This book was released on 2006-05-17 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The diploma thesis concentrates on regional headquarters and the effect they have on a host country's labor market and the skill level of its labor force. The first part of the thesis deals with the available literature giving an overview of the evolution of the topic and the most prominent issues and countries researched regarding regional headquarters. Moreover, definitions of transnational corporations, regional headquarters and the region of interest here are given in order to determine the scope of this thesis. The second part is empirical in nature. Based on the results of the literature review, a quantitative survey was conducted in order to examine the current situation of Austrian regional headquarters. Therefore, a questionnare was sent to all regional headquarters located in Austria. Furthermore, qualitative research appears in the form of two case studies. At the end of the thesis the results are summarized and recommendations are given for policy makers. The key results of the work are: RHQs actually have a positive effect on the domestic labor market, that is on the employment rate as well as on the level of skill. Structure of the Diploma Thesis: Each chapter is opened by a general introduction and closed by a sub-section which includes a summary and further research implications. The reader is introduced to the topic at hand by a literature review in chapter 3. This section contains two main parts: the analysis of studies and articles published in academic journals; and the description of books and other types of publication. All authors quoted in the course of my work are already included in the review which implies that it provides the foundation of the upcoming chapters. Chapter 4 builds the basis for the topic at hand. It defines the object of investigation, namely RHQs by using definitions provided by pervious authors. Of course, it takes a closer look at transnational companies which are the superior organization. Finally, sub-section 4.4. determines the scope of the region I chose to examine. Section 5 identifies the most important skills RHQs demand from potential employees. In order to be able to do that, I first took a look at the different responsibilities an Austrian RHQ may assume. For this purpose, sub-section 5.2. deals with the tasks a RHQ undertakes in order to fulfill HQ's requirements and with the services a RHQ provides for its subsidiaries. Chapters 6 and 7 present the empirical [...]

This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaim for the first edition: Even those who dislike the word globalisation cannot avoid using it. This remarkable book clarifies the concept of globalisation, and the ways in which it should be used. It is an invaluable guide to the economic and social processes of the 21st century. Daniele Archibugi, Italian National Research Council, Italy Admirably edited. With a wealth of applied detail, the contributors visit all the interesting questions in international political economy. Ciaran Driver, University of London, UK This Handbook brings together a stunning range of writing on a subject which has tended to be wrapped in mystery and controversy. From the opening chapters that debate the newness of globalisation to the chapters that analyse the hegemony of neo-liberalism this book weaves together the most up to date and challenging academic work. . . Vishnu Padayachee, University of Natal, Durban, South Africa Globalisation is a ubiquitous buzzword. But what does it really mean and what are its implications for human well-being? The Handbook of Globalisation pulls together current work from a sterling cast of innovative thinkers on these questions. It is no surprise that one finds penetrating insights and innovative policy approaches on nearly every page. Robert Pollin, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, US Globalisation is an issue that has been high on the research agenda for several years, spawning a vast and at times unwieldy literature. A concept often ill-defined, it has generated a plethora of unresolved and fiercely contested questions, the nature of which depends on which side of the ideological divide one stands. The 2008 global credit crunch, which in 2009 created the first global recession since the 1930s, demonstrated that the capitalism unleashed model of globalisation which had been promoted from the 1980s onwards was both damaging and unsustainable. With contributions from the leading commentators in the field and an over-arching introduction from the editor, the concerns of this updated and revised handbook are two-fold. Firstly, to redefine the concept of globalisation and dispel the haze that surrounds it through a systematic and thorough examination of the debate. Secondly, to advance the frontiers of current critical thinking on the role and impact of globalisation, on the winners and losers in the process, and on the implications for society, the economy and governance. Offering a genuinely inter-disciplinary perspective, this Handbook represents the definitive guide to what is an all-pervasive issue. It should be on the bookshelves of all postgraduate and advanced undergraduate students in economics, business, international studies and related fields, as well as scholars and policymakers with an interest in the global economy and in the functioning of an increasingly globalised world.

Book excerpt: New computer and communications technologies have acted as the catalyst for a revolution in the way goods are produced and services delivered, leading to profound changes in the way work is organized and the way jobs are designed. This important book examines the nature, setting and impact of new technologies on work, organization and management. Conventional debates about new technology often invoke optimistic visions of enhanced democracy, rising skills and economic abundance; others predict darker scenarios such as the destruction of jobs through labour-eliminating devices. This book proposes an alternative perspective, arguing that technology can be powerful, but in and of itself has no independent causal powers. It considers the impact of new technologies on manufacturing, clerical, administrative and call centre employment, in both managerial and professional arenas, and introduces the growing phenomena of telework. The book also assesses the important political and economic forces that restrict or facilitate the flow of new technologies on national and global levels. New Technology @ Work is an illuminating and thought-provoking text that will prove invaluable to all serious students of business, management and technology.
