Book excerpt: This paper summarizes a variety of recent results on heavy quark production and decay. Considerable progress has been made by CDF and D0 in measuring top quark production and decay properties. The top quark mass been measured with an uncertainty that is less than 3%, a relative precision that is better than has been achieved for other quarks. Measurements of the top production and decay properties are consistent with the Standard Model predictions, but are generally limited in precision by the small number of top quark events in the present data samples. ALEPH and CLEO have measured the branching ratio for the flavor changing neutral current decay b→s[gamma] and find good agreement with the standard model. Measurements of B-quark production cross sections in p{anti p} collisions by CDF and D0 and in ep collisions by H1 continue to show discrepancies between theory and experiment. CDF and DELPHI have measured the b-quark fragmentation fractions with better accuracy than previous measurements. Finally, measurements of charmonium production by D0, E771, and L3 are consistent with predictions of the color octet model.

Book Synopsis Heavy Quark Production at SLC and LEP. by :
Download or read book Heavy Quark Production at SLC and LEP. written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments at SLC and LEP have made preliminary measurements of the relative partial widths of the c and b quarks. Using D* tagging, DELPHI has found R{sub c}{bar c}{triple bond}/[Gamma]{sub c}{bar c}/[Gamma]{sub hadr.} = 0.162 {plus minus} 0.032 {plus minus} 0.031, in good agreement with the Standard Model value of 0.171. ALEPH has used semileptonic decays of charm to obtain 0.148 {plus minus} 0.044 {sub -0.038}{sup +0.045}. Three experiments have used semileptonic [Beta] decays to measurement R{sub b}{bar b}: R{sub b}{bar b} = 0.23 {plus minus} 0.10 (Mark II), 0.218 {plus minus} 0.010 {plus minus} 0.021 (L3), and 0.220 {plus minus} 0.016 {plus minus} 0.024 (ALEPH). All agree well with the expected value of 0.217. The uncertainty in branching ratios of c and b hadrons is the largest systematic error in all of the results. Future LEP measurements of the branching ratios may reduce the errors. R{sub b}{bar b} will also be measured with different, and possibly lower, systematic errors by Mark II using impact parameter tagging.

Book Synopsis Measurement of Heavy Quark Cross-sections at CDF. by :
Download or read book Measurement of Heavy Quark Cross-sections at CDF. written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The measurement of heavy quark cross-sections provides important tests of the QCD theory. This paper reviews recent measurements of single b-quark and correlated b-quark cross-sections at CDF. Two new measurements of the single b-quark production at CDF agree with the first result from CDF Run II. This clarifies the experimental situation and confirms the recent agreement of theoretical prediction with data. A new measurement of the correlated b{bar b} cross-section with dimuon events at CDF is presented. It agrees with theory and it does not confirm the anomalously large b{bar b} cross-section seen in Run I by CDF and D0 in dimuon events.

Book Synopsis Systematics of Heavy Quark Production at RHIC. by :
Download or read book Systematics of Heavy Quark Production at RHIC. written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We discuss a program for systematic studies of heavy quark production in pp, pA and AA interactions. The Q[ovr Q] production cross sections themselves cannot be accurately predicted to better than 50% at RHIC. For studies of deviations in Q[ovr Q] production such as those by nuclear shadowing and heavy quark energy loss, the pp cross-section thus needs to be measured. We then show that the ratio of pA to pp dilepton mass distributions can provide a measurement of the nuclear gluon distribution. With total rates and nuclear shadowing under control it is easier to study energy loss and to use c[ovr c] as a normalization of J/[Psi] production.

Book Synopsis Heavy-flavor Production Overview by : Jeffrey A. Appel

Book excerpt: This talk serves as an introduction to the Heavy-Flavor session of the XXXIII International Symposium on Multiparticle Dynamics. A major focus of this session is on the production of heavy quarks. The talks which follow review the latest results on heavy quark production in strong, electromagnetic, and weak interactions, as well as some of the physics of the heavy quarks themselves. This talk emphasizes what we can learn from the production measurements, both about underlying QCD theory and the partonic nature of the hadrons which we see in the laboratory.
Book Synopsis Heavy Quark Production and Spectroscopy by :
Download or read book Heavy Quark Production and Spectroscopy written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review covers many new experimental results on heavy flavor production and spectroscopy. It also shows some of the increasingly improved theoretical understanding of results in light of basic perturbative QCD and heavy quark symmetry. At the same time, there are some remaining discrepancies among experiments as well as significant missing information on some of the anticipated lowest lying heavy quark states. Most interesting, perhaps, are some clearly measured production effects awaiting full explanation.

Book excerpt: Heavy quark production cross-sections, correlations and polarizations have been measured at the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) using 118 pb[sup -1] of data collected from the 1992 to 1995 Run I of the Fermilab Tevatron. There is still disagreement between theoretical predictions of bottom and charm hadro-production cross-sections and the Run I results. The observed transverse momentum spectrum of the prompt J/[psi] production polarization is still not understood. Run II of the Tevatron began in July of 2001 and the CDF Run II detector[11] has collected 70 pb[sup -1] of physics quality data since January 2002. Large statistics of onia states have been collected. Exclusive B meson decay modes have been reconstructed and the SVT level 2 displaced track trigger has produced large samples of D mesons. The prompt charm and b[yields] cX fractions in both charmonium and D meson samples have been measured. Run II is now poised to greatly enhance the knowledge of heavy quark production dynamics well beyond the reach of the Run I detector.
