribution and joint probability density function. The test data on the fatigue response parameter are analyzed based on the reliability function, hazard rate and failure density function.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) has witnessed massive developments in response to the promise of achieving risk mitigation through scientific prediction. It has led to the integration of ideas from mathematics, statistics and engineering being used to lend credence to predictive assessments of risk but also to design actions (by engineers, scientists and investors) that are consistent with risk aversion. The objective of this Handbook is to facilitate the dissemination of the forefront of UQ ideas to their audiences. We recognize that these audiences are varied, with interests ranging from theory to application, and from research to development and even execution.
Book Synopsis Structural Health Monitoring For Advanced Composite Structures by : M H Ferri Aliabadi
Download or read book Structural Health Monitoring For Advanced Composite Structures written by M H Ferri Aliabadi and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a relatively new and alternative way of non-destructive inspection (NDI). It is the process of implementing a damage detection and characterization strategy for composite structures. The basis of SHM is the application of permanent fixed sensors on a structure, combined with minimum manual intervention to monitor its structural integrity. These sensors detect changes to the material and/or geometric properties of a structural system, including changes to the boundary conditions and system connectivity, which adversely affect the system's performance. This book's primary focus is on the diagnostics element of SHM, namely damage detection in composite structures. The techniques covered include the use of Piezoelectric transducers for active and passive Ultrasonics guided waves and electromechanical impedance measurements, and fiber optic sensors for strain sensing. It also includes numerical modeling of wave propagation in composite structures. Contributed chapters written by leading researchers in the field describe each of these techniques, making it a key text for researchers and NDI practitioners as well as postgraduate students in a number of specialties including materials, aerospace, mechanical and computational engineering.
