Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Educational Hygiene This volume is an attempt to bring together in organized form the latest information and advice of leading specialists in all the large phases of the subject. The hygiene of chil dren from the standpoint of the school in its relationship to the home and community, from the pre - school period up to the college, is sketched in such detail as is possible in so comprehensive a volume. There has been a constant temp tation to add chapters on many new phases of the school health movement, but the editor has tried to limit himself to certain minimum essentials, and to give references to the voluminous literature which treats at length the many topics discussed here only briefly. Each chapter and parts of many chapters easily furnish topics for much-needed books, some of which have already been provided by contributors to the volume. Effort has been made to lead the reader on from these condensed statements to the monographic literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Hygiene IT is the purpose of this book to set forth in a simple and untechnical way some of'the hygienic requirements of school life, and to suggest, whenever it seems necessary, how these requirements may be put into practice. No attempt has been made to treat any phase of the subject exhaustively. The purpose has been to select the most important topics, and to deal with them in a manner as simple as is consistent with the truth. It has not been written for the specialist in school hygiene, but for busy teachers, and the author hopes that it will do some small service in convincing them of the great importance of making school life wholesome and healthful, and of instructing the children, directly and indirectly, in matters relating to hygienic living in school and at home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Laws of Health, and School Hygiene: A Hand-Book on School Hygiene Some may object that the sections dealing with anatomy and physiology are too short. This abbrevia tion is intentional. There are already excellent small manuals dealing with physiology suitable for the teacher's needs, and what is wanted is a book treating of the application of physiological knowledge to the hygiene of school life. The tendency in lectures on the laws of health is to overburden them with purely anatomical and physiological details, and so obscure their real pur pose and lessen their value. In the original preparation of my lectures, I gained many useful hints from the excellent articles on the teaching of hygiene to teachers, which appeared in the British Medical Journal during 1904 - 1905. Use has been made of them once more in preparing this manual. Most of the illustrations have been furnished by my publishers. For No. 16 I am indebted to Messrs. E. 85 S. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of School Hygiene I wish for The American Journal of School Hygiene a long life of usefulness in its very important field. There is need for such a journal, first to assist in spreading the gospel of good health for children through proper care both at home and in school and through scientific sanitation of school buildings and grounds. Second, to give information in regard to the means of conserving and promoting the health of children, and last and by no means least, to serve as a means of communication between teachers, school boards and superintendents, health inspectors and school physicians and nurses. The rapidly increasing interest in the health of children in school and the recognition of the responsibility of the schools in respect to this subject show the practical trend of modern educational theory and practice. In modern thought and practice education lays hold more and more firmly on life and tries to add to its fullness more effectually. Mere learning and other products of the school room come too high if gained at the expense of physical health and vitality. However well informed, trained and skilled they may be, a vital mistake has been made in the education of those children who come to manhood or womanhood without the health and strength and hardihood necessary to enable them to do the work of men or to bear the burdens of women, without which they are unable to make their knowledge, skill and good will effective for the happiness of themselves and their fellows. There is much economic loss to the State and society when children are reared and educated at great expense, but through lack of necessary knowledge and care of their health go to an early grave or live unprofitable lives as invalids. Therefore the establishment of health and right health habits must be considered among the most important elements in public education, and a knowledge of the laws of health among the most important of all forms of knowledge to be given by the schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Measurements The sole purpose of standardized measurements is to refine these judgments, to make them more accurate and objective, to express them in terms of known units of a definable character, so that we may be able to say, for example, that a pupil can read three words per second of a certain passage and to report so and so much of it, that he knows the English meaning of 2000 Latin words and can translate without error sentences of specified difficulty. If there are any products or by-products of education which are too subtle to be distinguished or judged as existing in greater or less amounts, or as having higher or lower quality, we may be suspicious of their actual existence. Any quality or ability of human nature that is detectable is also measurable. It remains only to discover more and more accurate means of measurement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crowley's Hygiene of School Life The centre of social responsibility has Shifted from the adult to the child. Progress viewed from the point of View of the former has been halting and in many directions disappointing: the change of the focus to the child has made a vast - an almost incalculable - change in the outlook. Seeming impossibilities find a solution there, Optimism replaces pessimism; that the child is father to the man remains no longer a mere empty sentiment, but has become a fact in the recognition of which must be found the groundwork of future social action. This change of viewpoint, it becomes evident, is a very radical one. Methods of dealing with children will vary greatly according to the standpoint from which the child is viewed, whether, as has been largely the case in the past, chiefly from the standpoint of the adult, or Whether attention is primarily given to its own laws of physical and mental development. The View that each child must be considered as an indivisible whole, Whose physical, mental, and moral development can never be considered apart, the unfolding of whose life therefore must be in harmony with the teaching of physiology and the laws of brain development, forms the theoretical, the scientific call, for medical inspection. This, however, has not been, directly at any rate, the motive force in bringing about medical inspection. The motive force has been rather the failure, seen on all hands, of the methods of treatment of the child on the former lines, and into the history of the call from this point of View we must enter rather more fully. Before, however, recalling the steps taken in our own country, it will be useful to follow, though in only very brief outline, the history of the movement in continental and other countries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Congress of the American School Hygiene Association, Vol. 3 I cannot let this occasion pass without drawing attention to what I believe to be a fundamental need, not only In school hygiene but In all that proudly marches under the name Of science. I refer to the need for definite measurements of results already Obtained, measurements without which neither medicine nor education can ever become scientific. I do not need to remind you that it was through the use Of measurements that alchemy became Chemistry, astrology became astronomy, physics grew out Of mystery. The great need Of the school hygiene course to-day, as well as the greatest need Of education itself, is not authority nor philosophy; it is a need for definite methods of measuring the effects Of present systems and practices. I am sure that the occasion has now so far gone by that I may speak, without venturing beyond the limits Of personal courtesy, Of a conversation which took place between Dr. William H. Max well and myself at the time I became director Of physical training in the New York Public Schools - a conversation which he may have forgotten. I said. For this reason it is particularly appropriate that the Council's Committee on Measurement and Guidance should have planned the general character and manner of executing the publication of the present book on educational measurement. They are not wholly so, however; and it is a teacher's duty to discourage working in improper hours.
