UPSILON(1S) .-->. .gamma gamma gamma gamma.ll− (l = .mu. or e) are investigated using the Crystal Ball detector. The analysis is based on 193,000 UPSILON(2S) events produced at the DORIS II ee− storage ring from November 1982 to February 1984. We observe 44 events with a muon pair and 46 events with an electron pair in the final state. The signals in both channels are relatively background free. Assuming lepton universality, we average the results for the two channels and obtain the product branching ratio B(UPSILON(2S) .-->. .pi.°.pi.°UPSILON(1S)) x B/sub ll/(UPSILON(1S)) = (2.3 +- 0.3 +- 0.3) x 10−3 where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. Using the present world average value of B/sub ll/(UPSILON(1S)) = (2.9 +- 0.3)% we derive a branching ratio B(UPSILON(2S) .-->. .pi.°.pi.°UPSILON(1S)) = (8.0 +- 1.5)% where the statistical and systematic errors have been added in quadrature. This result is compared with previous results for the charged pion transitions UPSILON(2S) .-->. .pi.+.pi.−UPSILON(1S) and with the expectation from theory. We have also investigated the mass spectrum M/sub .pi.°.pi.°/ resulting from these decays and find a peaking toward high masses not accounted for the phase space alone. Fits to the .pi.°.pi.° mass spectrum are in quantitative agreement with previous results for the .pi.+.pi.− transitions. Angular distribution for the .pi.°.pi.° system and its decay products are presented in reference frames appropriate for analyzing the spin of the .pi.°.pi.° system, even if the initial UPSILON(1S) and the di-pion system are emitted in a relative S-wave. We find the decay distributions to be consistent with those expected for a spin zero di-pion system emitted in a relative S-wave with the UPSILON(1S).

Book excerpt: The Crystal Ball Detector at DORIS II was used to study radiative decays of the upsilon (2S) resonance with more than twice the previously available data. The inclusive photon spectrum of hadronic upsilon (2S) decays and the exclusive channel upsilon (2S) .-->. .gamma gamma. upsilon (1S) .-->. .gamma gamma. ll− were analyzed. In the inclusive spectrum three significant photon lines at energies of E.gamma.1 = (108.2 +- 0.7 +- 4) MeV, E.gamma.1 = (127.1 +- 0.8 +- 4) MeV and E.gamma.3 = (160.0 +- 2.4 +- 4) MeV with branching fractions of (6.0 +- 0.7 +- 0.9)%, (6.6 +- 0.8 +- 1.0)%, (2.6 +- 0.7 +- 0.8)% respectively were measured. The lines are consistent with being transitions from the upsilon (2S) to the 3P2, 3P1 and 3P0 states. In addition a line at E.gamma. approx. 427 MeV was observed which is interpreted as transitions from the 3P2 1 states to the upsilon (1S). 17 references.

Book excerpt: The radiative decay of the muon, positive-muon to position + neutrino + e-neutrino + mu'-antineutrino was measured using muons from the Columbia University Nevis Synchrocyclotron. The positron and gamma-ray decay products were observed at relative angles near 180 degrees, using scintillation counters and two 9 in. x 10 in. NaI crystals, which enabled simultaneous measurement of the positron and gamma energies. The pulses from the crystals were displayed on oscilloscopes and photographed, and the measured amplitudes of these pulses were calibrated using the positron spectrum of the nonradiative decay. The two-dimensional energy spectrum for positrons and gammas was obtained for about 900 events, after subtraction of background. This spectrum and the measured rate, obtained by normalizing to the nonradiative decay, were compared with theoretical predictions for the radiative decay. The results were in good agreement with the theory, within statistics, for the case of pure V-A coupling. (Author).

An upper limit of BR(UPSILON .-->. Unseen) 12% (90% C.L.), is obtained via this approach. The second process investigated involved the radiative decay of the Upsilon into non-interacting particles. 57 pb−1 of UPSILON(2S) data was available for this study. An upper limit on the branching ratio BR(UPSILON .--. .gamma. + Unseen) is measured for photon energies in the range 500 MeV E.gamma.

The spectrum measured from the momentum and angles of the decay positrons is parametrized using a set of four decay parameters. The purpose of the TWIST experiment is to measure these decay parameters to an unprecedented precision; an order of magnitude improvement in the uncertainties over measurements completed before the TWIST experiment. Measurements of the muon decay parameters constrain the values of a series of 19 weak coupling constants. In the standard model, V-A weak interaction, 18 of these constants are 0, while the remaining constant describes interactions between left handed particles, gV_LL= 1. The decay parameter? quantifies the behaviour of the spectrum with respect to momentum. According to the standard model the value of this parameter is 3/4. TWIST measured a value of? = 0.74991?0.00009(stat)?0.00028(sys). The measurement is limited by its systematic uncertainty, so a large focus of the experiment was on the determination and control of these uncertainties. The systematic uncertainties are derived from uncertainties in the detector construction and uncertainties in the biases generated by differences between the data and a matching Monte Carlo. Muon decay also limits the possibility of family symmetry breaking interactions. TWIST can be used to search for the possibility of muons decaying into a positron and a single unidentified neutral particle?+? e+X0 that does not otherwise interact with normal matter. The large momentum and angle acceptance of the TWIST spectrometer allows for searches of two body decays for masses of the X0 boson mX0? [0,80] MeV/c, with a variety of behaviours with respect to the angle of the positron track. Upper limits on massive and mass-less X0 decays are set with a 90% confidence level separately at parts per million for massive decays and parts in 10000 for mass-less decays.
