Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measuring the Skin presents all techniques devoted to non-invasive normal or diseased skin measurement. As opposed other books, this text embraces old and new validated techniques for all skin suborgans and functions. The book is ideal as a small encyclopedia since it provides the answer to any question concerning skin measurement. Each technique is discussed to help select the most appropriate one for each special case. Another novel feature is that the book bases the skin investigation on the physiology and anatomy. Each chapter is preceded by a compendium of current knowledge on the structure or function dealt with. The book may also be used as a research tool. It contains a novel, and presently unique list of more than 400 physical and biological skin constants, which are all referenced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first edition of this book was published in 2004, to much acclaim, the pace of innovation in the field of skin metrology has increased and various new technologies have become available. This new, revised edition reflects these advances by presenting the current theory and practice of noninvasive investigation and measurement of the skin and its appendices in health and disease. The first, extensive part of this authoritative work is devoted to the physiology and metrology of the various structural components of the skin. Skin functions and their measurement are then discussed in detail, with sections on mechanical protection, photoprotection, barrier function, immune function, thermoregulation, and sensory function. In addition, careful consideration is given to skin disease rating and skin maps, and a unique list of physical and biological constants and units is provided. Not only is this new edition the first comprehensive, practical handbook in this domain – it will also serve as a manual of skin physiology and collates anatomical, functional, and physical quantitative data that would otherwise be arduous to retrieve because of their dispersal throughout the literature. It will prove a valuable resource for dermatologists, cosmetologists, bioengineers, physiologists, pharmacists, and all others who deal with the skin in their work.

It includes a clear definition of terminology and a discussion of the various methods for measuring body composition. The authored papers represent a state-of-the-art review of this controversial field and address questions such as: What is a better measure of body compositionâ€"body fat or lean body mass? Does being overweight for one's height really affect performance? The book also addresses the issue of physical appearance as it relates to body fatness and performance. It includes an in-depth discussion of many of the topics of interest to those involved in sports medicine and exercise physiology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a skin-friction balance that is presently being used to measure shear stresses acting on the wall of an ablative duct. Tests have been conducted in the 3 Megawatt Arc Tunnel with a Mach number of 3, a stagnation enthalpy of 3000 BTU/lb, and a stagnation pressure of 20 atmospheres. The balance is a direct deflection measuring device in that balance arm rotation is measured with a linear variable differential transformer as the balance arm deflects due to shear loads acting on the end of the balance arm. This book was released on 2007-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: here exists a need for the creation of an objective system for measuring facial attractiveness and along with it a detailed mathematical analysis and understanding of facial sexual dimorphism. Both the areas of ophthalmic and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and the areas of facial attractiveness and recognition research in psychology would greatly benefit from achieving these goals. The objective of this work has been to: develop and test a system for measuring facial attractiveness in an objective manner; and analyze orbital and facial sexual dimorphism. A facial overlay system or mask variously called the phi, archetypal, golden, or golden ratio mask has been claimed to be capable of being adapted to create an objective system for measuring facial attractiveness. The central hypothesis of the thesis is that the phi mask can be used to create an objective measurement system for facial attractiveness. Over a period of seven years, we have created a standardized high resolution photographic facial database of 18-30 year old male and female adults, as well as database of linked facial anthropometric and photogrammetric measurement data. We have also designed a system using the phi mask that attempts to measure facial attractiveness objectively, and tested it against our facial database. Finally, we have made a detailed analysis of the measurement data and previous literature with respect to precisely defining sexual dimorphism around the eyes and face. Results support our central hypothesis in that the phi mask in its current form does yield a measure for objective attractiveness that correlates to the current "gold standard" measure of attractiveness - 'truth of consensus'. However, while the mask is capable of explaining a major portion of the variance in facial attractiveness, it is not the final complete answer. Strengths, weaknesses and limitations of the approach and the model used are discussed, and ideas and directions for further research to develop a more accurate system are suggested. The analysis of the orbits and the face for sexual dimorphism yielded a great deal of new data and have lead to an understanding of sexual differences that have practical implications for both surgery and further facial research. Applications of the research include: Preoperative aids for planning plastic and reconstructive surgery, cosmetic surgery, and sex-altering surgery; standards for analyzing the eyes for academic study; standards for quantifying the features of the eyes for use in an identification system; aid in application of cosmetics; aid in understanding the psychological impact of eyes on the judgment of attractiveness; creation of a standardized database of digital high-resolution facial photographs and linked anthropometric and demographic database to be made available to the world community of facial researchers; use of the databases by researchers for face recognition research, facial attractiveness research etc.

Book excerpt: Now updated with new measurement methods and new examples, How to Measure Anything shows managers how to inform themselves in order to make less risky, more profitable business decisions This insightful and eloquent book will show you how to measure those things in your own business, government agency or other organization that, until now, you may have considered "immeasurable," including customer satisfaction, organizational flexibility, technology risk, and technology ROI. Adds new measurement methods, showing how they can be applied to a variety of areas such as risk management and customer satisfaction Simplifies overall content while still making the more technical applications available to those readers who want to dig deeper Continues to boldly assert that any perception of "immeasurability" is based on certain popular misconceptions about measurement and measurement methods Shows the common reasoning for calling something immeasurable, and sets out to correct those ideas Offers practical methods for measuring a variety of "intangibles" Provides an online database (www.howtomeasureanything.com) of downloadable, practical examples worked out in detailed spreadsheets Written by recognized expert Douglas Hubbard—creator of Applied Information Economics—How to Measure Anything, Third Edition illustrates how the author has used his approach across various industries and how any problem, no matter how difficult, ill defined, or uncertain can lend itself to measurement using proven methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of a skin-friction balance to be used in a wind tunnel with heat-transfer conditions is described. The balance is a null-type device with a floating head element whose temperature can be maintained between 100K and 345K. This is accomplished with a cooled or heated jacket that is placed in direct contact with the friction element. At the desired element temperature the jacket is separated from the element and the shear-force data is taken. The balance was used in a Mach 5 supersonic flow with moderate heat-transfer rates. Shear forces ranging from 0.05 gm/sq cm to 1 gm/sq cm have been measured and higher ranges can be obtained by simply changing a coil spring. (Author).
