Book excerpt: Scientist/engineer productivity in a selected Air Force R and D laboratory was measured with the number of eight different types of output as reported by 135 scientists/engineers. A weighting scheme was developed from the results of a questionnaire administered to 53 first level supervisors in the laboratory. The correlation between the raw sum of the eight output types and the weighted sum was, r=.985. 23 predictor variables were compared to the reported output and seven were shown to be consistently associated with the reported productivity measures. Education level, frequency of attendance at professional society meetings, communication in and outside a scientist/engineer's section, participation in setting work goals and perceived rewards for quantity of output were positively associated with productivity. Length of time under the same supervisor was negatively associated with productivity. Canonical correlation analysis provided support for the existence of broad based types of output. (Author).
