Book excerpt: We present the first measurement of the CP violating charge asymmetry in $B^\pm \to \mu^\pm \nu_\mu {D}^0$ decays using the full Run II integrated luminosity of 10.4 fb$^{-1}$ in proton-antiproton collisions collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We measure a difference in the yield of $B^-$ and $B^+$ mesons in these decays by fitting the reconstructed invariant mass distributions. This results in an asymmetry of $A^{\mu D^{0}} =\left[-0.03 \pm 0.27 \right]\%$, which is consistent with standard model predictions.

The data was collected at the Japanese B-meson factory KEKB with the Belle detector, one of the most successful large-scale experiments worldwide. CP violation is a subtle quantum effect that makes the world look different when simultaneously left and right and matter and antimatter are exchanged. This being a prerequisite for our own world to have developed from the big bang, there are only a few experimental indications of such effects, and their detection requires very intricate techniques. The discovery of CP violation in B meson decays garnered Kobayashi and Maskawa, who had predicted these findings as early as 1973, the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. This thesis describes in great detail what are by far the best measurements of branching ratios and CP violation parameters in two special reactions with two charm mesons in the final state. It presents an in-depth but accessible overview of the theory, phenomenology, experimental setup, data collection, Monte Carlo simulations, (blind) statistical data analysis, and systematic uncertainty studies.

Yields are extracted using a 2 minimising simultaneous binned fit where 490k D candidates are reconstructed. The measurements presented in this thesis was made possible due to sophisticated online and offline reconstruction software, precise tracking systems, and the first-order background asymmetry negating magnet polarity reversal of the DØ detector.

From these measured quantities they extract the angle [alpha]{sub eff} = 78.6{sup o} {+-} 7.3{sup o}.

B mesons are reconstructed from 16 exclusive final states. Particle identification is done using an algorithm based on Error Correcting Output Code with an exhaustive matrix. Background rejection and best candidate selection are done using two decision tree-based classifiers. We found A_cp = 1.73%+-1.93%+-1.02% and Delta A_X_sgamma = 4.97%+-3.90%+-1.45% where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic respectively. Based on the measured value of Delta A_X_sgamma, we determine a 90% confidence interval for Im C_8g/C_7gamma, where C_7gamma and C_8g are Wilson coefficients for New Physics amplitudes, at -1.64

We study events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state containing a charmonium meson and the other B meson is determined to be either a B[sup 0] or[bar B][sup 0] from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the Standard Model is proportional to sin2[beta], is derived from the decay-time distributions in such events. We measure sin2[beta]= 0.741[+-] 0.067 (stat)[+-] 0.033 (syst) and[lambda]= 0.948[+-] 0.051 (stat)[+-] 0.017 (syst). The magnitude of[lambda] is consistent with unity, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation of no direct CP violation in these modes.

We also analyze D meson decays into K+?− from a Cabibbo-favored {bar D}° decay or doubly suppressed D° decay ('ADS' analysis). We measure observables that are sensitive to the CKM angle?: the partial-rate charge asymmetries A{sub CP±}, the ratios R{sub CP±} of the B-decay branching fractions in CP± and non-CP decay, the ratio R{sub ADS} of the charge-averaged branching fractions, and the charge asymmetry A{sub ADS} of the ADS decays: A{sub CP+} = 0.09 ± 0.13 ± 0.06, A{sub CP-} = -0.23 ± 0.21 ± 0.07, R{sub CP+} = 2.17 ± 0.35 ± 0.09, R{sub CP-} = 1.03 ± 0.27 ± 0.13, R{sub ADS} = 0.066 ± 0.031 ± 0.010, and A{sub ADS} = -0.34 {+-} 0.43 {+-} 0.16, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Combining all the measurements and using a frequentist approach yields the magnitude of the ratio between the Cabibbo-suppressed and favored amplitudes, r{sub B} = 0.31 with a one (two) sigma confidence level interval of [0.24, 0.38] ([0.17, 0.43]). The value r{sub B} = 0 is excluded at the 3.3 sigma level. A similar analysis excludes values of? in the intervals [0, 7]{sup o}, [55, 111]{sup o}, and [175, 180]{sup o} ([85, 99]{sup o}) at the one (two) sigma confidence level.

Specifically, a unique CP-violating decay-plane asymmetry was measured along with the parameters of individual contributions to the decay invariant amplitude: (1) CP-conserving magnetic dipole direct emission form factor, (2) CP-conserving K{sup 0} charge radius transition amplitude and (3) an upper limit for the CP-violating electric dipole direct emission amplitude. The measurements were obtained from the data sample accumulated by KTeV experiment at Fermilab. KTeV had two major goals: the measurement of direct CP violation parameter Re({var_epsilon}{prime}/{var_epsilon}) and the study of rare kaon decays. The state of the art detector was constructed, commissioned, operated and maintained by an international collaboration of scientists from fourteen institutions. The K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} e{sup +}e{sup -} data was accumulated over the 1997 and 1999 running periods. During that time hundreds of billions K{sub L} decays took place in the KTeV fiducial decay region.
