Although some would argue that raw test scores are, in and of themselves, sufficient to distinguish between good and not-so-good schools, the economic theory of the production of education suggests an alternative approach. According to this view, although test scores provide a measure of school output, assessing school efficiency requires the understanding of the education production function, which captures the process by which the inputs to schooling are translated into outputs.
